he's got a little puppy tagging along with him now. i don't need this shit. and judging by the pudgy look of the guy, he hasn't seen some action in a while. when he opens his mouth, august's lip twitches in a grimace. remus opts to ignore the guy for the sake of his own sanity.

"i wasn't planning on helping," he snaps. "he owed us money. i went to collect. it's not my fault he let his dumbass kid mishandle her pokemon." 

why am i explaining myself? he must admit, he hasn't had anyone to talk to recently other than eden, and a lot of his thoughts are wrapped up in things he can't tell her. like how worried he is for her. 

and remus may be a good listener, but he's shit with conversation. "how'd you find me anyway? it was a solo job."

"well, her father certainly isn't in any condition to help her," he says. not that he feels particularly bad that her shit dad decided he wouldn't pay back on time. but he's not a godsdamn monster. and he's still got some time to kill. 

he eyes the bagon that trots on a leash behind the man. and then he raises a brow. "a young money?" who is this guy? 

remus casts a glance back at him and then nods, eyes glowing a soft blue. they leave some of the rock and crags of route 114 behind and traipse into the forest, where the pitiful mews of a meowth kitten can be heard farther in. 

"at any rate, two people ought to get the job done quicker." remus stops suddenly and points up. 

and there it is, clinging for its life on a thin tree branch, in quite possibly the tallest tree in the near area. august sighs. "you got any fliers? anything that won't scare it too bad?"

"usually gets 'em talking faster." he raises a brow. this certainly isn't in the realm of this grunt's expertise, that's for sure. again, why am i explaining myself to him? gods, he's gotta stop running on just a couple hours of sleep. 

it's easier when he's with her. 

he sighs and looks unimpressed as his new partner's pokemon shudders against the side of the tree. the meowth clings harder. thin piece of bark flutter to the ground as it holds on for dear life. 

he drops a pokeball at his side. faustus is still too small to fly so high without exerting himself, so instead he releases his treecko. cato crouches by the base of the tree, wiggling the sticky pads of his toes while august explains the situation. 

and then the gecko slinks up the tree, opposite the alolan exeggutor. he coils as the tree starts to slim near the top and cocks his head at the wailing kitten. it wants to shudder in fright, but the several heads wheeling by it have sent it into paranoid shock.

so cato does the only thing he can think of and whips his tail around, sending a shockwave of razor wind over the kitten. it's lifted from its perch and spins wildly, claws grasping for purchase. 

it finds such purchase on the neck of the alolan exeggutor.

victory seems so close, but it's whisked away just as quickly as it had approached. august resists the urge to snap. got any snacks? what does he look like? a middle-aged mom on the road with a couple of toddlers? no, he doesn't have any snacks. 

he almost turns the question around with some scathing remark, but miraculously refrains. instead, he cuts his losses - the meowth will be alright in the long run - and gestures to remus. 

the lucario cocks his head and then skirts around the tree. he then backs up and takes a running leap; his form becomes a blur as he ricochets from tree trunk to tree trunk with extreme speed. 

when he lands back on the ground before the two men, he has the wriggling cat in his paws. its claws spin wildly as it lashes out from fright, but they scrape off of the lucario's steel-like fur.

"at least one of us is useful," august says as cato crawls back down the tree.
