He'd done dumber things for money, being the most fit among his friends. Fallen through folding tables. Sat on faulty chairs. Lifted a car for repairs without a jack. So when an offer came to rest on a deserted island for a week for a reward, he jumped at the chance. Seemed like little more than a chance to frolic in the sun, then hitch a boat ride back to Petalburg from Route 105.

The boat left with the roar of the engine, muffled by the sound having to leave the water to reach them. Enes, seemingly, already had a good setup on the beach. He wore a cheap white tee and black joggers, with matching slide-style sandals. He looked back, watching the other person make their way onto the beach proper.

"Hey, man. Are you good?"

It was too late to run, but he had to take the temperature of the group anyways. A number of pokeballs sat in his pocket, zipped up. One of them rustled, as if the creature inside was waking from a nap. He obliged, letting out a short, fat cactus. "If he's being too much, you let me know, okay?"

The little man waddled towards Eliora, but stopped short of actually jumping on her. From the scars on his face, she'd be able to see his... patient training paid off. The cacnea wiggled its little hands as a greeting.

“Yup! Fine, thanks.”

She stopped onto the beach, noting how much lighter the sand was as compared to the city’s beach. Islands such as this one in Hoenn were beautiful.

Her Slowbro had been allowed to slowly clamber off the boat ahead of her, having been out of his ball the whole time. He stared at the Cacnea, raising a paw and waving slowly. ‘Bro…’

Eliora assessed it too. So many scars, to match its trainer. It reminded of her @darren . Similarly to that situation, she opted not to mention it.

“Oh, he seems alright.” She squatted down to greet it with a chipper voice. “Hello. Are you excited?”

The island looked like it was filled to the brim with life. The two of them were on the beach where sediment from the ocean floor formed a sand platform, but beyond their landing spot, it was green. Fruit-bearing trees that adjusted to the heat reigned supreme, with a number of coconuts above, and chili peppers at about waist height. There were also countless tall grasses, and patches of fallen fronds from coconut trees. Whatever was out there would have to come from the sea to get the jump on them.

The little cactus beamed at Eliora, smiling with its mouth that looked like a carved gourd. It ran around on its little legs, eventually moving on and greeting the Slowbro she brought as well.

"I’ve been busy at the daycare by Verdanturf, and he’s just happy to get to go for a walk at this point."

Enes stood up, and pinched the waistband of his joggers. He shook them to dust off, then walked over to Eliora. He offered an outstretched hand, whose back had that same diamond-patterned grin tattooed in black. "So, what do you plan to do with your cut of the reward... if you don’t mind me asking?"

The little man made his way back to Enes and raised his hands, like a baby being asked to be picked up. He obliged after greeting her, kneeling and scooping the cactus into his arms. It looked taxing, but like a bed of nails, no one of his thorns could pierce him thanks to the others.

She’d never seen a daycare worker that looked like him, especially not one with such a tattoo on their hand, but she didn’t think too much of it. “You work there? That sounds nice.”

What was she going to do with the reward? She hadn’t really even considered it yet. “Oh, I don’t know. Buy some books, maybe. I just came because I thought it sounded fun!”

While to most it might’ve seemed sort of scary—or like a drag being away from civilization—Ellie was excited for the vacation and the chance to explore nature. This was her favorite.

The way he picked up the Cacnea didn’t look pleasant. “Does that not hurt?”

"It's a lot of fun, yeah. This one and the others that I have at home... they were all eggs that people neglected for too long."

That previous bit of narration wasn't wanton... The waves of the sea roared, louder than usual. It steadily picked up, like someone testing settings on audio equipment. The waves kept crashing, and parting way. Eventually, a jet of water hit Enes square in the face, but he continues his thought before addressing it.

"He sees me pick the others up, so I can't not pick him up."

What emerged from this process was a gnarly looking Toxapex. The ocean was a vicious place, where evolution continued on the basis of what could eat what, unabated by evolution forking and creating land-humanoids. Toxapex had baby-faces, sure. But, they were able to pierce the hardy flesh of Corsola and eat them.

Enes turned to face it, dropping Cacnea in the sand. It'd already seen them, and was too big to be made to back down by people. Enes' eyes shot aside, looking to Eliora for reassurance. "I'll probably do something boring with my cut. Probably gonna get a box of replacement parts for my e-bike and set it aside."

The unruly mass of tentacles opened with Poison Sting, immediately pinning Cacnea and taking it by surprise. Cacnea responded with Leech Seed, healing itself just enough to keep the poison at bay, but not enough to deal with the needle that struck it.

“That’s so sad. Kind of you to take them in.”

His reasoning for holding the cactus would’ve made her smile, had her attention not been stolen by the Toxapex’s jet. She gasped as the Cacnea was pinned all of the sudden. “Oh no!” Eyes didn’t have to go to her Slowbro to know he was useless in this situation. A paw came up to scratch his head, eyes staring with what surely seemed like dimwittedness.

She whistled sharply, and a wave suddenly picked up—and didn’t stop. The SURF only got taller, and Ellie’s Milotic appeared behind it, levitating and forcing it forward to, hopefully, wash the Toxapex back into the ocean.

His words were, unfortunately, lost on her. Eliora did not have a fantastic attention span, especially when things like were happening.

"I have a feeling you'd do the same, if you had the chance."

That vague feeling was confirmed, when Eliora's team closed in on Toxapex right away. When the barbed creature clung to the moist sand for dear life, as a Surf tried to carry it back to the sea. For a moment, it was thrown out into the water. As it tried to claw its way back to the coast, Toxapex ended up pulling more of the sand out into the sea.

"..."

Enraged and determined, the sea creature pulled itself ashore, and tried to get the jump on the defenseless looking Slowbro. Toxapex steadied two tentacles, and tried launching a series of darts at it with Pin Missile.

Enes stepped aside, and watched it. It looked vulnerable under the dome of tentacles, but actually getting in there could be a death sentence. He whistled to Cacnea. "Okay! Just club the top of its head, so they can push it away again! Use Needle Arm."

The little man waddled over, then leapt to close the gap. One long needle stuck out among all the others, as it tried to bash Toxapex and stun it. It then rolled harmlessly off the side afterwards, then picked itself out of the sand and ran away from Toxapex.

That was absolutely true. She certainly would have.

It seemed that their short fight was over—but only for a moment, until the Toxapex had begun to made its way back onto the beach. She took a step in reverse from it, not wanting any further altercation, and then it attacked Slowbro.

‘Slowww!’ As it was pelted with PIN MISSILES, it began to WITHDRAW into its shell, which then sat atop the sand, stilled and playing dead maybe.

“Send another wave, please!”

She looked out to the levitating Milotic still out at sea, and the serpent did as suggested. An even more powerful SURF rose to take it back under and into the water.

The unruly mass of tentacles was clubbed, then blasted with water. Between that and its attempt to anchor itself in the sand it loosened trying to claw its way onto the beach, Toxapex dug its own grave. It was pushed back out to the sea, twirling away from the island in a spiral like an american football.

"...Thanks."

It looked too lopsided for Toxapex to try going back in again. It had easier meals. Save for the growl of the waves, it went quiet again. Enes then walked over, and put a hand on the large, slate-grey shell infront of him.

"You can come out now. We scared that thing off, okay?"

Enes bit his lip. Cacnea continued to recover, using Ingrain near a patch of tall grass, to try and catch the harsh sun of the day beginning in earnest. It rooted itself in the ground, crowding out nearby grasses under the earth. He was okay with quiet most of the time, but he had to say something. Enes turned to face Eliora, and sat on the sand next to the Slowbro shell. "Thanks. I don't know if we could've fought that thing off without you."

The Toxapex was gone, drawn away, and back into the ocean.

“Thank you!” she called out to the levitating Milotic. The serpent cooed a serene song and then dove back under the crashing waves again, content to explore the new depths for a while.

At Enes’s encouragement, Slowbro began to leave his shell once again with a weary, confused groan. ’Bro…

Ellie turned back to the Cacnea further inland.

“Sure! That was all Milotic, though, really. Is your Cacnea alright?”

It went quiet rather quickly. The big oaf slowly peeled out of its shell, now that the threat was dealt with. Enes started to pet it and play with the top of its head, as if it were a dog, to reassure the Slowbro.

"...You're safe now."

He then perked up. Eliora offered a question that he'd been neglecting a little too long. Sure, it was ingrained in the sand and soaking up ground-water nutrients, but Cacnea was still fighting off the poison. It'd definitely need a few hours to meet the definition of 'okay'.

"He'll need to rest, yeah. Normally, the worst he has to deal with is some hotshot trainer leaving their demonic Bagon with us. This was... This may have been too much for him."

Enes bit his lip. The sun continued to glare at them, but the cactus needed it the most, of them all. He felt around the sand for a rock, which he then tossed up and down to assess its weight. He stood and twisted his entire body to hurl it like a baseball pitcher, knocking down a coconut from a tree. He then walked over to it and clubbed the fallen fruit once again with the rock to pierce its shell. He returned with half of a coconut for himself, and half offered to Eliora in an outstretched hand. "He'll bounce back soon. But... where did your Milotic go?"
