Bo had been finishing out the battles he’d promised and signed up for. Roman Maher had gone missing, and he took the quick excursions back to the beach as opportunities to scour for him, and toss a few suspicious looks occasionally. He was becoming increasingly worried.

For this reason, his focus was not all there this time. But, perhaps he would make up for it with the team he’d brought.

Slow and steady.

That was how he was going.

While he still needed the crutch to get around, he could put some pressure on his right leg for a few hours before needing to lean on the thing again, and so here he was—this time followed by two of his best.

One behind him, and another in the air.

“Sorry I’m late! Still having some problems walking. I’m doing fine myself. Are you Boruta?”

“Hey, no problem! Yeah, that’s me. Or you can call me Bo—whichever.”

Beside him was the giant that was Golurk, eyes aglow as it awaited orders. Then, Cradily, hunkered to the ground even in the sand with its SUCTION CUPS, head and tentacles bobbing around contentedly in the beachy breeze.

“This’ll be our third battle with a gym leader this tournament. Hopefully we can do as well against you guys as we did against Silph!” He flashed a slightly sideways grin. The loss to Zac Ramsay had been disappointing, but there would definitely be another challenge there in the near future. He wouldn’t settle for that outcome.

“Well, Bo is definitely better,” he agreed with a chuckle. “I’m so sorry if you get the ‘your name sounds like a manga character’ analogy a lot,” he added a few moments later.

Since the two were waiting to get started, he then decided to take the first move.

“Vince, let’s go bowling for some plants,” he began once the whistle went off. The Salamence remained hovering above, waiting as the Lucario threw an Aura Sphere at the Cradily.

A few moments later he also went on the move, summoning a Rock Slide aimed at the Golurk.

taking out one at a time was their kind of strategy.

the rock slide made contact, but golurk kept to commands, firing off a focus punch at lucario. meanwhile, cradily seemed bounce back from the aura sphere and used acid on lucario as well, hoping to poison it.

The thing about his two companions was the fact that—

They were among some of his best. Hilarious, considering he was the Flying-themed expert around these parts yet he was also packing a Lucario.

“Vince. You know what to do,” he remarked; adapting a strategy a friend of his had taught him.

Seeing the incoming Focus Punch, the Lucario then bent to take it—before suddenly throwing his paws out in a Countering gesture!

This left him open for the Acid hit, though—while it didn’t poison, it was definitely an annoyance.

“Focus!”

Up above, the Salamence then threw its hideous moue of a Scary Face across the field.

the two were slowed by the scary face, but no matter. they would attack from afar—after golurk recovered from that hard counter. ow!

taking advantage of the close proximity, it went in with another fighting move: hammer arm. cradily used brine, vomiting up gross water towards the jackal in another doubled up assault.

Moving like that kid from those karate movies his human companion liked to watch, he knew he couldn’t pull off the maneuver a second time so soon—so he takes the Hammer Arm hit before skidding across the sand and getting up again.

This time, though, he was ready—coming in with a Meteor Mash punch aimed at the Golurk because holy shit, were they ganging up on him?!

Two on one—what were the odds?

Cringing at the water that washed over him, the Lucario soldiered on.

The Salamence remained in mid-air, though—but not for very long as he came screaming down on the Cradily with a Dragon Claw attack.

meteor mash struck the giant hard, causing it to stumble back. instead of attacking this time, he used iron defense, already having taken on too much damage. cradily was hit by the dragon claw, nearly toppling if not for its suction cups. though hurt, it launched its ancient power in the form of flying rocks at the salamence in retaliation.

The Lucario’s brows furrowed into a frown as he recognized the familiar sheen of Iron Defense—having trained against several of the other Pokémon under Alexei’s care who tended to spam that move a little too much.

Regardless, the Lucario saw that the Salamence was about to get hit by the Ancient Power and used Extreme Speed to move in, taking the hit for the draconid.

Skidding backward, the Salamence then took a deep breath and aimed another wide-spread Rock Slide on the other side of the arena; attempting to strike both Pokémon.

“You’re doing great, Vince!” Alexei called out where he stood, leaning on the crutch as the Lucario fell to one knee—but was determined to see this through to the end!

ROCK SLIDE tumbled across their arena, threatening everyone in its path. Golurk was quick to go into its PHANTOM FORCE, disappearing momentarily into another unearthly plane where it barely visible. The rocks simply passed through it. The Cradily, on the other hand, was not so lucky…

The rocks battered it hard, and it looked like it might’ve been near its end, drooping sadly, its tentacles nearly scraping the sand.

“Cradily, hang in there! ACID!”

If the fossil-type couldn’t stay in the fight much longer, maybe they’d be able to POISON a foe or both at least before fainting.

Oh, so close!

That was definitely a risky move right there.

“Vince, you okay?!” he exclaimed, worried as the Lucario’s legs were shaking when the jackal Pokémon stood up, trembling slightly.

Getting a howling noise in response, the Lucario was met in the face again with the Acid attack—however, due to him being part-Steel, it would only annoy him before he fired off an Aura Sphere at the Cradily’s direction.

For the Salamence, however, things weren’t looking so hot—where was the Golurk?! Tiny beady eyes looked around wildly before coming in close with a Dragon Claw on the Cradily and getting hit by the Acid as he drew closer.

Maybe they could tip this one over—!

DRAGON CLAW came in back against the Cradily, cutting across its chest and finally uprooting it from the ground as it fell over, FAINTED.

Bo gritted his teeth a bit, but still smiling, eager to still prove himself to the gym leader across from him. He held up a pokeball up and returned the fossil-type.

They weren’t out of this yet.

Golurk appeared again, next to the Salamence, its PHANTOM FORCE attempting to grip the dragon and rattle it with ghostly power.

A small victory, however—

The sudden reappearance of the Golurk behind the Salamence meant that the Lucario was too far away to take the hit.

Therefore, the Salamence got the full force of the attack. Roaring angrily, the draconid then opened fire with another close-range Dragon Claw while the Lucario made a mad dash towards the Golurk, a desperate attempt at Meteor Mash being readied to slam into the Golurk’s leg (the closest part of the massive Pokémon he could reach).
