The eyeroll was not lost on him, but he didn’t mention it. Instead, he gave a sigh.

These were the times he wished he had someone to offer him advice. His father was too far on the other side of things—and not only that, but he was the reason why this couldn’t happen.

Bo knew too well how manipulative the man was. He had Cian and there still in his grasp, and he knew he wouldn’t hesitate to pluck what was important to him right up off the streets if it meant he’d come running back.

“No.” He shook his head, and turned it away, feeling defeated by himself. “Sorry, Cian.”

Bo didn’t trust himself around Roman’s mother. It seemed like he was always saying the wrong things.

He shook is head with a sigh, watching his brother resign back to his slouch, only deeper and more disappointed looking.

It hurt to see.

He pressed his lips together, adjusting his expression and shifting back in his own chair, gaze idling back on the news.

“I’m still trying to figure shit out, you know.”

He gave a sharp huff and stared right through the headlines. Gone was the sunshine from his golden eyes. There was pain and nearly too much regret to deal with. Guilt drowned his soul and threatened to break the dam.

There wasn’t really a good answer for Cian. His question stung, but maybe it was fair. Even in his absence—especially so— had been his creation. Everything that happened was his fault. He couldn’t find any other way to look at it.

After a long moment, he broke.

“Probably forever. You're right. I don't know what the fuck I'm doin'.”

He shook his head, face wrinkled in hurt a bit as he leaned back further into the chair, which gave a small bounce and creak.

Maybe he didn't quite think the words through before he said them:

“At least I'm not a criminal anymore.”

Why’d he say that? He hadn’t meant what it implied. His eyes closed in instant regret as Cian rose from the couch. He didn’t move to stop him.

“Fuck,” he muttered under his breath.

The opening of the door was heard, but it didn’t immediately register that he didn’t hear it close afterwards.

Then, several moments too late, it did.

“Fuck!”

He sprang from his chair, running to the door in time to see the fossil scurrying across a neighbor’s yard and darting down a street. There was only a brief, frivolous glance around for his brother before he began running in the Kabuto’s direction, hopping the fence and attempting to catch up as best he could.

Unfortunately, it was gone for now.
