Rare as it was for him to try out new pokémon in battle, Sam needed to get out of his comfort zone and into more battles. Because of this, he'd signed up for a few more battles.

For this one, he was trying out a new companion of his, a toxel. Now, usually he didn't send out baby pokémon to battle, but because of the nature of the tournament he wanted to try and get the toxel some experience in battle. After all, it needed a lot of care and attention in order to reach its full potential.

No better way to go about that than battle, he'd heard. Specifically from the breeder who he'd gotten the pokémon from as a gift.

Much to Sam's surprise, the toxel was so excited she was behaving. This toxel was well known for being a trouble maker and so far, she was so pleased to be entering battle, that she wasn't kicking up a fuss.

Because of that, Sam'd given her like four poffins already.

Walking into the center of the battle arena for the two, he looked across at his opponent and gave a polite smile of welcoming as he listened to the rules he'd memorized by now being spat from the referee's mouth.

As a child with somewhat of a long life ahead of her, Eris has close to no fear when it comes to treading the line of risks. Today is no exception to the rule, a goofy grin plastered on her face as she skips through the crowd of strangers and challengers alike with her faithful Luxray by her side.

Her pockets shift with an unnatural movement, a quiet trill muffled by the fabric of her jacket as she reaches in to retrieve the little culprit. Lo and behold, there sits a Meltan in her palms, somewhat disorientated but surely curious about its surroundings as its eye rapidly shifts from one end to another.

Standing right across the field is her next opponent, a man with what seems to be a rather excitable Toxel. Perhaps, she's new to the notion of combat! If that's the case then so is Mercury! That is, if it doesn't hold any memories from its time of being a mega-evolved, rampaging Melmetal in a large scrapyard... Well, regardless of whether it does or doesn't, this tournament is a sure-fire way for her to get some trust exercises and combat experience in!

"Let's try our best today, okay?" With a quiet hum, Eris lowers the Mercury to the ground, encouraging it to step into the arena for its first ever battle since its formation. And it obliges with a hearty chirp, waddling forth with its blobby body and offering its opponent the biggest wave it can possibly manage.

"Hiya, I'm Eris! And that's Mercury! Nice to meetcha!"

The battle was beginning and Sam found himself making eye contact with a rather ... young, opponent. Unfortunately for the girl, his toxel cares not that she is young or that the meltan might be new to battling. Instead, she's squaring her shoulders and already eager to get started.

Sam, on the other hand, frowns in disappointment. Because this toxel was exceptionally rude and he wasn't entirely sure she'd ever shape up to be anything but.

"A pleasure. I'm Sam Carter. Best of luck out there today."

Encouraging young trainers to do their best had been ingrained in his mind since he could remember. A habit, more than anything.

But so were most of his polite gestures. Habit, drilled into him by his mother.

Was he frowning at his Toxel? Were the two of them not quite as on the same wavelength as she'd originally thought? Then again, it may be a good thing right?

"Thanks!" More than just minding her manners, the gratefulness is shown simply to extinguish the creeping nerves, her hands firmly clenched into a fist as she punches the air above her. Then with her stance carefully shifted to spread her weight, Eris grins wide as she spreads her fingers wide.

A short whistle and Mercury is leaping into action, lighting up in a spark of electricity with a Thunder Shock.

"Don't bother with your poison attacks," Sam calls to his toxel, deducing that perhaps it's a steel type based on how metalic it looked. "Get in close!"

At Sam's command, toxel is surprisingly obedient. In battle, it's the one time she behaves. Because she's learned over the time she has spent with Sam thus far that he typically knew best and could pull some really interesting stuff out of his ass in terms of strategy.

Chubby limbs move surprisingly fast. Even as that thunder shock hits her, it creates static along her body enough to help in the nuzzle she attempts to give the meltan once she moved in close enough.

Hopefully, she'd paralyzed it.

Though Mercury notices the Toxel running at it, it doesn't quite seem to retaliate. Instead, it begins to melt into a puddle of Acid Armour, taking the hit with a sharp squeak.

Not quite what Eris had expected, but she has to trust her Meltan with making some of the decisions sometimes.

The only options that Sam had for battle with toxel was flail and nuzzle. That immediately had Sam frowning.

"This does not look good..."

It was going to be a painfully long battle unless Sam pulled a magic trick out of his hat.

Toxel looked curiously at the puddle that squeaked and suddenly scooped the puddle and started to try and eat the acidic armor of the meltan.

Sam's face grew blue with mild disgust and mostly just, astonishment.

"What are you doing??"

The question was whispered, and rhetorical, as he watched the toxel attempting to eat the meltan because it looked like delicious poison. She then let a BELCH.

Wildlife documentaries were often brutal, monotone narratives placed over a high-paced chase through the open fields as a Liepard probably sunk its claws into an unsuspecting Pidgey. She witnessed plenty of the wonders nature has to offer, seen much of the brutality of primal nature.

But this was definitely a first.

As the Toxel seems to make a snack out of it, Mercury's displeasure comes in the form of angry chitters. The blob of silver then swirls, forming into a somewhat solid structure as it pops out of the puddle to give her a Headbutt. Silence falls over her like a blanket, the only reaction she can muster being repeated blinking as she tries to sweep the confusion out of her mind.

"It... it really is-- Toxel!"

Sam spoke quickly at first, then gave a sharp bark of toxel's name. Toxel had gotten a headbutt but had went in for another munch cause the liquid felt funny in her mouth. But when Sam snapped at her, she did stop, and even went so far as to groan in protest.

"Focus or I'm withdrawing you and throwing the match."

Toxel glared back at Sam before pitching a fit. Her limbs began to FLAIL, aiming her tantrum at the liquid she wasn't allowed to eat anymore. Honestly Sam, how rude.

She's witnessing a battle of two toddlers, a Toxel throwing a temper tantrum and a Meltan who seems just about ready to lose a screw. Before she can even call out to Mercury, the silver blob is up and ready, Headbutting the Toxel once more before angrily chirping at her with an accusatory glare.

"Well... guess they're... being independent...?" She feels a little lost if she has to be honest, and it shows by how she shifts her weight from one foot to another. "Mercury, you doing okay?"

There's a chitter in response, but she hears more rage than reassurance of its wellbeing. At the very least, she can assume he's attentive enough to listen.

The headbutt caused the small baby pokémon to whine, reeling back and tumbling a bit away from the liquid. She fussed and complained, then ran forward once again to FLAIL at the liquid.

"This is embarrassing..."

It was more a statement to himself, that he should in fact be embarrassed, but he just crossed his arms. He wasn't embarrassed because he was fairly certain that the Toxel was the one who should have been, and definitely had been, embarrassed.

"She's not much left in her either."

He knew when the toxel was close to falling asleep, and that yawn mid-tantrum- was show enough she was growing tired. Tired enough to likely fall unconscious during the match. It wasn't uncommon.

She's about as embarrassed as Sam is disappointed, the temptation to facepalm only kept away by the reassuring nuzzles that Reiner gives her. This is fine! Razz has warned her about how learning to bond with legendary and mythical pokemons would be somewhat of a wild ride. And she recalls her mother telling her things along the same lines as well!

Though, the more she looks at it, the more she feels at a loss.

"Do your best, Mercury!" It isn't like she's been confused by any pokemon but she sure as hell feels like she's been hit by a truck. Her cheer seems a little weak but the thought is what counts, isn't it? The Meltan might not be able to understand her words but it can sort of understand that they have the same goal of beating the Toxel, right?

Though Mercury isn't able to Flail back at the baby pokemon, it's sure as hell able to strike back with a Flash Cannon. Once the Toxel is blinded by the light, it reaches out with one blobby arm, hoping to slap the baby in the face.

Sam's eyes widened as the flash canon hit, but even more impressive was the fact that the slap was what caused the baby to fly backward and rolled to a stop, 'x's over her eyes and her tongue flopping out of her mouth.

Sam gave a small smile, returning the toxel. Eris was announced the winner and Sam made his way out into the center to congratulate Eris, and, mostly, apologize.

"Great battle. I apologize for her behavior... mostly that she nearly ate your... what type of pokémon is that?"

It was saying something that he'd never seen anything like it.

Far from a great battle, if there was any word Eris would have used to describe their match, it was definitely scuffed. They'd barely worked together and the fight had devolved into somewhat of a fight between a toddler and a hissing cat. And yet, Mercury had seemed so proud as it waddled back to her, jiggling up and down and waving wildly at her as it trills.

When she sees it, she can't help but be proud for their very first win.

"Mercury's a Meltan!" Bending down to scoop the little blob, Eris cradles the fool and raises it up to Sam for a closer look. "I found it in a scrapyard and it's real funky."

Well, as funky as a leg-crushing entity can get. But he has no need to know of what happened.
