he tilts his head back, downing the black coffee without preamble.

[break][break] it's his third shift in a row, which isn't surprising given that this particular rotation tended to be brutal amongst all the residents. it didn't help that he had an exam at the end of the week, of which hadn't yet started studying for.

[break][break] 'it's fine,' he told himeself. convinced himself. it always managed to be fine one way or another.

[break][break] "dr. maher?" the twenty-five year old blinks as a nurse arrives, handing him a tablet. "you have a new patient in room 3b."

[break][break] he looks down at the tablet. 27 year old. male. trauma.

[break][break] he pauses. "thank you, cecelia." placing the empty coffee cup on the counter for her to throw away, he turns away and heads towards the room. if he hears an annoyed scoff behind him, he doesn't pay attention to it.

[break][break] the curtain crinkles as he pulls it to the side, revealing his "patient".

He should have probably bothered with coming to the hospital right after they left Mt. Chimney.

Of course he didn’t though.

It isn’t like his injuries are that bad, right? Everyone had had to deal with the scalding heat and ash, and some hadn’t even had goggles or anything to protect their faces with as they went up the mountain. If anything, he had been more prepared than many, and yet somehow, he had still ended up not being able to do much that was particularly helpful (in Vic’s own opinion).

That is, of course, aside from those viral selfies with Groudon that had everyone asking if he was that guy and what it had been like to be at Mt. Chimney....

Turns out there aren’t many guys with pink hair in Hoenn, and so it’s kind of easy to recognize him.

Honestly, Vic finds it all kind of exhausting, especially considering that he has barely been able to sleep ever since returning to Lilycove – hence the hospital visit.

”Oh. Hey, Caden!” Not like he had expected to run into anyone he knows, yet the smile comes naturally when recognizing one of his gym buddies (although ‘buddies’ perhaps may not be the word Caden would use when referring to Vic).

the name didn't bring anything to his attention, mostly because caden didn't often spend time thinking about others he found inconsequential. uninspiring. unmemorable.

[break][break] however, the flash of pink and unmistakable bright grin is anything but unmemorable, and for once, the intern finds himself speechless as he stares at the cheerful expression of ...

[break][break] what were they? gym partners? no. that was too familiar. neighbors? too colloquial.

[break][break] "don't be silly. it's my job," he says quickly, breezily, before stepping forward until he's right in front of the other. "what brings you in today mr. wexler?" he smiles - perfect, cordial, easy.
