From where he now stands, she can smell the cigarette smoke that he exhales.[break][break]

He begins to speak and she begins to shake her head. Though she doesn't interrupt him, she doesn't agree. It felt like a confession, even if it wasn't romantic. It felt like a plea, like if she were to take that step toward him she'd walk into the deep end and drown.[break][break]

Her idle head-shake comes to a halt, a rough hand catching her chin. The instinct is to recoil, but for some reason, she doesn't. She waits, focused on what he's saying, wondering what it is he's trying to communicate.[break][break]

Because she can't see him smile, and through his thick accent its hard to tell if he's amused or annoyed. She isn't trapped by any means, but she can't pull away, either.[break][break]

And then his lips press against hers, guiding her into a kiss. It is hungry instead of hesitant, sinking claws in, holding fast.[break][break]

She kisses him back.
