Always here, always the same place. Whenever they have the chance to visit, it's always with a bouquet of white egret orchids, always with their best companion since childhood. It's always them, only ever them, always has been, always will be.

Silence drapes over the memorial grounds with a beauty that just can't be explained, a sacred peace that can't ever be tainted even when Rocket encroaches upon Sootopolis. For they have already taken what's most important to those that lay here - not in body, but in memory and spirit - Their homes, their dreams, their bright futures that could have come to pass.

It is here that they remember what has been stolen from them, here that they are able to speak freely, here that they are able to cry, to lash out, to utter nonsensical things and be what they've always been - young kids with no clue of what they'd go on to do in life, dreamers that simply kept ahold of their little wishes and spoke of the wonders of the world that they hoped to uncover.

Wilted orchids are swapped out for fresher ones, the link between heart and memories always kept alive even as she holds the last bouquet in arms.

Dust is swept away with a delicate touch, precious names uncovered from the turmoil that has all too recently come to pass. Once again, in Rocket's grasp. Kanto, all over again. She tries to smile but there's no point keeping it when they'd be the ones to see through it in an instant.

"I made a few new friends recently... they're really nice people! Not like the ones at school... you always gave me that look when you got a call from the teachers... but they're not like them at all! So you don't have to worry! Extra promise!" As Reiner makes himself comfortable upon the marbled grounds, so does Eris take her seat, curled up in the soft pile of fur and playfully sticking her tongue out at him as she steals some of his warmth.

Long Overdue

The clack of heeled shoes along the marble floors soon makes itself known, a tall figure making its way through the monument with head held tall and face bare for all to see.

John Douglas Sullivan has no intention of donning silly costumes or masks to honor the fallen. Rocket occupation or not, he would make this pilgrimage and if anyone thought they could do something about it, they were welcome to try.

Nevertheless, the last thing he expected was to run into one of his young friend's there and then.

"Ah. Eris?" He asked after a moment, blinking down at the girl with palpable surprise.

His large coat hung heavily upon his shoulders, making one of his arms completely as he reached up to scratch at his bandaided nose. His serious expression melted away within seconds, a smile gracing his lips as he squatted in front of the girl, reaching out to pat her head.

"How have you been, little frog?" He couldn't imagine anything had been easy for her recently.

There are many things that come to mind when their gazes meet but of everything, the one that stands out the most is fear.

"What are you doing here? You shouldn't be here right now!" Hushed are her whispers, her eyes flitting across their surroundings to check if anyone else is nearby. She flinches from the headpat he gives her, her hands clenching tighter around the bouquet of wilted orchids as Reiner peaks his head by just a little.

"You'll get caught if you stay here... you're kind of infamous, aren't you? The Rockets would probably fight you if they saw you here..."
[break][break]
Such an incident remains a probability in her own words, only because she knows that no patrols around this area have been scheduled for another hour or so. But the thought still remains and she left with an uneasiness that she can't quite explain. She pushes gently against his chest, a plea held in her gaze.

"It's not safe for you to be around."

He feels something tug at his chest as Eris flinches, a sigh leaving his lips.

"It's the Sootopolis Memorial, Eris. I'm memorializing, clearly." He said in his best attempt at humor, offering the girl a wry grin. "Don'cha worry 'bout lil' ol' me. I'm very good at getting the heck outta dodge... plus, Rocket's pretending they are all nice and non-murdery for the masses. They ain't gonna do crap out 'ere in broad daylight."

Which was precisely why he was visiting on broad daylight, with no costume, and made sure to take public avenues to get there. The whole of Sootopolis probably knew he was there; and they would know it was no coincidence if he died.

"Anyway... How's life, squirt?" Doug said as he dropped on his bum on the floors, legs crossing under him as he turned his gaze towards the monument. "I thought I was doing pretty well after the tournament, but I guess it was all was just in my head."

He scratched at his chin for a moment, wondering if he should ask about what little he had heard on his way there...

There is truth to the words he speaks, but Eris really wouldn't put it behind a few vindictive Rockets to turn a sacred resting grounds into a mini war zone. Regardless, she doesn't press on the matter, merely choosing to trust in his confidence as she turns her eyes back to the monument.

"Life's... okay." She guesses. It's been neither here nor there, especially with how quickly the world seems to be slipping from her grasp. A surge of activity means that she has many more fragments to pick up on, many more mysteries to pursue and many more puzzles to solve - Groudon, Kyogre, Palkia, Xerneas... Did her mother use to face these crossroads in her line of work?

It feels impossible to put her thoughts into words, even if bits and pieces linger upon the tip of her tongue. So she doesn't even try to put it together, merely gesturing to the empty spot beside Reiner as she cants her head.

"Did you wanna talk about? Pa always said it's good to talk to people if you feel like you have a lot of thoughts on your mind... That's why I always come here to talk about stuff with them... tell them what I've been up to, all the people I've met..."

There will be no lies or deceit in this place, there rarely ever is. Somehow, just being close to the thought of them eases her, brings her a sense of comfort in this age of turmoil that she so desperately seeks.

"I'm sure momma and pa would love to hear about the stuff you've been up to... They always liked listening and telling stories, after all."

His shoulders sagged after Eris Halla' response.

The girl didn't seem certain in her choice of words, but he would take her word for it. He should just be happy if even one person he cared about was doing well in the shit show that was Hoenn.

He ran a hand through his hair and dramatically blew out air at Eris' question. Did he want to talk about it? Well, he wasn't drunk this time, and his good sense said no.

"It ain't something I should trouble m'friends with." Doug said after a moment, leaning back onto his arms and craning his head back until he was staring at the sky.

Despite the city being occupied by gangsters, it remained enviably beautiful. It was frustrating to see how well Rocket could hold up an act.

Eris words made it hard for him to keep his thoughts bottled up. But if he were to speak up, and say what was eating him up...

It wouldn't be Eris parents he would be speaking to.

"Stuff I've been up to... I..." He said, thinking back to the several things that happened. "I, Uh..."

He had won the tournament.

He had failed at getting any responses from Tapu Lele since that day. No, wait, he had gotten one call from her.

And made everything worse for chryssa glasgow in the process.

He had failed his soldiers.

He had failed his soldiers' families, and brought back caskets in place of sons and daughters.

He had failed Sootopolis, and now stood in the aftermath, none worse for the wear himself, as if he were somehow special and different from those who had died.

... Oh, and he had made a drunken ass out of himself at the dinner thing.

He had failed, time and again, so, so many times, in ways that far outweighed his one, measly accomplishment.

What was he even doing...?

"I've been fucking up nonstop." He finally decided with a clap of his hands, his gaze on the monument, lips set onto a thin line as his shoulders fell.

He looked... defeated.

Rather appropriate, all things considered!

"... Sorry for the language."

Of course it would be that bad. Who wouldn't have such a visceral reaction after everything that's gone down in Sootopolis? She can't even begin to imagine the guilt that sits upon his mind. The lives lost, the sparks extinguished - All for the sake of a world to be conquered.

She opens her mouth to speak, but words fail her whenever she tries. Hushed reassurance does very little to ease the sorrow, encouragement merely slips through the cracks of a broken spirit. She knows this because she's been there before, they both have scars that can't simply be erased by losing themselves in the flow of time.

"There's... a lot we can't change. Sometimes, we don't have the power to."
[break][break]
She would know this better than anyone, bearing witness to the atrocities that man can leave in its wake.
[break][break]
"I've been told lots of times that I'm just a kid, that I shouldn't rush to find answers. But I can't help but go searching for them anyways, even when it gets dangerous." A brief sigh beckons her to sweep unruly hair from her eyes, uncertain of where she's going with this. "It's kinda easy for people to say stuff like, go live the life they would have wanted you to. Or... live to keep their memories alive. It doesn't do anything to dissolve the guilt."

Perhaps this is a mistake. Perhaps, she's just speaking the obvious to someone who's already down on their luck.

"I've been growing lots of flowers for people recently... writing down memories of things that have changed and sneaking around the city to help anyone that asks. It doesn't change what has happened, but it changes what might... and it distracts me from the bad things in life, just being able to see people smile... just being able to try my best..."

A moment of silence followed Eris' words, the young man staring blankly at the monument for a moment.

Then he stood up, grasping at his hat.

"I don't really know what I should do anymore." He admitted, placing it atop his head. "But thanks all the same, Eris. I appreciate it."

It felt as though he only caused trouble whenever he tried to help. His goals in Mauville felt more dangerous than ever; the lives of his soldiers, more fragile and valuable.

Though the deaths in his company were not numerous, their absence was felt every day. The Camp felt emptier without them. And their lives being cut short was his fault.

Approaching the monument, the youth clapped his hands together and closed his eyes, bowing to it in silence.

He was not religious, and had only grown more distant from such things in recent years; but people he respected were, and Gods were real.

Maybe one of them- one who wasn't simply looking to be entertained- would offer insight. Or peace of mind. Or anything that would let the youth sleep at night.

Cause as things were, the gaping hole in his chest might eat him alive.

His eyes fluttered open moments later, and his hands fell limply to his sides.

"Hey Eris. Where do you grow those flowers anyway?"

She doesn't interrupt his moment of silence, nor does she judge him for the prayers he offers. In fact, she does it too in her own way, reaching into her backpack to pull out a parcel wrapped in newspaper and placing it beside the fresh bouquet.

A package of handmade sparklers, one that would probably see use when the peace of night set upon this island. She remembers the recipe right down to the minute details of how its handled, the fondest memories of her father overflowing as she numbly traces the sticks.

"I grow some of them at home, some of them in the gardens nearby."

She also has a tiny patch she's made within the Tree of Life itself but she doesn't quite feel like explaining how or why she has access to such a location.

The words came not a moment later as the youth's posture shifted, forced cheer coursing through his limbs as he turned to face Eris, a practiced grin on his lips.

Eris was sad too, and she had it much worse than him; he was too old to be moping and dragging down a sad little girl to his level.

"I'm thinkin'... a flower field sounds nice. Appropriate. How do ya feel 'bout Poppies, Eris?"

To keep your heart in a bottle, even when the bottle starts to crack. When the shards begin to stab into the heart and the air of the cruel world beyond rushes in, the two of them are still more focused on the other rather than themselves. A broken window sits between them, misted over and pretending to be a broken mirror in the mind of the younger one.

"Oh, lemme say goodbye real quick then."

Turning back to the monument, Eris quickly ruffles through her backpack and retrieves a notebook worn by time. The pages flip open, precious memories stored within with new stories waiting to be told. From the centre of the book, she pulls out a sketch and holds it close to her chest in silence, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. When she opens them again, she's said all that she needs to, the sketch now tucked under the bouquet as she pushes herself to her feet with Reiner's help.

"Poppies are pretty... and we could grow some Lily of the Valleys? Egret orchids too..."

The list goes on, her emotions safely tucked away when she closes the notebook and keeps it close to her heart.

He nodded and turned away, folding his arms behind his back and bouncing on his heels.

"I ain't too well acquainted with flower names, just carnations and poppies. But they are pretty, ain't they? Yeah, let's do it."

He craned back his head to look at the sky.

"There's a place near Mauville. Very nice. Very open. I'm sure nobody will mind if I put couple thousand flowers in it."

He paused after a moment, his gaze turning down.

"... Actually, maybe we should start right here in Sootopolis."

Poppies were the Flowers to remember those who died through military service.

Maybe some dense Sootopolitans would get the memo if he threw it right at their face.

When Doug mentions planting flowers right in Sootopolis, Eris finds herself losing focus of the person that she knows. Bitterness seems to coat his intentions, loss clouding his sense of judgement as grief slowly sinks deep.

"I have a place here... a flower field in the Tree of Life... I visit it almost every day when no one else is around..."
[break][break]
She speaks before she even realises what she's admitting to. To sneak past the Rockets guarding the area, to have the time to tend to an entire field and not have it torn down when discovered; For a moment, Eris freezes, looking to Doug as her heart begins to unravel upon her sleeves.

He'll probably figure it out. There's no way he isn't already suspicious of her identity. But what happens when he confirms it? What will he think of her? Twisted, manipulative and dangerous - Just like those who had razed their home to the ground.

When she mentioned the 'tree', he quirked a brow, cocking his head.

"The tree of what now?" Doug said in jest, grinning at Eris. "Is that what they are callin' that thing?"

Even from where they stood, the 'tree' was perfectly visible, stretching ever skyward and giving the youth a moderate headache just from trying to figure out how it was doing that with his rudimentary, physics 101 understanding.

That thing was too big to support itself- should've been, at any rate.

"Huh. How do you plant flowers in a tree? Is it like along the bark or somethin'?" He hadn't swung by the massive landmark yet. Seemed like the kind of place that would be packed with Rockets-

He could probably sneak in, but he was there publicly to make a statement, so the tree had gone ignored until now...

But well, he was with Eris now. Best not get her in trouble too.

"Sounds cool! Let's get in there!" He said with a grin, rolling his shoulder before reaching back to grab at his hat. He then winked. "We're sneakin' in, right?"
