The wait was over. The youth stood up from his seat and stretched as his name came up on the screen within the battle tent's waiting room.

An image of his opponent flashed over the screen opposite to his own, giving him pause as he picked through his many pokeballs.

If there was one thing he had to give Hoenn, is that it had all of the hot people.

Like ALL of them. Just all swirling together in the big melting pot that was the beaches; Doug had traveled both Kanto and Johto fully before coming to Hoenn and not met half as many pretty people as he had within the first month of coming to Hoenn, it was wild.

"Good thing this ain't a pageant; I would've been disqualified just for the match up." The youth cracked wryly as he scratched under his hat, before shaking his head and moving towards the battlefield.

The sun shone down brightly upon him as he stepped outside and took stock of the battlefield.

A massive, deep pool stretched out between him and his opponent as the large screen at the very center of the stadium flashed with their faces and names, three pokeballs orbiting around each.

Turning his gaze towards his opponent, the youth suckled in a breath.

He was no expert at reading people, but the woman before him had an air about her that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end.

The air... of competence. It was a fearsome thing, as it seemed like it could only be found amongst a select few within Hoenn's borders. And the few it was found in, well...

He immediately chose to play it safe.

"Yer up, guys!" The youth said as he swung three netballs into the field, releasing three white flashes unto the water. Large splashes rose in the air as the pokemon sunk to the depths, the three mugshots of a Kabutops, Golisopod and Armaldo revealing themselves on the screen.

"Pleasure to battle ya! Let's have a spectacle of a match, eh?"

Her name is called and she wastes no time in approaching the battle arena. This one is different than the rest. For the most part, all of her battles have been typical battle formating. Some of them she'd heard had been more arcade-based or creative, steering away from traditional battling.[break][break]

This one appeared to be traditional as well other than the fact it was set in a pool. [break][break]

With three individual splashes, Emma does her best to calculate the size of each Pokemon. Thankfully, the announcer describes each Pokemon by name for the crowd. Kabutops. Golisopod. Armaldo.[break][break]

Fossil Pokemon, primarily. Nothing she hadn't seen before, given her ex-fiance's passion for the beasts.[break][break]

"A spectacle indeed. Good luck."[break][break]

But it would more likely be herself that needed the luck. Although she was hardly invested in this tournament to score wins, she had come to this one sorely underpowered. The woman releases her own three Pokemon: an Araquanid, a Surskit, and a Sobble. Given her lack of clear action, Doug is free to begin.

Araquanid and Surskit were pokemon he was rather familiar with- obviously. Araquanid was a favorite, specially his own; he couldn't help but wave at the spider with a grin, following suit to the Surskit and the Sobble as well.

His wave then swiftly turned into a theatrical sweep of the arm, his other coming up as he gave his orders.

"This is what y'all been training for- let's get to it, everyone!" The youth instructed.

The three pokemon nodded at one another immediately after, the Samurai extending out a blade of water towards the living bug-type fossil.

As the Armaldo turned around and let the blade puncture into its chitinous plate, the Kabutops launched back and pressed to the wall...

And the two bug types began to spin in tandem.

Kira's blade spun wildly as she swung it in their opponent's direction, increasing the speed of the Armaldo's own spinning to an extreme degree.

The water around the pool swirled around the two as they forcefully commanded the current, a sweeping vortex stretching out towards the opponents, seeking to entrap them!

The Kabutops launched forth then, pushing off the wall before punching into the vortex at high speed, flying through the center towards the enemy in a blur of motion.

"Lovely pokemon ya got there!" Suddenly spoke Doug to his opponent. "Bug-type specialist, per chance?"

Bit of a stretch, given that not all of them were bugs, but there were plenty of choices for water types out there- it made him curious.

After all, the Unofficial Bugcatcher's Association could always use more members.

-Golisopod used Drill Run!
-Armaldo used Rapid Spin!
-Kabutops is swimming uber fast with its Swift Swim and attacking with Aqua Jet!

All three of them are incredibly fast- which is to be expected. Once upon a time, two of the three were apex predators. Golisopod was and continued to be a predator as well. [break][break]

Before the hits all land, Araquanid steps into the way in an attempt to protect the Sobble in the back. Quick as a whip, a barrier of REFLECT is thrown up, prepared to lessen the damage incoming. [break][break]

RAIN DANCE is meekly performed by a shy little Sobble in the back as it tucks itself under the legs of the gigantic water-spider. [break][break]

And as each Pokemon crashes into the reflective barrier to strike at them, Sobble would be the last one hit. Araquanid takes the brunt of it all, acting as the larger, tougher protector. DRILL RUN and the AQUA JET specifically are slowed by the REFLECT. It is the RAPID SPIN that catches them all off-guard. It strikes SURSKIT, prompting the little spider to spin out of control deeper into the pool, separating it.[break][break]

Sobble remains virtually unharmed, for now.[break][break]

And Surskit, recovering with its RAIN DISH, proceeds to AQUA JET back into the fray, planning to barrel straight through them all in similar fashion the opponent had done, previously.

The reflect barrier wards away the vortex and parries aside good damage from Kabutops' Aqua Jet, the fossil twisting around before slamming into the other end of the pool feet first, cracks spreading over the surface as it narrowed its eyes up at its opponents.

The Golisopod for its part turned its gaze sharply to the Sobble the Araquanid was covering for, believing to have found a weak-link in the three-mon team before locking gazes with the glaring Kabutops, and nodding.

Raising both of its scythes, the living fossil brought them crashing upon the pool's wall, spiderweb cracks spreading all over the surface as they stabbed in- cracks that quickly became large, gaping fissures as power was surged through the wall.

As if something inside went off, the wall exploded outwards in a mess of rocky projectiles, flying outwards towards everyone on the field.

The Golisopod grasped its watery blade in both hands and cut through all incoming rocks while wading forward through the water, inching slowly towards the Sobble while using the larger rocks as both cover and distraction.

Meanwhile, the one pokemon who's attack had been succesful, Armaldo, turned its gaze towards the Surskit, who had been separated from its allies. Seeing it attempt to get quickly back into the fray, the Armaldo threw itself in the way without thought, the crash sending it reeling back as it attempted to parry aside the force of the blow with gleaming claws and body armor.

Now that they were separate, do not let them regroup...!

-Kabutops used Stone Edge!
-Golisopod is using Razor Shell!
-Armaldo used Metal Claw to try and parry! It took damage!

The arena rumbles with effort, rocks exploding outward. They shoot like torpedos and it takes effort to not get slashed apart by them. Araquanid's REFLECT still holds, managing to keep some of the damage at bay. But it is not enough and never could be, and neither she nor Sobble are fully prepared for the STONE EDGE in the water.[break][break]

With all of the damage taken, Araquanid is forced to shoot forward, fangs extended to LEECH LIFE on the Kabutops when it nears. Armaldo is locked in combat with Surskit, jostling the tiny spider out of her prior AQUA JET.[break][break]

Should there be a window, Sobble attempts to take it through shimmering tears(albeit hidden given their underwater environment). It sprays water forward, attempting to SOAK the Kabutops before Araquanid can reach it. If it worked, it might aid Araquanid in replenishing more strength.[break][break]

Surskit attempts to fight off the Armaldo with a BUG BITE, latching on and not letting go. For now, none of them appear to notice the Golisopod RAZOR SHELLING his way through the rocks. He is hidden and out of sight, therefore unnoticed.[break][break]

Emma's lips part, and although she is a bit late to respond, she still does.[break][break]

"Spiders, specifically."[break][break]

But not entirely. She did have a Beedrill she was quite fond of.

The Kabutops reeled back its scythe as the Araquanid fast approached, preparing to intercept, the shadows created by the rocks pooling around its arm.

Meanwhile, the Golisopod's target faced away from her in order to assist the arachnid, and that was when the former Hive Queen surged forth at high speed, her claws flashing as she swam towards the Sobble and attempted to bring them across its back, seeking to end its role in the fight then and there.

But regardless of whether it succeeded or failed, the little Sobble's efforts would not be in vain.

The Kabutops was hyper-focused on the fast approaching arachnid; the soak which almost blended in with their surroundings caught it entirely off guard, getting into its eye as it splashed over it. In alarm, it swung its scythe wildly- and prematurely, releasing a wave of ghostly darkness before getting bodily slammed by the Araquanid, its large mandibles digging into the living fossil's carapace and drawing out a pained snarl.

Up with the Armaldo and Surskit, the rock type's body shone, its power spreading to nearby debris from its ally's earlier attack before launching forth the rocks at its opponent!

"Huh, Interesting! That's a first." Doug had met fellow bug catchers before, but never someone sorely focused on a specific type of bug. He was curious. "Any reason?"

-Golisopod used First Impression on Sobble!
-Kabutops became a pure water-type! Kabutops swung wildly with Night Slash! Kabutops was hit by Araquanid's Leech Life!
-Armaldo used RockBlast!

Sobble is the weakest link. It is shy, and weak, and too unwilling to defend itself. She has to wonder why in Arceus' name Bill Anderson gave it to her. It had, even now, been nothing but a disappointment.[break][break]

The moment Araquanid lunges forward to leave Sobble open, the Golisopod appears. Sobble can almost see the Pokemon's red eyes. She seizes, unable to react, and succumbs to her fate.[break][break]

Araquanid has replenished her energy, however, and the continued RAIN DISH effects continue to benefit the Surskit. Yes, she really did prefer spiders.[break][break]

"They're resilient."[break][break]

The NIGHT SLASH is premature and predicatable, and effectively out-manuevered in the process of the LEECH LIFE. Araquanid follows up with SCALD, firing boiling hot water at point blank.[break][break]

Surskit squeals, a high-pitched noise, as the ROCK BLAST threatens to crush her. She bolts with a burst of AGILITY, narrowly avoiding and clipping herself off of the rock particles. She spins out of control, dizzy. BUBBLES form around her mouth and envelop her. If the Armaldo were to approach, it would be damaged!

"Think I like ya, miss." Doug said with a grin, tipping his hat at the woman. Obviously not a complete response, but he would take it.

A shrill, angry shriek left the Kabutops' maw as its opponent released scalding hot water upon it at point blank, severe burns forming over its joints as it attempted to ram its scythes onto the spider and forcefully pry it off.

Its struggle did not go unnoticed, the Golisopod's gaze turning towards it after it finished dispatching the poor Sobble. Once again, the pokemon began a stealthy approach, keen on sneaking up on the enemy while her ally's struggles kept it distracted.

The Armaldo launched forth despite the bubble trap surrounding its opponent, limbs compressing back into its shell before it began to spin wildly once again, its battle armor taking the brunt of the concussive force behind the bubbles as its spinning form cut through them, the distance between itself and the Surskit swiftly growing shorter and shorter!

-Kabutops was burned! Kabutops is trying to pry off Araquanid with Liquidation!
-Golisopod is sneaking up on Araquanid...
-Armaldo used Rapid Spin!

Emma blinks, pulling her attention away from the battle to glance at the kid. She's hardly looked at him the entire time - and frankly that is mostly because her eyesight is still incredibly poor and mending. Trying to focus was pointless, and peering across the highly-reflective pool was pretty close to agonizing.[break][break]

But he's said something that catches her off-guard, and even though her expression is unreadable and her eyes are hidden behind sunglasses, she's moved to some degree. He didn't even know her, and yet he'd unabashedly claimed something so.. simple.[break][break]

People were so strange.[break][break]

Surskit, desperate to protect the Araquanid still clinging to the back of the Kabutops, launches forward on quick spurts of water. Even with the RAPID SPIN hard on her tail, she springs a hasty STICKY WEB to slow down the Golisopod she's spied sneaking up on her partner. The gigantic spider turns in time to see it, praying on the STICKY WEB holding.[break][break]

Regardless, the water spider LUNGES out of the way as best she can, pulling Surskit into her bubble head to protect her from the RAPID SPIN. [break][break]
They sit at a standstill, waiting.

She had turned her gaze away from the pool to look at him for the first time- but hadn't said anything. He hoped he hadn't offended her!

The webbing catches the Golisopod by surprise; she thought she was being sneaky, but ended up sneaked upon herself... The dramatic irony was entirely lost upon her as she snarled and summoned her watery sword, attempting to cut her way out of the sticky trap with furious fervor.

It was not the way it would have preferred, but finally the Kabutops found itself free from the arachnid's grasp, tired, injured and worse for the wear, its body floating wearily and not doing much to attack.

The Armaldo had no intention of stopping, Araquanid or no Araquanid. Its spinning form attempted to barrel straight into the spider, full force.

-Golisopod is trying to cut through the web!
-Kabutops is free! It's very tired.
-Armaldo continues with its rapid spin!

Araquanid and Surskit were together again- and although they did not have Sobble, they had been successful in breaking up the kids trio. They outweighed them, outpowered them, but Emma was correct: they were resilient.[break][break]

And so, while Golisopod is preoccupied and Kabutops floats to the surface, exhausted, it leaves just Armaldo as the prime threat. Surskit pokes its little head out of the Araquanid's bubble, and together they both spray very, very hot streams of SCALD at the approaching RAPID SPINNING Armaldo.[break][break]

It simultaneously pushes them backward with the force.[break][break]
They sit at a standstill, waiting.

Hot water sprays against the rapid spinning Armaldo, grinding away against it as it attempts to plow through on pure power alone. Its caparace sizzles and steams, and ultimately, is repelled back with a pained hiss, its spinning form launched backwards and away from the the duo as they too are pushed back by their own force.

A blur of motion from their side is their first and only alert. The Golisopod appeared, arm reeled back before it swung the hacked up remains of the sticky webbing at the duo and then pointed its arm towards them, releasing a ray of icy cold in an attempt to freeze them to the web!

-Armaldo got rekt by double Scalds! He's awaaay!
-Kabutops is ? ? ?
-Golisopod threw the webs back at the spider duo, before trying to freeze to it with Ice Beam!

At this point, everyone is breathing heavily. No amount of RAIN DISH absorption can heal all of her bruises and battering- and the LEECH LIFE had only done so much. Without a steady supply, Araquanid too was running out of steam.[break][break]

This was their final stand.[break][break]

And now they were.. frozen in place?![break][break]

Emma sucks in a quiet breath on her side of the field as the water grows colder. Beneath the surface, Araquanid and Surskit are covered in the latter's STICKY WEB. It freezes around them, locking them in place. The ice continues to crawl, harming them both.[break][break]

Surskit faints as a result, and Araquanid continues attempting to LUNGE and LUNGE away without avail. She is stuck.
