ever since their monumental encounter in the hot springs all those years ago, a bond had developed between the two avatars over the years, only growing stronger with time. jayden, who was always eager to invest in the recruitment and inevitable success in their grunts, had poured his blood and sweat into making mint frost the force he was today — into NEON. a blood-thirsty beast, powerful enough to wreak havoc in rocket's mantle, should the need ever arise.

[break][break] but today, this wasn't NEON.

[break][break] the beast's uniform, painstakingly handcrafted and digitized into perfection by fern delaney, was nowhere to be found.

[break][break] no, this was mint frost — the streamer, publicity figure, and internet celebrity that he'd found on that ranch, all those years ago.

[break][break] although, even jayden had to admit. he could tell the developments in the other man's form from the way that he sprinted across the DARK terrain — lithe and speedy, built more for quickness than durability. but speed wouldn't save him.

[break][break] raising both arms, several ICY BLADES cut through the sky towards the fleeing beast.

[break][break] "YOU'VE TRESPASSED," his RUINOUS voice thundered through the forest, as the wind picked up around them, howling with terrifying intensity. the very air seemed alive with the power of ANCIENT SPIRITS, their presence rippling in unseen waves, as the earth beneath them groaned, shuddering as ghostly images flickered into view right before mint frost's eyes.

It had felt like ages since he and Aurelie Lefevre spent time together. With the completion of the shield and saddle, and much of the rigmarole of transitioning Sootopolis from a rubble of ruins into a half-functioning city filled with traitors, there was much work to be done.

[break][break] not yet noticing calyrex, chien pao's form was a spectral blur in the dim light, its sinuous body weaving between the fractured pillars. the air grew colder as it moved, frost forming in delicate patterns along the edges of the room.

[break][break] jayden edged against the wall, scarred hand brushing over foreign carvings.

[break][break] "if they've left it behind, then the treasure no longer belongs to them. it's as good as ours."

[break][break] even though it was likely they hadn't left it willingly. DEATH had a way of claiming what it wanted without remorse for the living.

words brought no clarity, and jayden was forced to continue to stare at his best friend in confusion.

[break][break] the admin made a sweeping motion with his hand, drawing ice that had settled on the forest floor back into his palm in a fluid arc. the shards slid like glass daggers, their sharp edges catching the light and reflecting the admin's face — eyes that mirrored in the icy surfaces, cold and unblinking. he waited until both his own porygon and the other's rotom were prepared to capture video and then — it happened. color drained from his already pale face, his eyes narrowed into razor-thin slits and a feeling of emptiness swallowed his irises, replaced only by an ever-growing hollow void.

Jayden was not well-known for losing his cool. (No pun intended.) In fact, it was nearly the opposite. Terrifying as he might have been, serious as he might have been, he had always known to exercise tolerance among the grunts — at least, as far as he would think of it.

all of it is so confusing.

[break][break] jayden doesn't get it — he doesn't understand where all these concerns are coming from. while jayden cross for sure is not a perfect person, he knows that he cares deeply for fern delaney. he always has. even before he'd been unable to put those those feelings into words, even when FEAR had kept him from saying them outloud — all too afraid that he didn't deserve all the love and affection that they were willing to afford him.

[break][break] and although they are in the safety and quiet of their sootopolis home, it feels as if they are in just as perilous a place as that poisonous prison cell, as if they are standing - once again - on the precipice of the border's cliffs — ready for the ground to crumble beneath them.

[break][break] in that desperation, the rocket admin reaches for the diamond treasure in his pocket that he'd been carrying around for weeks. a weight that he hadn't been able to let go of.

[break][break] (it wasn't because he hadn't wanted to ask, it was because he'd never been able to find the right time.)

[break][break] jayden drops to his knees, panic pounding in his chest like the frantic flutter of a butterfree's wings.

[break][break] 'what is he doing?' what kind of question is that? shouldn't this be obvious?

[break][break] just like his love for them?

[break][break] "i love you," jayden says plainly. his pained blue eyes locked onto theirs, vast and relentless, like ocean waves crashing endlessly upon jagged cliffs. "and i want you to know how much i love you."

[break][break] "will you marry me, vorobushek?"

[break][break] his throat tightens as he awaits their answer, the silence both sharp and suffocating — like the phantom ache of that cell, of his entire life, as it balances preciously on this fragile moment. memories rise unbidden: blood and thorns in his throat, pain lodged deep as it was when he'd been forced to laugh at their expense, forced to bleed.
