Pale chalk catches on her callouses, roughened pads rubbing the substance along the palm of her hand with practised motions and hiding sun-kissed skin under a layer of bone-white. A distracted motion to brush an unruly curl away from her face paints a smear of white across her nose and right cheek, unnoticed to the stretching ship captain and the tiny Shellos on her shoulder.

"Remember, Sluggard. No mercy."

Looking up, the cliff extends past her vision to stretch upwards into darker blue streaked with wisps of pink and orange. Sunset paints the sheer rock face with shades of gold while casting in shadow all the little crevices and handholds.

Perfect.

As for Captain Dross, she finds her breath stolen by the rush of anticipation that simmers quietly under her skin, reflected, feverish, in quicksilver eyes and the brief flash of teeth.

Impatiently waiting for someone to step up to the challenge.

A thick Kalosian accent chuckles in Skyler's direction. For all the pain of resurfacing memories and distracted thought, Emma had not forgotten her.

It is unfortunate that Emma still cannot yet see. Her eyes are hidden behind one discreet white bandage and disguised by dark sunglasses. The sun agitates, but its worth it.

"Surely you will go easy on me?"

Captain Dross might've expected many people to step up, and wouldn't have been surprised had it been someone she knew. The sight of Anna, however, does send a sudden thrill down her back.

She hadn't seen the other woman since their unfortunate meeting in the Sootopolis excursion. And while Skyler has met the woman a number of times in their past, Angelo's account of the event has the captain narrowing her eyes.

It doesn't take long for the scrutiny to fall over the subtle hint of bandages peeking out from around the woman's sunglasses.

"That's new." Unseen, a frown creases the skin between Skyler's eyebrows. Despite everything, she can't help but miss the fierce gleam of gold in the woman's expression.

"If you're willing to compete with me, Anna," Skyler starts, voice rolling with equal parts amusement and challenge, "then I'm certainly not going to go easy on you."

She allows a breathy chuckle, attention drawn by the Shellos on the woman's shoulder. Though she evidently cannot distinguish what exactly, it is, she does realize it is uncannily familiar.[break][break]

It reminds her of the way THEO BECKETT had set his on his shoulder. It was.. affectionate and kind, something she hadn't expected. [break][break]

And given the fact that Skyler was a woman of the sea with her very own ship, she could only assume that it was a water-type Pokemon she held. Which made her choice fairly simple.[break][break]

Emma releases a Galvantula.[break][break]

Somewhere in between their greetings and Skyler's challenge, Emma lifts her fingers to her sunglasses and to the banadage beneath them. She exhales, offering a small smile.[break][break]

"Don't we all." Skyler can relate to the feeling, more than Emma probably knew, more than what would be considered healthy. Given the risks Captain Dross takes on a daily basis, the fact that she's alive is either a testament to her ingenuity (not likely), to her luck (eh) or to her willfull stubborness.

She lets the obvious question slip from her tongue despite the curiosity that burns behind the silvery surface of her eyes - focused on the bandages rather than on the pokemon Emma releases onto the sands.

"Ready, then, Anna?" Skyler doesn't help the woman to the rocky cliffside, but she makes sure to project her voice loud and clear, betraying her position.

The first handholds are easy to find, deep grooves deliberately sculpted to give beginners a headstart. Things would start to become harder the higher up they went.

Emma allows a huff of laughter and a slight shake of her head. But there is something undeniably tense that exists between the two women, something unspoken and unreadable. If Emma had her sight, perhaps she might have seen it.[break][break]

But she doesn't, and so she appears unassuming. Maybe that helps take the edge off.[break][break]

"For you? I don't know."[break][break]

Her lip twitches in a note of amusement and she steps forward in pursuit of the young woman. Slowly, her hand presses to the warm rocky cliffside, and she glances up. Her Galvantula falls into step nearby, fully prepared to catch her if she falls.[break][break]

But she wouldn't.[break][break]

Her fingers fit into the footholds with ease, with confidence. Slowly, she begins to pull herself up.

Somehow, the fact that Anna starts to climb like she's done it a million times before - even with her injured eyes - doesn't manage to surprise the ship captain. There's an initial jolt as the woman starts maneuvering with undeniable skill, then Skyler's whole body (and brain) kicks into motion.

Calloused fingers find the holes and crevices hewn into the rock, seeking handholds as Skyler quickly follows after her opponent.

A charged, undeniable tension remains between the two of them, though it only serves to sharpen the intoxicating rush of adrenaline that washes over it. Competitiveness reflected in an eager silver gaze.

"Do a lot of climbing while coordinating, Anna?" Skyler is meant to tease, but there's something intent underlining her words.

On her shoulder the tiny sea slug squeaks, watching the ground distance itself from them with growing alarm.

It hadn't occurred to her, genuinely, how odd she must look. [break][break]

You could blame that on the concussion and memory loss.[break][break]

Emma does not hesitate, however, in her climb. To slow down now or feign stupidity now would be even odder. So she continues, pushing through the sarcastic, heated laugh that bubbles in her chest.[break][break]

"Mind, body and soul, Skyler Dross. You need a strong body to bring a strong soul to the stage."[break][break]

The Galvantula will occasionally make a noise or brush against her, aiding the blinded woman up the cliffside.

"I'll remember that." A few rocks break loose from her hold, their muted crashing against the horizontal surface below followed by a few curses from the captain. Stubborn to a fault, the captain keeps climbing in an attempt to shorten the distance between herself and her adversary.

"Does that mean," Skyler starts, pausing to hoist herself up to another handhold with a small grunt, "that you need a strong mind to have a strong body?" Many things could be said about Skyler's virtues, namely that book smarts definitely wasn't one of them. Give her an equation and watch her pale.

In fact, one could rightly conclude that she is a bit of a dumbass.

By her shoulder, Shellos is not having a good time. At all. Maybe it's the nervousness at being so far from the ground, but its squeak of alarm is quickly followed by an ominous darkening above their heads.

A few seconds after, the first droplets of RAIN DANCE start to pelt Skyler's skin.

She slips just slightly, taking a breath and pausing to reposition and calm the flutter in her chest. Without eyesight, the stakes were higher. Right now, she was relying heavily on her sense of balance and sound, her sense of touch. [break][break]

"But I also believe that a strong mind is subjective."[break][break]

Above, rain begins to trickle. Along with it, the crackle of electricity, of energy, of doom. It rumbles, malevolent in the darkening clouds. Thunder rolls and Emma feels her heartbeat quicken. Her clothing grows damp and the rain drowns out the noise. Another sense, lost in the wind.[break][break]

Her grip tightens, and she can feel her Galvantula trembling with anticipation.

Handholds become slippery under her calloused fingertips, damp rock and packed earth fighting against her hold on them.

She barely notices the brewing maelstrom in her struggle to climb ahead. Only when darkness falls over the last dying sunlight does silver eyes blink in surprise, robbed of their vision to be left in shadowed twilight.

So much for that advantage.

On her shoulder, little Sluggard squeaks out an embarrassed apology, to which Skyler replies with a too-brief pat before resuming her path upwards. "Don't worry, we'll get this either way." Heavy panting follows her words as she hoists herself up to the next portion of the rock face, inexorably making her way up.

"Sorry 'bout that, Sluggard gets nervous with heights." Somehow, the captain doesn't sound sorry at all.

There was something undeniably tense about the situation she found herself in. As if she had stepped into a nest and the hive was sitting in silence, vibrating with energy and not yet ready to devour. She was the giant hornet venturing into the bee's nest to scout, only to be trapped by a hundred tiny bodies with one sole purpose to burn her alive.[break][break]

"It's a water-type, meant for the sea. I would be nervous, too."[break][break]

But she isn't. Not really. The hitch in her throat is from uncertainty, not from lack of confidence. [break][break]

Her fingers bite into the cliffside, her grip painful. Her nails protest from the effort, but she holds on and pulls herself up anyway. Now was not the time to exhibit weakness. [break][break]

Galvantula exudes an unnerving BUG BUZZ as they ascend, glancing to the sky and the dark clouds. Thunder continues to roll, lighting them up with white-hot light. Rain beats down harder as time goes on, turning her hair to ink.

The lip of the cliff taunts Skyler, flashes of lightning illuminating it once in a while during the captain's painstaking climb upwards. Sweat mixes with rainwater, washing down her neck and back, dripping from her drenched clothes and onto the ground below.

Skyler basks in it, every twinge of her muscles, every laboured inhale, ever inch that she pushes through.

Somewhere near the horizon, wisps of pink and orange burst through the clouds occasionally, illuminating the darkened landscape with golden light. But it isn't near enough to make the climb any easier, especially when handholds and footholds become deliberately scarce. Skyler's just reaching for the next handhold, stretching her body as far as it can go, when the Bug Buzz shivers through her bones. She's teetering on the edge of falling down when Sluggard's Earth Power sucks her arm back into the cliff face, stabilizing her.

'Shit, that was close.'

Silver eyes blink water away as she sets them on Anna, a smidge ahead of her along with her Galvantula. And while so far they'd maintained their distance from each other, Skyler moves to deliberately shorten it. "The Galvantula, Sluggard. Get it."

With a little serious squeak, the Shellos makes use of the muddied cliff face to summon a torrent of MUDDY WATER over the cliff's surface and above the Galvantula.

What is she doing?[break][break]

The earth rumbles, drumming against her fingers. Agitation keeps her warm, and she gasps as she breaches the surface - moments after Skyler, probably.[break][break]

Emma rolls onto her back and then pushes herself to her knees, then her feet. The MUDDY WATER slaps at the Galvantula, drenching it. Her Pokemon remains below them still, clinging to the rocky wall with desperation so as to not be pushed off.[break][break]

In retaliation, Galvantula sprays an ELECTRO WEB as she, too, manages to reach the top. [break][break]
