THREE-FACED SNAKES AND A POCKET FULL OF SAND

“OH?”

Fernando quirks his head at the sound of another would-be challenger. She lacks the same fervor of the past combatants but there’s a singsong pleasantness that undermines the grueling work that comes from back-to-back battles.

“I’m afraid I only have a few Pokemon left,” he says with a quick touch pass of each Pokeball on his belt.

A quick glance between her figure and the Pokemon she keeps with her tells him all he needs to know to make a judgmental assessment. He pools her into the casual trainer or simple tourist bucket before choosing the weaker of his two Pokemon.

“This’ll have to do.” He tosses a Pokeball and it deposits a small, camouflaged snake into the sand. It buries itself immediately, hiding away in a warm, sunbaked SAND VEIL. Only the rhythmic rattle of its tail and the occasional black dots that peeks out from the sand give away its position.

“But underestimate it and you’ll fall all the same.”
