How long had he been sat at the kitchen table, surrounded by printed documents and notes scrawled with his poor penmanship? [break][break]

Long enough for his body to have grown stiff and for the sinking sun to paint the Sotally Tober in a faded orange, at the very least… [break][break]

Arms stretching high, Angelo groans as his back elongates with a tight twinge, sensitive new skin pulling taut over muscle. It shouldn’t be long until he was fully recovered now. Thank fuck... Flesh hadn’t been the only part of him pulled thin in recent weeks. [break][break]

Chair legs scrape along the kitchen floor when he makes to stand, stirring Orion from her doze with a soft snort. [break][break]

“Okay, Ori. Guess we should probably start thinking about dinner.” He says to the Lycanroc who’d been napping underneath the table, reaching out with a foot to rub her belly. She’s snoring again in five seconds but Angelo continues to talk, anyway. “How about carbonara tonight? Wait, shit. Think we’re out of eggs… Again. Scratch that.” [break][break]

A contemplative glance is spared at the clock, then towards the cluttered table where evidence of extensive research lay. [break][break]

Perhaps he should clean up first…

It's never a quiet affair when Captain Skyler Dross arrives home. Keys clatter against a wooden surface, a door is kicked shut, shoes thud onto the ground in a haphazard manner along with a still-damp bag.[break][break]

Articles of clothing are shed along the way, left to their own devices on the closest horizontal surface and leaving a trail of chaos in her wake, as she pads on bare feet to follow the sound of Angelo's voice. [break][break]

Ah, the kitchen. Of course. At least he could walk there unaided now.[break][break]

She catches sight of the scattered mess of paper sheets before she does Angelo, so when she peers into the kitchen her smooth expression has transitioned into a curious frown. "Hey, Angel." The greeting slips from her lips automatically, worn smooth by the last few weeks. "What's all this? Are you trying to become an accountant or something?" Rough fingertips linger over scribbled numbers and calculations, their meaning utterly lost on her no matter how much she squints her eyes.[break][break]

Unlike Angelo's extensive injuries, only a slight discoloration around her neck remains as proof of the danger that'd followed her into the depths. Comparatively, she'd gotten off easy.

“Welcome back,” the words casually call from within the kitchen cupboard that he’s rummaging through, their shared greetings having become automatic and increasingly easy over recent weeks. [break][break]

Angelo had quickly learned there was no set routine as to when Skyler would return at the end of each day, although the announcement of her arrival always brought a noisy burst of life to the otherwise quiet ship apartment without fail; and in his veins, too. [break][break]

So, when he turns with a smile, it’s not exactly unwarranted to catch sight of Skyler curiously hovering over the mess of papers he had run out of time to tidy away. [break][break]

“Or something,” he hums, stepping back over towards the kitchen table. “Though I guess you're half-right. I am going through some finances.” [break][break]

A scarred hand reaches out to clear some space, shuffling his notes into a messy pile. There’s some larger, more official looking documents bound together by an elastic band that he stacks on the bottom.[break][break]

It wasn’t like he’d been hiding this, per say but Angelo had hoped to have everything in order before bringing the contents of the papers up with her.[break][break]

“You ready to eat?”

As if Angelo's question had prompted it, Skyler's stomach loudly rumbles out a reply - having gone too long without a proper meal. To be fair, the captain had taken a sandwich along with her when she'd left in the morning (nevermind the fact that the sun is already halfway down the horizon). [break][break]

"Guess that answers your question." A wry smile pulls at her lips. Skyler slides onto the closest chair, her mess of golden curls spilling over the table's surface as she inelegantly slumps forward with a sigh. Sea salt lingers over her sun-kissed skin in pale, wave-like patterns. Unbidden, her silvery gaze drifts back to the documents now neatly stacked to the side and out of their way. [break][break]

The word finances has her scrunching her nose in distaste. "I could give my parents' accountant a call if you'd like. She handles most of my stuff too." The world would end before she'd spend any amount of time locked in a stuffy room handling finances. Or in any room for that matter. [break][break]

Her cheek is squished against the inside of her arm, silver peeking out from beneath dark lashes as she fixes her gaze on Angelo. "Don't tell me you're quitting and I'll have to hire a new cook."

Reaching to push blonde curls out of the captain’s face as she slumps in a chair, Angelo cards his fingers through dried, kinked strands interlaced with sea salt. Fondness sitting comfortably on the surface of ocean eyes. [break][break]

“That’s okay, Sunshine. I’ve got it covered,” he says, hands dropping to lean his weight on the table as they engage in small talk. Angelo had it figured out more than she knew. This kind of stuff, although mind-numbingly dull, wasn’t all that difficult for reasons unshared. “I’m just checking what I have sitting around after taking all this time off…” His brow crinkles, dissatisfaction at his situation masking half-truths. [break][break]

Just as he pushes away from the table to get started on dinner, Angelo grins and lets out a chuckle. Skyler's comment – her peeking silver eyes – keeping him ensnared. [break][break]

“What, quit and let some new cook run wild in my kitchen? Changing everything and ordering Sammy around? Not a chance.” It’s no secret that he’d grown increasingly attached to many things onboard. The kitchen being one of them. [break][break]

“It’s The Mart I’m quitting, actually...” Angelo slowly shares after a hesitant pause, reveal punctuated by him opening the fridge door.

There's no visible reaction to Angelo's fingers brushing her curls aside except for a softening of bright silver, quickly hidden by fluttering eyelids and a slight shift in position. Her eyes travel the length of his fingers as he pulls away, words trickling in through a growing haze of fatigue. [break][break]

"It can't be that bad." Weeks spent sharing the same space have given Skyler the opportunity to learn the small shifts and subtle changes in Angelo's expressions, though not enough to guess at the reason for the tempest beneath. "You don't spend much," she mumbles, low enough that Angelo might not have heard. [break][break]

Little did she know. [break][break]

"Yeah, I think Sammy's gotten attached to you. You wouldn't break his little green heart, would you?" She deliberately omits herself, a mischievous smirk playing on her lips as Angelo goes about making dinner. "The Sotally Tober needs its cook." A faint smell of sulphur still lingers in some parts of the kitchen from Skyler's latest egg misadventure...[break][break]

Consciousness is starting to slip from her when Angelo's statement jolts through her like an electric shock. Immediately alert, Skyler's head rises from the table to pierce holes into the half-hidden blue-eyed annoyance on the other side of the kitchen. "You're quitting?" A pause, something hopeful inadvertently slipping into her voice. "Does that mean I can finally cancel my weekly PokeMart order? I still have a full box of unused pokeballs somewhere..."

“Never.” Angelo throws a playful smile right back at her just before he disappears behind the fridge door. It goes unsaid that it’s not a little green Gulpin on his mind. “You can trust me with his tiny, gluttonous heart.” [break][break]

In the brief pause where she looks close to succumbing to fatigue, another sleepy creature shifts underneath the table; Orion flopping her chin on Skyler’s foot. The Lycanroc doesn’t budge when the woman straightens in her seat. [break][break]

“You haven’t cancelled that yet?” From scavenging through the depths of the fridge, Angelo’s disbelieving laughter materialises. He raises an eyebrow, smirking even though he can’t be seen. “I’m here all the time. You don’t need an excuse to lure me to your boat anymore, you know.” [break][break]

Emerging with ingredients in his hands, Angelo casually nudges the door shut with a foot. “I’d say get your last orders in but I don’t think I’m going back once my leave is up… Not if I can help it, anyway.” He affirms on carefully level tones, not looking at Skyler as he takes the mushrooms and other vegetables towards the countertop, ready to prep. [break][break]

It’s only after putting them down that he peers towards Skyler out of the corner of blue eyes, subtly searching her expression. Wondering if it might ease the weight in his gut.

Captain Dross looks the Sotally Tober's chef dead in the eyes, lips curving into an unapologetic smirk. "I know I don't." If there is another layer of meaning lingering just under the surface of her words, refusing to sink into the depths, she swiftly ignores it despite the way it inevitably seeps into her voice. Soft. Tender. ~~Loving~~.

Angelo's measuring look is nearly missed due to a furry chin settling on Skyler's foot and momentarily stealing her attention away. Her hand reaches down automatically to pat the Lycanroc's head, fingers burying themselves in coarse fur and scratching that sweet spot behind her ears. As subtly as the captain can (which is to say, not at all), a treat is snuck under the table.

"Does that mean you're a full time cook on the Sotally Tober now?" Skyler doesn't really expect Angelo to work here, evidenced by the - so far - lack of any proper payment and the sharp, taunting grin that is sent his way. "Sammy will be delighted." The captain lets herself relax against the wooden surface again, utterly oblivious to the growing tension exuding from the blue-eyed man. And yet.

"Didn't think you'd be quitting so soon." A calloused finger traces the knots in the wood, drawing nonsensical patterns and following them with her eyes before raising them to meet Angelo's. Nails sink into the wood, almost of their own volition. "What's up, Angel?"

And why does she feel like she's stuck on land looking at a brewing ocean storm?

Skyler’s teasing grin is met with but a faint curl of his lips, her words only just scratching the surface before he’s turning back to dinner preparation. [break][break]

“I bet he would. He’d have full-time backup to help keep the kitchen protected from unruly invaders.” If there’s a slight, distracted flatness to Angelo’s voice when he reciprocates the playful comment, it’s masked by the sound of running water when he starts washing the vegetables. [break][break]

There’s a stretch of silence then, leaving Angelo to stew in the tension that sits thick in the base of his throat; swelling like the rising water in the sink as produce is scrubbed clean and he stays clouded. [break][break]

“What’s up, Angel?”[break][break]

That pause continues even when Skyler breaks it. Such a simple, innocent question tightening the hold on his neck, even when he wants to breathe the smog that lingers within him out into the open. [break][break]

Three seconds drag on by and even when Angelo finally manages to part his lips, words trickle out slow. Unaccustomed to extending himself – not even with her – in this way. [break][break]

“Nothing. Just… The Mart's income isn't going to cut it anymore, that's all… But it's fine; was always meant to be a short-term thing anyway.” He says with a shrug, drying his clean hands before tossing the rag on the countertop. “Figured it makes sense to start applying for something new now, while I have the time to spare.” [break][break]

Aquatic pools snag hold of shards of silver, leading towards the pile of documents on the table…

Skyler has grown used to the stretches of comfortable silence between the two of them, early in the morning when her fingertips reach for the edges of scarred flesh with a thoughtful frown; and at night when all is quiet and they drown into each other.

When Angelo turns to her now, however, there is nothing comfortable about the words hoarded behind the tempestuous surface of ocean blue eyes. It reminds her of waterlogged money bills painstakingly stretched out over her kitchen countertops; of the quiet desperation that slips into his expression when he thinks she isn't looking; of tongues bitten too many times, caged behind the need to survive.

Of the way she keeps pushing and prodding at him, uncaring for whatever barricade he's set upon himself.
[break][break]
"You're applying for a new job?" The captain stills, bright silver focusing on Angelo like a whetted knife even though Skyler doesn't mean for it to. She follows his gaze to the chaotic mess of documents laid out before her. No matter how much she looks, they remain meaningless beneath the calloused pads of her fingers. For a second she swears she can see familiar lettering in some of them, but discards the possibility immediately.

Given the amount of work that has gone into these, Skyler briefly wonders if she should've asked Angelo to take care of her finances instead of borrowing her family's accountant. Then again, he'd look horrible behind a desk.

"You know, there is plenty to do around here in the Sotally Tober."

While the captain thumbs at the documents, Angelo turns his back to rummage through cupboards, retrieving a pot to boil water in. It does little to distract him, just as the clattering fails to fill an uncomfortable silence. [break][break]

On the stove, an open flame is brought to life with a soft whoosh. [break][break]

“Y’know, I would’ve thought you’d seen enough of me around here lately.” He says on light-hearted tones; a familiar response to counter the tension sitting heavy on his shoulders. One that Angelo now forces himself to reel in, no sooner than it had escaped. Determined – wanting – to leap through the hesitation that had so far held him back… [break][break]

“But I’ve actually already got a couple of applications to send out.” [break][break]

A blade glints silver. One held tight in his palm as he descends the edge of the knife. Another he can imagine piercing into the back of his neck. [break][break]

Somehow, the thought of focused, silver eyes feels more piercing. But he doesn’t retreat, he’s already falling. Into the conversation. Into Skyler. All there’s left to do is land. [break][break]

“So far, I’ve got one for some place in Mauville. Forgot the name but it’s in there somewhere, if you wanted to check… Silph Co. And I think Devon might be hiring, too.” Angelo shares the paths that could shape his future as if he’s listing the vegetables that he’s cutting into tiny pieces; flat and indifferent. [break][break]

And even though each name that falls off his tongue is punctuated with a rhythmic, certain chop, inside it feels like the flash of the blade is slicing beyond the tangible to nick against his spirit. Edge catching against what's left unsaid. [break][break]

The last still lingers heavy in his throat yet; befitting of being the weightiest document, sat deceptively innocent, at the bottom of the pile.

Angelo's attempt at humor falls flat in the wake of his next statement, the papers under the distracted scrutiny of one Captain Dross suddenly becoming much more ominous. But it is only when he speaks of the applications he'd sent out that something heavy and unpleasant settles into the captain's gut. Her eyes scan the documents, narrowed against the brewing storm that breaks against their increasingly steely surface with each name she recognizes.

Only the rhythmic staccato of a knife chopping through vegetables fills the empty space after his confession; Skyler's voice remaining absent as she paws through the papers until she finds Silph Co. glaring up at her from the bottom of the pile. She doesn't have to look for too long; even through the legal jargon that assaults her brain, the meaning behind it remains undoubtedly clear.

And suddenly Captain Skyler Dross bursts into disbelieving laughter. Its edges scrape raw against a nameless emotion that tightens its hold around her throat, impossible to be ignored despite the captain's best efforts. It is a far cry from the joyous, unabashed sound the courier has gotten used to; or even the quiet chuckle that falls between them while they're ribbing each other, caught in the other's gravity.

This laughter is sharp, a whetted blade reflected in the tempestuous gaze that settles over Angelo. Willing to pierce, but not hurt. "What, you're going to be a paper pusher now, Angel?" She's reminded of the ravenous depths within deep blue, swirling fast with a deep-set longing for the stars that burn above. A flickering fire that blooms, undaunted, at her not-so-subtle prodding - while she basks in the flames that lick at her fingers, wanting more. Always wanting more.

To watch them die out behind an oak desk and under the weight of soulless tasks would be... Would be...

Skyler’s laughter, although twisting the tense knot in his stomach taut, is not one that brings Angelo offense. Hell, he’d laugh too, if this wasn’t his approaching reality. [break][break]

Angelo turns to her then, catching sight of silver, hurricane eyes. Tempestuous, unchained and dangerous in a million alluring ways – calling to him more than she knew. [break][break]

And for a brief moment, he’s drawn in. Swept up in the turbulent clouds of Captain Skyler Dross’s storm, where her wild force of nature inspires him to take. Encourages the rebellion and passion and hunger that burns within brighter. Breathes love into him. [break][break]

But unbeknownst to her, those burning molten eyes also solidifies the resolve…[break][break]

Angelo’s path that calls him into the high blue yonder is of his own making; where the boundless skies run parallel to relentless seas. [break][break]

And he’s had enough of moon-eyed wishing while he remains stuck with both feet planted on the ground. Had enough of chasing, while she sails away on her own course. [break][break]

So he’s going to reach for it, steal stars out of the inky infinite with his own fingertips. Even if the journey is long and arduous, he'll take it for himself. His freedom. [break][break]

The sound is ripped from her throat in a snarl before she even realizes she's doing it. The screech of a bench being dragged across the floor fills the silence that follows, pushed away when Captain Dross rises from her previous position to lean threateningly over the wooden table in the young man's direction. Documents crumple under the strength of her grip on the table, hapless victims of whatever vicious emotions take hold of Skyler.

For a single, feverish second she thinks of ripping them to shreds.

Her eyes flash with a storm that has just reached shore, chaotic destruction tempered by affection, by concern, by - some unknown emotion that wells up without her meaning to. It barely wears at the razor-sharp edge of a steely gaze that fixes itself on Angelo, however. Captain Skyler Dross is too adept at fighting through her problems. At fighting through everything.

She will, she thinks, fight through this too if she has to. And woe to whoever gets in her way. Angelo included.

"You're not working there." The image is so abhorrent it sends shivers down her spine. "Angel, you've got a million other options. Why would you-" She grits her teeth, chewing through the defiance that coats her tongue. Unbidden, the image of Angelo drunkenly dancing with her while bellowing sea shanties flashes behind her eyes. Free. Joyful. Hers.

"You've got the Sotally Tober." And she didn't mean as its cook.
