Long Overdue, literally.

"Not particularly, no. Sometimes I get mad whenever ya do something reckless, but... that's more outta concern than anger." He said as he crossed his arms, brows furrowing together as his gaze was drawn up in thought, lips pursed.

"Yer my friend Eris, and ya don't seem like an evil mastermind." Doug replied dryly as he turned around, squatting in front of the girl before reaching and petting her hat.

He preferred the honest, direct approach when it came to speaking about anything.

"And that's about it. I don't need to jump through logic hoops to justify it." He said bluntly, shrugging his shoulders. "I figured ya would tell us when ya were ready to share... and ya did, so there. All that other stuff... Ya could have said something? Really now? I dunno... seems like a lotta risk to take for a 3 feet tall little frog. And man, it's all so heavy, why do us kids have to lug around that kinda responsibility? "

His hand slipped under Eris' hat, ruffling her hair much as he would Hideo Kino's.

"Ya ain't at fault for anything, Eris. It ain't children's responsibility to deal with any of this crap. I only do it cause most adults seem to suck at it."

Standing back up to his full height, the youth's hand spressed against the small of his back and pushed, popping the lower disks of his spine with a relieved sigh before he spun about to face the massive tree in the horizon.

"Awright? If ya really need to blame yerself 'bout something, ya can take turns with Hideo and Andy Blackadder blaming yerself for my stress medication. Now! Shall we go plant some flowers?"

Even when she brings up the fact that she's aligned with those who destroyed their home, he doesn't see her any differently and even worries about whether she's being safe... If her parents had still been around, would they have said the same things that he did? More so than anything, they would've tried to comfort her, wouldn't they?

Which is why she freezes when he kneels down to speak to her, patting her head and offering such gentle words. And the way he teases her even as he speaks... all of it feels way too familiar, way too soon. It isn't her fault, it shouldn't be her responsibility, so why can't she drop this sense of guilt? Why does it continue to eat at her heart?

"Sorry..." She's trying so hard to rub away the tears, choking on her ugly sobs and sniffles. "I'm sorry..." Every time she tries to suck it up, the tears won't stop flowing and she continues to crumble. Reiner cradles her, keeping her safe as always. Yet it only highlights the flaws she possesses. She's useless and undeniably weak in such a situation; She needs help but she's not ready to let go of the walls she's built up.

Then again, maybe she doesn't have to, not just yet.

He wishes he could be the rock Eris needs in times like these. But her emotional walls seemed untresspassable no matter how many times he tries.

He would just have to keep trying until she got fed up and opened the gates herself..

"Ya don't have to be, Eris." He said, crouching in front of her once again, reaching out to gently brush aside her tears. "And yer free to cry. As much as ya need."

For these kids, he would channel an infinite amount of patience and care if he had to.

Always suppressing her worries, always sweeping her concerns under the table, always smiling to try to brighten someone else's day, always laughing to try and blind herself to the things that she sees. It's because there's no one to watch over her that she has to watch over herself - Crying had become a waste of energy when she knew that no one was left to hug her or tell her that things would be alright.

So maybe that's why she doesn't try to put up any walls, why she's leaning into him and hanging on tight. While he's still there to listen to her, while she still has a voice to speak with, she'll let her emotions run wild and stop bottling them up.

Long Overdue, literally.

He's not much older than her. He doesn't know what to say or do to make it all better.

But he cannot ignore her cry, either. Incompetent as he may be to help.

He collapses to his knees and throws his arms around her, hugging her firmly as she bawls her eyes.

She was a good girl who wanted to do the right thing- but because she was good, betraying her new family might just kill her inside. He wants to blame rocket for doing this to her- for taking her parents away and burying themselves into her heart.

But the blame game wouldn't solve anything. It would only give his anger direction.

"Eris." He said, holding her. "No matter what you choose- I won't blame you. I won't judge you. I won't... hate you."

He pet her head gently.

"We'll still hang out, we'll still explore, I'll still teach ya things, and learn things from ya...

No matter the choice, there was at least someone who would not look at her differently. He needed her to know that.

"No matter what, I'll always help you. I'll always be on your side. Okay?"

He hadn't expected any different, but he had still hoped she would choose them.

Regardless, he had made a promise to her, and with will-o-wisps that haunted the cemetery as their witness, he could keep to it, because Eris needed at least one true friend in her life.

"I promise ya." He muttered, not letting go, hugging back just as firmly. "I won't ever abandon ya like that. Ever."

It was a cliché because it was true: Real friends stuck together through thick and thin.

He had failed his friends from Kanto before- never again.

Because she wants to believe in it when there's nothing else for her to hold onto. When she pulls away, she finds that his gentle touch lingers, keeping her warm and cozy even when the bitter sea breeze blows right past them. And perhaps, there's enough to go around, the ever-silent Luxray carefully slipping in between them and nuzzling Doug's shoulder. He gently paws his hand, growling softly as his gaze locks onto the teen.

Reassuring Eris Halla.

He had no idea of what she meant, or if the Razz she spoke was the same one he barely knew, but still he grinned and laughed, ruffling her hair vigorously.

"'Darn right. Do we really need a truth detector to confirm it, though?" He asked with a snicker as he slowly let go of the girl- at her own speed.

"How are ya feeling, Eris?" He asked after a moment, brows knitting together while he patted her head gently, his head tilting. "Still up for watchin' some flowers? We can getcha home if ya've gotten tired."

Emotional Catharsis was exhausting- or so he had heard. He hadn't experienced it for himself just yet, but he wasn't about to drag the girl into a trek if there was a small chance that it would encumber her.

[attr="class","inner-finally"]Does she really need a truth detector to confirm it? Perhaps, but after this, that need seems to diminish even if just by a little. It takes her a while before she's ready to let go of Doug, but when she's ready she does her best to smile even through the tears.

"I'm okay... not that tired..." She murmurs, fidgeting with the hem of her coat as she enjoys the sensation of her head being pat for the moment. "We can go see the flowers." And she means it - Seeing something pretty and nostalgic might just help to ease the mess of emotions in her heart, give her a safe space to work the little things out in her head.

Reiner gently untangles himself and rubs his cheek against her cheek, tugging on her wrist gently as if telling her to climb on. The walk isn't a long one, but he'd rather she remain as comfortable as possible whilst the moment lasts. Then he shakes his mane out once he's ensured she's not going to fall off, dipping his head towards Doug as he takes a step down the path.
