Since her temporary living situation with kris flynn-edwards, the woman's recovery had improved exponentially. But she still encountered speed bumps around every other corner. Her eyesight was the slowest thing to recover, along with bits and pieces of her memory.[break][break]

Sometimes familiarity washed over her like a warm blanket, but sometimes it was painful like a knife to her stomach.[break][break]

And it was for that reason that she actively avoided lingering in places that brought her that twist of grief. It was the reason she leaned back against a park bench in the heart of Lilycove city, eyes closed behind a pair of dark sunglasses, just breathing in the smell of the flowers behind her. There is the soft sound of water splashing nearby from a fountain, the chatter of people passing her by. But something jolts her from the quiet of her blank thoughts. It came from the crunch of a boot against the pavement, a familiar smell, a familiar voice in the crowd. Anticipation crawls across her skin in a wash of goosebumps, and she sucks in her breath.[break][break]

"... Bill?"

He saw her an instant before she said his name. it left her lips like a bullet, sinking into the meat right above his heart. Just missing, as it did before.

"Yes Wolfe?" He answered, as if no time, distance, or lives had passed between then. As if a decade and change of cruelty hadn't carved off what could have been.

For a moment Bill flashed back to the night they'd met, and all he could see was her ruined face full of blood, retribution, and those lips, so thick and inviting. And then he was back in a thin strip of park, with a splashing fountain and the sun at his back.

He sat on the bench, sunglasses now down and this sliver of the past across from him. In the great mosaic of his past, there would always be a few panes that were a delicate, deadly purple. "It's been a while. How have you been?"

Her breath rattles through her chest, reminiscent of the way her rifle had trembled when the bullet had fired. He doesn't even need to respond for her to know that she's hit her mark. This time, she hadn't missed. But this time, she hadn't shot to kill.[break][break]

"Yes Wolfe?"[break][break]

So natural, so succinct, like there was no tension or malice or pain that had once been shared between them. They were, in this moment, two old friends. But was that what they were? Just old friends?[break][break]

Emma gazes up at Bill Anderson behind her blackened sunglasses, hardly able to see the outline of the man in front of her. But his presence is intense, all-consuming, and she finds herself caught between the urge to run or to stay. Old memories stir up like leaves in the wind, a mess of decay and dried-out thought.[break][break]

It feels like just yesterday she had pulled the trigger.[break][break]

"... Bill?"

Bill grinned, his smile wide like open arms, beckoning her inside. "Middle of the road? Well we can't have that." His teeth clicked as he bite off the last word .

"My God Wolfe," he said, eyes piercing right through her dark shades before carving down her form. She looked tired, run down, put through the wringer by life and worse for wear after so many years on Rocket's leash. "You look amazing."

The sun started to dip below the skyline, and Bill slid closer. "Why are you here?" He asked, less an accusation and more a veiled invitation. Why are you here and not somewhere softer and more muffled, entangled?

She can't see him smile, but she can feel it. His presence is something adjacent to disorienting. A ray of sunshine against pale skin, impossible to seek shelter from. She's sweating.[break][break]

The man fixes her with his gaze and she can't look away. He is smothering, eliciting a reaction from her that takes her right back to when she'd pulled the trigger. Even now, there is something about him that takes her breath away, that makes her twitch. [break][break]

"I've never liked being cooped up."[break][break]

Never liked the chains, the muzzle, the cage. [break][break]

There is no reason for her to glance away, but his gaze, searching, hungry, carnal- it makes her skin crawl. It's too familiar, too comfortable. Like a deer in headlights, a wolf eating the palm of the hunter's hand.[break][break]

Like a deer in headlights, a wolf eating the palm of the hunter's hand.

For Bill, there was no greater comfort than knowing that the person across from him had already failed to kill him. Ever since that night in the gardens, Bill had felt at ease around Wolfe. He knew where he stood. Above her.

He had defeated her once, wet hands on her face and red fingers pulling at her mouth, and he could do it again. He had only gotten stronger with age, and if she had surpassed him? Well, then she deserved some time on top.

"It was," Bill said, "and the night is looking better, now." His presence pulled at her. With the fading light the tourists and wanderers had left the park, returning to their lives. "Take off those shades, Wolfe. You won't need them in the dark."

Arceus, she can still taste the blood in her mouth. She can still feel the rage beneath her skin, the hatred, the fear. He had been her mission, her target. He had been the devil, another name to be erased.[break][break]

She was the judge, the jury, the executioner- but he had slipped through her fingers.[break][break]

Emma's fingers tighten against the smooth, painted wood bench. With the fading light, his shape comes into sharper focus- still a dark shadow, but easier to outline, easier to see. Nothing has changed, but everything has changed. [break][break]

Where he pulls she yet resists, but the attempt is reluctant. He orders her to remove her sunglasses, and her hand moves to do as she's told.[break][break]

She wore them to hide her scars. To hide the blank stare, to hide the pain she felt still in the back of her mind. The numbness, the burning, the everything in between. But when had she ever been ashamed of being alive? When had she started to hide behind a mask?[break][break]

Emma pulls the sunglasses from her face, revealing the discreet bandaging covering her left eye. It had suffered worse damage than the other. Concern that her eyesight may not return had been discussed in Rocket's medical bay.[break][break]

But she had never been one to trust words alone.[break][break]

"I hope you got a second opinion," Bill said, his silver tongue flicking against midday teeth. His smile was hard and direct, meant to be met with another mouth, or a neck.

The pale patch stood stark against Wolfe's skin. The sunglasses had hidden it entirely. "Good thing you only need one eye in your line of work." To the point. For now it was all business and catching up. Later it would be pleasure, and perhaps getting caught.

But Bill didn't get caught often, and Wolfe was a seasoned accomplice. She knew how to move a body; Whether it was hers or someone else's.
