WHEN TWO BECOME ONE

“MISTER CLAYTON.”

Fernando’s smile is the most charming it’ll ever be. Unlike the rest of the trash that stinks up Hoenn’s coastline, Oscar is a name and face he has to pay his respects to. What he knows about the man measures very little but the snippets he derives from Lulu Flint and Katherine Fairburne spells out more than Oscar would ever care to admit.

All this under the pretense of two of the biggest power players in Hoenn’s economic high society.

“I didn’t take you to be out here participating but I suppose you’d say the same about me.” He even laughs to make the small talk seem more amicable.

Fernando reaches for his belt and runs his thumb against the topside of each of his balls. Careful observation would note that most of them are on his left side. The right portion of his twin belts is noticeably empty.

“I’ve actually exhausted most of my Pokemon already.”

He pauses.

“Unless–brave enough to see how you’d fare against an Avatar, Clayton?”

Before Oscar has a chance to answer–in fact, as Fernando even mentions it, his MISTY TERRAIN starts to form. Lavender fumes start to circle around his body, a tattered cap of glittery and sparkles.

No one’s turned him down yet.

Oscar raised an eyebrow at Fernando's challenge. Shit, he had forgotten that Fernando was a demi-god or whatever the fuck Avatars are. As the pink mist began filling the arena, Oscar had to admit he felt something of a chill. A dark feeling that flowed through his nostrils and grasped at his lungs. He sniffed several times, his eyes watering as he realized what had afflicted him.

"Is--is this lavender? Shit I'm allergic." Oscar knew that the mist wasn't literally made of lavender, but his body couldn't tell the difference and immediately went into defense mode. Already he could feel his sinuses begin to fill with a discomforting stuffiness. This would have normally inclined him to refuse Fernando's offer, but he found himself unable to express his discomfort. 

Even with his body preparing for an onslaught that wasn't coming, Oscar felt--at ease. Perhaps even a tad happy. Maybe this wasn't such a bad idea after all. Oscar smiled, his eyes mildly glossy with admiration. "Y-yeah, sure. You know, fuck it why not? How hard could it be?" Glimpses of the absolute horror Oscar faced when meeting the legendary Zapdos flashed through his mind, yet the mist calmed whatever anxiety he would have felt.

Oscar picked a pokeball off of his belt, the only one he had brought to this particular battle. He hadn't expected to use her against a legendary pokemon, but surely she would do fine. Especially with the new training regiment Oscar spent months implementing personally. He released his champion, which would appear as a battle hardened blissey named Mercy (the 2nd). Mercy twitched her scarred eye, the Misty Terrain filling her with just the boost she needed to prepare herself for this bought. Oscar folded his arms, waiting with anticipation for Fernando's god.

WHEN TWO BECOME ONE

THE DISCARDED MENTION OF ALLERGIES DOES LITTLE TO DISSUADE HIM. While a moment of concern passes over his features–an appearance he makes out of feigned respect–it dissipates when the CEO accepts.

“We’ll see,” Fernando prods with a brief chuckle.

The MISTY TERRAIN starts to condense into a smog thick enough to be opaque. From its curtain, the Tapu Fini arrives, materializing from the silhouette like a staged magic trick. The deity floats in the place, shell already pried open, staring blankly at Oscar and his Blissey.

Oscar’s Pokemon isn’t one he expected but then again what Pokemon had he presumed Oscar to carry around? He knows very little about the man aside from public information so his judgement molded by first impressions. The worn scar over the Pokemon’s eye tells him all he needs to know about its battle experience regardless of how ill fitting it seems on the species.

“Battle routine set.”

The MISTY TERRAIN pulses with new life as the ground itself lives to serve. Electric whips lash out as the power congeals into a singular lance. With no more than a pointed finger, bolts of NATURE’S MADNESS spring forth, leaping into a heap of fairy dust with every bound forward.

Ooooo you feel that Oscar? That little tightening in your tummy? That's the sweet pull of regret baby! Oscar thought he was ready to face a legendary pokemon, but after the thing actually showed up he was 100% sure that he wasn't. It looked about half as intimidating as the horror that was Zapdos, and yet Oscar still wanted to run. This fish looking motherfucker radiated power, and like a prolonged brown note that aura nearly made Oscar shit himself. 

"Well um--someone's compensating." Oscar felt the need to deflect his obvious fear with humor, but the effort fell flat thanks to his trembling voice. As the deity made the first move, Oscar shook the shock from his head. It was go time, no room for panic. "Mercy, tank and Ice Beam." 

Mercy stood her ground, unleashing a concentrated ray of ice toward its opponent. She had half a mind to try and dodge the attack anyway when she was through, but it simply wasn't possible. It was coming from everywhere. As the attack hit, she felt her moderately heavy body being flung like a ping pong ball. She bounced around the arena, pain radiating up and down her body. She finally came to a stop near her original position, rolling onto her back with a heavy huff.

Oscar was once again in shock, that attack was unreal. "Mercy, can you get up?" Mercy felt like she had just spent an afternoon in a blender, but she managed to hop to her feet. Good thing too, because this battle wasn't even close to being over.

WHEN TWO BECOME ONE

THE ICE BEAM HITS WITH UNCANNY PRECISION. It strikes a CRITICAL point between the shell’s lips, directly onto Tapu Fini’s main body. With the MISTY TERRAIN expunged by NATURE’S MANDESS, the protective veil is unable to halt the creeping ice. It crawls along the point of contact, a slow FREEZE from the inside out.

Fernando stares, perplexed, but pleasantly amused. Whether it be sheer luck or raw skill, the reason matters not. This battle no longer seems to be a one-sided slant. Based off the outcome of that move alone, it seems those scars are well earned.

In an effort to combat the icy chills of being encased in ice, the Tapu Fini relaxes. Empty eyes continue to stare at the Blissey, focused on a CALM MIND, as it binds its time for revenge.

It seemed as if Mercy's training paid off. Oscar sneered as the so-called god froze under the icy pressure of Mercy's beam. It brought a sense of security, avatars may wield legends but these deities were pokemon all the same. Still, a pokemon as powerful as this probably wouldn't stay frozen for long. Mercy would have to act fast.

Oscar snapped his fingers, "Mercy, Thunderbolt!" The plump battle medic summersaulted a few feet closer to her target before unleashing a barrage of lightning. As her battle hardened eyes locked with her opponent's a chill ran down her spine. Something was off, those eyes had no fear at all.

Was it planning something?

WHEN TWO BECOME ONE

IN ACCORDANCE TO OSCAR’S WISH, the THUNDERBOLT strikes true as well. Electric arcs dance against the ice that envelopes the Tapu Fini. Unknownst to those around it, the lightning seeps deep, PARALYZING the Legendary as it remains encased as ice.

For now, it does nothing. However, around it, the MISTY TERRAIN starts to steepen. It contorts into a wide array of shapes. Up above, a pool of it twists into an orb, a false moon that fires off a MOONBLAST down below and toward the Blissey.

As the thunderbolt hit, Mercy watched intently as electricity surged across her opponent's frozen body. She was so pleased with herself that she snickered, letting out a hardy chuckle at the god's expense. Oscar's immediately became irate, "Why are you gloating? The fight isn't over, stay--"

Oscar's eyes widened as a false moon appeared above the god's head, "Flamethrower!" Mercy ceased her chuckling as the command was given, reacting quickly by immediately unleashing a burst of flame in front of her. She had noticed the moon too late, and the blast had already began hurdling toward her as the fire sprayed outward. 


The fire was not meant to prevent the attack entirely, but rather soften the blow enough so that when Mercy was inevitably hit she could continue the fight. As Oscar predicted, the blast cut through Mercy's fire and smashed her with incredible force. She was tossed back toward Oscar, landing on her stomach in a smoldering heap.

Concern crossed over Oscar's face, did his trick not work? Mercy twitched, slowly rolling back onto her feet as she huffed. Oscar was relived, but that relief was short lived as his opponent made their next move.

WHEN TWO BECOME ONE

“CLAYTON!”

Fernando’s voice booms over the sound of their attacks colliding. His sense of authority smother the flames before they can catch on. Despite the alarm of his voice, it comes not from hate or malice, but as a warning.

Tapu Fini remains FROZEN, well preserved in an exaggeratively large block of ice. However, it’s eyes remains traced onto its target. As the Blissey moves so does its iris, still framed, picture perfect for the horror movie to come.

MISTY TERRAIN coils around the ice. It seems to have a life of its own, moving independently, flocking back to the source. No matter how the glitter sparkles it can’t penetrate the ice and after a few futile attempts it stops. Instead, it starts to whirl within itself, spiraling into something much larger.

The GUARDIAN OF ALOLA takes form, beady red eyes piercing through the fairy’s veil. It glares down at the Blissey, massive in size, daunting as it towers over the arena. Few live to see Tapu Fini’s Z-move realized. Even fewer make it out alive.

Fernando's voice takes Oscar by surprise, causing the trainer to briefly look up at his opponent. He gazed upon him for mere moments before the frozen god began to expand. Oscar could feel the energy coming off its body as it grew, which only intensified as the ice shattered. A great gust of wind slammed into Oscar, nearly pushing him down as Tapu Fini took on its true form. 

It was--astonishing. Oscar looked up in awe as the creature's might radiated across the arena. The repressed memories of Zapdos came rushing back, the very same fear he felt that day tightening his chest. Yet this time the fear was no for himself, but for Mercy. The determined Blissey looked battered and bruised, marked by the raw strength of her opponent. The attacks that hit her were normal, if she were hit by this...

Oscar sighed, lowering his head as he raised Mercy's pokeball. Mercy was too busy staring down her enormous foe to notice, and before she could charge into battle one last time she would be withdrawn. Oscar raised the pokeball above his head, attempting to yell over Tapu Fini's raging energy.

"I concede Fernando! Call off the attack!"

WHEN TWO BECOME ONE

“I CAN’T!”

Fernando extends both his arms, reeling in the MISTY TERRAIN as he tries to minimize the power invest into the GUARDIAN OF ALOLA. But it remains daunting as the Tapu Fini sheds broken ice. Few have pushed it into such fury—an opponent of the Blissey’s caliber is few and seldom at this tournament.

Only when Oscar returns his Pokemon does the Tapu Fini succumb. It blinks once, blank, before the giant disappears. The battleground slowly returns to normal as the Pokemon simply sits there, staring at Oscar.

Fernando scowls inwardly before giving a sigh of relief.

“You okay, Clayton?”

For a moment Oscar thought he was actually going to die. This titan was going to blindly unleash its fury and just end him right here--during a fuckin' skirmish. However his luck paid off, and the deity would calm itself as it realized that the battle was finished. Oscar let out a sigh of relief, his heart pumping at a high enough speed to be physically felt outside his chest.

Fernando approached, and it took Oscar a moment to realize that he was talking to him. Oscar shook his head, knocking away the haze from his expression. 

"Y-yeah. Absolutely, what a fuckin' rush." 

Oscar chuckled, a poor attempt to mask his fleeting terror. Next time someone offers to spar with their legendary, Oscar's gonna pass. Until he gets his own that is...

WHEN TWO BECOME ONE

FERNANDO DOESN’T MAKE LIGHT OF THE SITUATION. There’s no small talk or forced laughter that can belittle the intensity of their brief albeit menacing standoff. So, instead, he fishes for the only excusable resolution for their situation: acknowledgement of his fault and Oscar’s merit.

“Not many can get Tapu Fini to unravel like that. Consider it a mark of reputation.”

He gestures first for preparation before lobbing the SILPH BADGE in his direction.

“Congratulations, Clayton.”
