Cardamom had been battling a lot during this tournament, but apparently there were options for less traditional challenges as well. Which was why Nibs and Biff had been called out for this battle, along with Shin as their third. Cardamom grinned down at his team as he explained the rules.[break][break]
"So this is going to be a relay race," he said, pointing out the racetrack that had been sketched out for them. "You're going to be first, Shin, then Biff, and finally Nibs for the final burst of speed. No attacking your opponent, and you have to pass the baton directly to your followup." He gave Shin a serious look at that, and the Teddiursa simply blinked innocently. As his Pokemon moved to take their places, Cardamom stood and looked into the distance, waiting for their opponent to arrive.

[break][break] "freek, mora, link." the three pokemon are released in a flash of light, looking up at their trainer obediently. they are ready for instructions. he gestures to each of them in turn. "first, second, third. careful of the baton — it may be slippery."

[break][break] complete your task by any means necessary is a thought that goes unspoken — it is not needed. much like jayden, they are adequately trained. the boy turns to the other. "hello. my name is michail," he greets, offering his hand out politely for a shake.

[break][break] freek is the first up to bat. he grabs the baton in his teeth and runs forward on the track with quick attack.

Cardamom watched as the opponent's three Pokemon appeared, taking the offered hand and shaking. "I'm Cardamom!" he said. "I haven't done this kind of challenge before, but your team looks pretty ready for it." They'd barely needed any additional orders, after all.[break][break]
Shin took off after the Thievul, running as fast as he could on his stubby little legs. With the clause against direct attacks, he sighed and put on his cute teddy bear face, batting his eyes in an attempt to Charm his opponent into stumbling.

"could say the same for you." his gaze drifts to the three pokemon that Cardamom Bliss had chosen. the pokemon appear to be younger than jayden's own, but the rocket knows from personal experience not to make judgements without proper evidence.

[break][break] their opponent's charm catches the thievul off-guard, causing him to drop the baton. he blinks with surprise, allowing the other pokemon to get the advantage. growling with annoyance, the thievul grabs the baton once more and then leaps down the path, trying to make up for the slight fumble.

Shin let out a bearish chuckle, actually slowing down for a moment to spin around and pull down an eyelid at his stumbling opponent, sticking out his tongue playfully before turning around and going back to the race. Cardamom let out an embarrassed groan at seeing that, but at least the bear didn't seem interested in further taunting for now, instead focusing on getting ahead as fast as he could. Biff's mandibles were clacking together as he waited at the second position, one claw already extended in preparation to grab the baton from Shin.

oh, jayden thinks. he shouldn't have done that.

[break][break] but jayden is not the type of trainer to intervene. he just knows that his thievul is not the most good-tempered -- a fact that proves to be true as the pokemon barks in anger at the other's mocking, gritting his teeth fierce around the baton. it drops at his feet and he jumped into the air, slashing his claws forward with night slash. the air splits with dark energy, causing spirals of light to be sent in the other's direction.

[break][break] the thievul picks up the baton after that, making a greed descent down the path towards the next pokemon in line -- the riolu, who has an arm outstretched.

[break][break] turning to cardamom, jayden asks. "how are you feeling about the tournament?"

Apparently, Shin hadn't considered that his actions might have this sort of consequence. As the Dark-type energy raced towards the running bear, he turned as well, one claw gripping his baton tightly, the other raised to deliver his own Slash that cut through most of the shadowy energy that was directly aimed at him. Some of it still sliced past, mussing up his fur, but he huffed and chose to keep running towards the impatient-looking Biff instead of furthering this grudge-for now.[break][break]
The Paras' claw was outstretched as far as it could go, and the instant the baton touched down his claw clamped down around it and he started scuttling as fast as he could. With no techniques that could make him go faster, his best bet was to simply try to get as big a lead as he could.[break][break]
Cardamom started a bit at the question. "Oh..." he said, "it's actually been pretty fun! My family just came here to set up a food stall, but I thought the tournament sounded like a nice way to give my team a bit of a workout."

"food?" jayden echoes, canting his head to the side. he thinks of the various food stalls that he had passed throughout the days of the event, and wondered if he'd ever come across any of them. "what kinds of things do they sell?"

[break][break] meanwhile, link grabs the baton from the thievul and takes off. freek bares his teeth at his competitor from before, barking at the other pokemon, but link could hardly care as he focuses on his descent down the path.

[break][break] in front of them both, there are several mini vaults — they're all adequately pokemon sized — that prove as obstacles for the pokemon who need to cross them. arms flaring out behind him, the riolu holds the baton with one hand and with the other hand smashes through the various obstacles with rock smash.

"Oh...mostly baked and fried food," said Cardamom. "The kind that you can prep super-fast right after someone orders, though we also have some premade snacks. And of course we've got treats for Pokemon and humans both! We're under the name Bliss, you can't miss it."[break][break]
As the two talked about food stalls, Biff was faced with several obstacles as well. He raised the claw that wasn't holding a baton, slashing it swiftly back and forth to break down the obstacles with an X-Scissor attack. Despite being one-clawed, so far he was managing to keep up with his opponent on that front.

jayden hums under his breath, thoughtful.

[break][break] "is there any in particular that's your favorite?" ever since the ice cream that he had shared with Chu-e Choi, he'd been looking to expand his food palette. the tropical drinks that he'd shared with siobhan burke had been good too.

[break][break] his eyes flicker to his riolu running along the path. "link!" his voice is sharp. "don't cause too much damage." his eyes flicker towards the referree, who seems at least to be preoccupied with something else. two women stand by him, bickering, and it's clear that the man needs to solve a dispute.

[break][break] grumbling, the riolu concedes. it's so much more work — but he'll listen. he uses quick attack to give himself speed and instead of breaking the hurdles, he leaps over the last few.

"Oh come on, that's like asking my parents who their favorite kid is!" objected Cardamom. "Though...if you don't mind mess, I'd definitely suggest the crepes! The crepe part is always freshly made and they come with a lot of cream and berries!"[break][break]
Even as he extolled the virtues of this particular treat, Biff was finding himself falling behind. Plus, his claws were getting a little sore from all the attacks he was doing. Indeed, it looked very much like Link was going to take the lead on this middle leg, despite Nibs waiting anxiously as the Paras did his best to scuttle over the various hurdles in the way.

it's a brief thought, but it occurs to him.

[break][break] he is pretty sure that his parents would have a favorite. and more than that, he is sure that it wouldn't be him.

[breka][break] however, the moment passes, and jayden finds himself tilting his head to the side as the other speaks. "i don't think i've ever had crepes before," he pauses. it sounded sweet — perhaps too sweet? he wondered briefly if Chu-e Choi would enjoy them. "but they sound good enough to try. are there different types?" perhaps maybe a savory option.

[break][break] link is eager to get to the end — perhaps a little too much. his foot catches on one of the hurdles, slapping his jaw against the ground. he winces, giving his competitor a precious few moments to gain on him. the riolu gets up as fast as he can and fumbles a bit as he hands over the baton to the murkrow, who tries to take the baton as soon as she can.

Even with his opponent stumbling, that still put Biff slightly behind, leaving a very impatient Nibs to quickly grab the baton in her own jaws, using Bug Bite to hang on tight to it as she went scuttling along down the final leg, trying her best to catch up with the flyer.

it's an easy win — or so mora thinks.

[break][break] as soon as she grabs the baton, she's able to use her tailwind to propel herself forward, making her speed down the path with ease. that is, however, until there is an upcurrent of a draft that causes her to go spiraling into a nearby tree as she loses control. the bird squawks with surprise and tries to revert her path, but it is almost too late.

[break][break] her opponent, while small, has made significant gains.

[break][break] "savory recipe?" jayden tilts his head to the side. "what do you mean?"
