the chicken's next — cut to bite-sized pieces and thrown in the pan to stir. he places a cover on top, moving back to the cutting board.

[break][break] "it's cheaper than ordering out," he says, but knows it's a cop-out. flynn may not admit it easily, but he likes cooking. there's something soft in the way flynn says the words next, the same way he is whenever his mother is brought up. "my mom taught me how to cook, you know." it's one of the few memories that are still pure, not tarnished by rocket or thea or heartbreak.

[break][break] he grabs the mangos they brought from the store - peels and cuts them. a few sprinkles of seasoning are added - garlic powder, paprika, cilantro, paprika. he adds some more onions and tomato for extra measure, squeezing it all together with some fresh lime. then he mixes it together.

too much for someone as indifferent as he is. perhaps he'll try to someday.

he sips, finishing the rest of his drink before setting it on the counter. he doesn't walk off for a refill just yet.

"do you know ratatouille?"

similar to flynn, what theo says next is softer than usual.

"my mom used to make it for us. i loved it."

[break][break] the quip comes naturally, too quick to think about. he moves back to the stove, peeking under the cover to look at the chicken. he shuffles the ingredients around with a spatula.

[break][break] his head inclines backwards, blinking, at theo's words and shakes his head. "no but," he pauses, looking contemplative. "could probably make it, if i had a recipe." flynn isn't good at many things, but he'd always been good at following directions. ever since he'd been a kid.

[break][break] flynn moves around the kitchen, the aroma of seasoned meat and deliciousness rising in the air. his stomach grumbles — he'd forgotten to eat breakfast that morning, having just stepped off a night shift at the precinct.

[break][break] he turns the stove off, the meat cooked through. he then pulls out a tortilla wrap with one hand, splaying it against the wooden surface of the cutting board. gingerly, he places the meat along the wrap, sprinkling the mango salsa and then folds it. unlike everything else flynn seems to do, the movement is careful — gentle, almost.

[break][break] he gestures. "alright, you can try it now."

he watches flynn move and prepare with such ease and simplicity that for a second it makes him believe that he too could perhaps cook. but if only it were that simple.

at the invitation, theo reaches for the taco, lifts it to his mouth, and bites.

swallowing, he nods and says:

"it's good."

for whatever reason, he adds:

"i like it."

while theo takes a bite out of the first taco, flynn makes quick work of putting together the next couple. he plates them seamlessly, only glancing at the other when spoken to.

[break][break] he reaches down to grab one the tacos that he had prepared himself, relishing in the taste that the sweet and tangy salsa makes with the seasoned chicken. it's something that he hasn't been able to appreciate in a while - the quiet intimacy of sharing dinner with another - and he takes a moment to relish in it.

he's not wrong.

[break][break] frankly, flynn cooks as often as he's able to though it's never anything special like this. he picked the ingredients especially for theo, since it was the first time. most of the time though, he'd prefer to cook something easy or simple. he's not a picky eater.

[break][break] to be honest, it's mostly habit that he cooks for himself at all.

[break][break] "i could teach you, if you wanted," he says and then adds, a bit cheekily. "sure your daughter would appreciate something better than burnt toast."

honestly, Victoria Beckett would appreciate anything other than chicken on toast, but he's never quite found it in him to actually spend the time and energy to learn.

[break][break] the precinct had him working all sorts of odd hours, but he would be in slateport for a little while longer. something about them being short of staff, so they'd sent him over for the extra bulk work.

after that, he walks over to the old-looking couch and falls into it, scattering small amounts of dust into the air. his feet rest on the coffee table as he reaches for a remote.

after moments of flickering, the television finally flashes on.

"you're welcome to join me."
