The blow of a whistle rips cleanly through the skies along with a hoop tossed up high towards fluffy white clouds; signifying the start of the Pokeringer match.

It seemed that the HST committee was keen to try and breathe new life into old, nearly lost competitions. And with it being a flying specialised game, there was only one person Angelo would want to compete against… [break][break]

From one corner, Tiaki launches herself towards the ring that was thrown into middle ground. The Altaria sailing smoothly through the air with the soft, charging glow of a SKY ATTACK coating over her cotton body. Surging towards the single hoop to try and outpace her opponent. [break][break]

Fingertips, calloused and steady, grip hold of the edge of the wicker basket. Leaning enough over the edge of the hot air balloon to feel the salty breeze caress his skin like a lover’s touch – a gentle one. [break][break]

“Bet you missed being up this high, huh?” Blue eyes peer back towards the other man, crinkled at the corners in a genuine surge of fond companionship and the loosening of any tension. The sky had that kind of effect, breaking weight and tethers. [break][break]

It had been some time since Angelo had last seen Alexei Ivanov ; they’d both needed time to heal wounds, as of late. A lot had happened that had kept Angelo away from Fortree… [break][break]

“Doubt the nurses are going to find you here.” His grin is a little sharper then, as if taking delight – pride – in the Gym Leader’s act of rebellion.

Meanwhile, not too far behind the Altaria was a Xatu. One whose stare equally unnerved and made Alexei curious as to what the avian was thinking.

Not even needing to flap his wings, the Xatu then cut ahead before flashing a bright light in the Altaria’s path, an attempt at using Confuse Ray in order to disorient the Altaria and snatch the ring back for himself to take to his side of the goal.

“They told me I can’t fly. Yeah right, joke’s on them, they forgot what theme I have for my Gym,” he began with a cackle, making sure not to put too much pressure on his right leg. It was still fucked up, after all.

Remembering that he’d brought along something, he then reached down for a moment before resurfacing with a plastic container that had red velvet macarons.

“Been working on my macaron game lately. Want one?” he offered as he cracked the lid open.

Angelo lets out a laugh at the smugness that rolls of Alexei, reaching out to clasp a hand over the other’s shoulder in comradery. “Y’know what they say, birds of a feather,” he utters, grinning. He’d escaped the Sotally Tober numerous times during his own recovery period, regardless of burns pulled taut. [break][break]

“You really need to ask?” Reaching over, Angelo picks one of the macarons from the tub Alexei brandishes and pops one whole in his mouth. Red Velvet, he notices. The Gym Leader could always be relied on to bring the goods, he’d missed sneaking cookies from the Sanctuary… Missed the Sanctuary in general over the last few months, actually. [break][break]

“-hey mfgood.” He says, mouth full before swallowing it down. “So. Really. How're you holding up?”[break][break]

In the skies, hit by the CONFUSE RAY, Tiaki is temporarily confused. Her body aglow in SKY ATTACK pushing her forward at incredible speeds leads her to miss the ring in her dizziness, allowing the Xatu to snatch it in his beak for himself. She lets out a trill and makes chase…

“They’re driving me crazy. Always saying to ‘lay off the heavy activity’ and that ‘you can’t fly until you’re healed’, but idiots, I do better up in the air!” he exclaimed as he grabbed a macaron for himself and downed it in one chomp.

“Sometimes I don’t get why doctors don’t make us do shit we know that works for us…” he added as he grabbed a second one and ate it whole as well.

Over where the Xatu was flying, the ring was free for him to take—and that he did. With a cackle (or at least how a bird can cackle) the dual-type then warped away from the Confused Altaria with a Teleporting gesture—heading in his direction hopefully to score a sneaky goal!

“Well… my right hand’s still fucked up. Ugh. I have to write in chicken shit now,” he added with a sigh as he showed the other his right hand, still bandaged up.

“Thank hell I’m ambidextrous, but still… what about you? Where the hell have you been anyway? You haven’t dropped by in so long!”

Xatu used Teleport to gain some distance towards his goal!

A soft snort. “Think it’s called a degree. Kind of lets them call the shots. Try to, anyway.”[break][break]

Not like that stopped either of them from doing what they wanted, by the sounds of it. [break][break]

“You’ll get there. Least you can still bake,” it’s a reassuring comment so much as it is a light joke. Angelo’s sure that not only his fellow flying expert appreciates his ability to continue baking. He puts another macaron in his mouth. [break][break]

Arms folded, Angelo leans against the edge of the balloon basket, peering out towards their birds as they do battle in the air. A lazy, peaceful smile falters as Alexei draws attention to his absence from the Sanctuary.[break][break]

Something guilty settles in the pit of his stomach; as small as it was, smoothed by excitement, it still didn’t change the fact that change could be bittersweet. [break][break]

“Yeah, man. I wanted to come by sooner but it took a while to recover from those League missions the other month,” there’s a slight bitter edge to his tongue, sweetened only by red velvet. “And then I got busy. Kinda lost track of the time.” [break][break]

As the Xatu TELEPORTS away, Tiaki takes aim when it reappears… Her focus from the confusion clearing as she fires an ICE BEAM towards her opponent, aiming to FREEZE and stop its advance towards the goal.

“You got swept up in those ‘missions’ too, huh,” he remarked as he lazily plucked another macaron and took a bite out of it, this time leaving half of it while he chewed on it rather than just eating them whole like a gremlin.

“I got tangled in one too—the Secret Base guild’s headquarters was fucking set on fire. The paperwork was a mess,” he continued with a sigh as he ate the remaining half of the macaron.

The Xatu reappeared some distance ahead—however the drop in temperature alerted him to the change—and out of alarm, he fired off a burst of rainbow, Psychic energy as some kind of a bubble shield—however it also gave way and exploded as the Ice Beam attack hit it, causing him to drop the ring he was holding in his hooked beak out of surprise.

“And then… this happened. Got attacked in my own city. Yeesh,” he said, waving his left hand around as if to shoo something away.

Xatu used Psychic to counter the Ice Beam attack in a defensive formation; shattering due to surprise. And Xatu drops the ring.

Although she fails to freeze the Xatu, she does manage to dislodge its beak from the ring. Swiftly, Tiaki lunges, wings folded as she plummets through the skies after the hoop of metal; catching up to snatch it out of the air. As soon as it’s secured the Altaria beats her strong cloud wings, ascending back up into the skies as a HAZE begins to spread; shielding the direction in which she takes to reach the goal.[break][break]

“I heard a little about that… Was the Sanctuary okay?” Another prickle of guilt. He’d meant to check up on them all but the mission to Mt Pyre had got in the way, along with the consequences of said mission… [break][break]

“Though I’m sure Claire would’ve given them a run for their money if anyone’d tried. I wouldn’t want to mess with her.” Angelo grins wryly, thinking of the receptionist… [break][break]

“Anyway, Alex… Speaking of Fortree. I gotta tell you something.”

“Thankfully, both Claire and Ethan were there to help, so no harm befell the Sanctuary,” he said with a chuckle as he plucked another macaron.

“You know how Claire gets when she’s angry. Nobody wants to get in her way,” he added with a laugh as he downed this unfortunate macaron, joining its other brethren.

The Xatu had dropped the ring—however now the Altaria was trying to make a getaway! Squawking angrily, the dual-type then began to charge up a powerful Sky Attack in order to obliterate the building cloud that was trying to obscure the Altaria’s getaway.

The next sentence made him stop and blink at Angelo’s direction for a few moments.

“Hm? What is it?”

endeavor completed: use a move that requires charging / recharging (Sky Attack)!

“Remember that time I spilt coffee over her desk? Thought she’d stuff me like a Torchic at Christmas.” A not entirely unpleasant shudder goes down Angelo’s spine at the memory of the receptionist swearing a curse to him and his lineage for all time; in how she'd shook him by his collar. [break][break]

He props his chin on his elbow, laughing softly as the tethered balloon gently sways; lulling and peaceful up in the big wide blue. The chuckle dies on a sigh, Angelo wetting his lips as his gaze transfixes on their battling pokemon but not quite focusing on them.[break][break]

“I’ve got a new job. Well. Going self-employed, actually. Time’s going to be hard to come by once the tournament is over…” A pause, before he pushes himself back up to stand up straight, the wicker creaking as his weight shifts from leaning against the basket. “So, I won’t be able to help around the place like I used to, anymore…” [break][break]

He looks over towards Alex, more words sitting on the tip of his tongue that need to be said. [break][break]

Within her cloud, Altaria begins to charge up her SKY ATTACK, too…

“This is why you never get Claire angry, it’s an unspoken rule at the Sanctuary,” he said with a chuckle as he plucked one more macaron and stuffed it into his mouth.

Down below, the Xatu then caught sight of the Altaria and aimed his Sky Attack at the fluffy cloud; aiming to knock the other off-course—and catch the ring from its grasp!

Eventually, he looked up at Angelo.

“What—what job are you moving to?” he inquired, curious.

Xatu used Sky Attack! (Sky Attack has a chance to cause flinch!

“Piloting, actually… Freelance.” His gaze latches onto Alex’s, pride and excitement shimmering, reflecting clouds in blue that they both loved so. If anyone would understand Angelo’s insatiable desire for the unending horizon and where the air lies thin – and unpredictable – then it would be him. “Starting from scratch. Odd jobs and the like. So, I’ll have to spend my time building that up before anything else.” [break][break]

A pause, his gaze shifting away as he plucks one of Alex’s baked goodies. Turning it over in calloused fingers. “’m not the best at this stuff but…” Unable to resist, Angelo’s lips curl. “Thanks. For taking me under your wing. You're a good friend, Alex.” It goes unsaid that the Gym Leader had helped Angelo grow to where he was now. That they were crossing over from volunteer-mentor, to a friendship forged through similiar loves.[break][break]

In the skies, Altaria FLINCHES, her attack disappearing in a fizzle of silver as the ring she’d plucked falls…

“Are you going to fly into space?” he blinked, grabbing another macaron and cramming it into his mouth.

After he was done chewing, he continued, “You know—if you don’t show up after a while, you’re going to have a lot of explaining to do to Claire, and Ethan,” he laughed.

Down where the Pokémon were competing midair, the Xatu saw the falling ring and quickly moved in, attempting to Teleport closer to the ring and trying to catch the ring and make a beeline for his goal!

Xatu used Teleport to get closer to the falling ring and abscond towards the goal post!

A laugh rips from Angelo’s throat, hard enough that he drops the macaron and it plummets down to earth. [break][break]

“Let me get the airplane licence first, man. I’ll worry about the astronaut training later.” He grins, playing along. Angelo had always wanted to brush his fingertips through stardust. Maybe one day the clouds will seem too low down but for now, his sights are set purely on a craft that didn’t need rocket fuel. [break][break]

“You know I’ll still visit. Don’t need Claire or Ethan hunting me down…” He’s pretty sure the former would be able to catch him, even with wings beneath him. [break][break]

Recovering from her flinch, Tiaki flaps her wings hard to keep herself suspended, looking this way and that to find the Xatu. When she finally spots him, the Altaria gives chase, aiming a freezing ICE BEAM one more time at his retreating form…

“Aww, you dropped a macaron,” he said, noticing one of the red brethren make a bid for freedom over the side of the basket. “At least there’s still a few more left…”

He then offered the rest of the contents of the plastic box to Angelo.

“Wait, wait—where’d you get the plane? If you already have one?” he asked, curious.

Down where the Xatu was cackling softly as he held the ring in his mouth, he didn’t realize that it would be the last cackle he would have for a good while—as the Xatu’s wings suddenly grew colder, it let out a cry of surprise and dropped the ring—and the sharp noise caught Alexei’s attention.

“Whoa,” he remarked as he saw the Xatu suddenly plummeting to earth in a block of ice. Fumbling for the Xatu’s containment unit, he then recalled the avian before it crash-landed on the ground (and injured himself further).

Xatu was frozen!
