“Do I gotta say it again: John and I went through this shit too, back at the Tournament!” he hollered back. Thankfully he always kept his hair short, so it was less likely to catch on fire—

Unlike his preference for scarves, now those were prone to catching fire without warning. Thank hell he didn’t wear one today, which in hindsight was a good idea.

Now that they were literally flying like Circus Charlie (only instead of on the back of a Pyroar they were high up in the air) he made sure to flatten himself as close to the Salamence’s back as possible, avoiding the brunt of the flames.

Now if I was flying with a Talonflame this would be extremely cheaty, he thought—wondering if he could be able to use his own Talonflame the next time.

And then—

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“The fire’s gone out.”

“What?!”

“Yeah, you heard me!”

Chancing a look where the other was flying—well, well, that was—

Muting the earpiece, he turned to where Melody was flying.

“That’s technically cheating, you know!” he called out to her, coming to a stop after clearing one of the wildly-swinging rings. “This is a test of natural flying!”

To think there was one more obstacle up ahead.

“What now?”

“Set ‘em back on fire!”

"You're an expert at flying and John Sullivan is insane!" She instantly gave a retort instantly as Alexei argued "natural" flying ability. "Fire rings are not a natural obstacle!" she shouted [break][break]

"Besides you never said I couldn't!" she said confidently as she gave a little playful wink and stuck her tongue out at Alexei. A group of unfezent flew nearby and quickly got out of the way as the reigniting of the rings scared them and sent them scattering. [break][break]

She protested as they reignited "Damn it! No fair! You should reward creativity!" she continued before the rings were now alight again and Melody was gonna be unable to turn them off again, fearing the repercussions. She let out a small sigh as they couldn't take this course slow, they'd have to suddenly stop and go. "Welp." she said doing a small cross over her head and chest with her hands as she asked Arceus for forgiveness again. [break][break]

She snaked her way through the rings, trying even harder than the last challenge to avoid any contact at all with the obstacle as it could prove fatal to her challenge and end it quickly as she'd need to land immediately. She closed her eyes, trusting in Noivern to guide her safely through the challenge and... [break][break]

"Oh hey!" She said opening her eyes and realizing Noivern managed to get her through it. "Noivern you did it!" She smiled as she hugged him tightly and gave him a lot of pats on his mane and scratches that he chirped gleefully.

The logistics for this was fucking insane, to say the least.

How those rings remained ablaze without falling was—something else, really!

He could only laugh at the shade thrown at John Sullivan.

“Well, blame the tournament organizers too!” he hollered back as he took it slowly, steady, steady—

The flaming rings were eventually cleared in short order; at the cost of some part of his Salamence’s wings getting singed because they were too damned wide.

…were the rings equally as sizeist as well in this instance?! He’d have to talk with his staff later about that.

“Okay, last obstacle,” one of the other helpers called out once they’d approached—the skies looked… unnaturally clear. But there was a reason for that.

“Got keen eyes? Fly fast, because we’ll be dropping a bunch of Pokémon plush toys all over the place! All’a them are Flying-types—”

“Hey, just the type?” Alexei interjected, chuckling.

“Boss, shush, we know,” came the equally snarky reply. “Anyway, back to regular programming—there’s going to be a plushie drop up ahead. First one to find and catch the shiny Rufflet plushie wins. But it ain’t going to be easy…”

“Of course you’re not going to make this easy, I know you,” he teased from the back of his Salamence, who let out a huffy snort.

“Because there’s only one shiny Rufflet plushie going to be dropped among the mass.”

“Oh, come on,” Alexei chuckled before looking over at Melody.

“Yep, just one. Good luck!”

With that, the final crack of the pistol echoed across the space, and out of nowhere—the literal plush toy apocalypse began.

All manner of plush Flying-types began raining down from the heavens—and knowing that this was going to be a major pain in the ass, Alexei flew straight into the falling horde, trying to pick out where the damned thing was.

Clearly they did this to him just to watch him suffer.

She was sure with how much flying was going on in the middle of the day, melody was going to have a farmer's tan. She was listening to the final challenge. "What the fuck? HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED- THIS CHALLENG-" she said becoming frustrated with the whole damn thing! "Whatever! We've managed to clear every challenge so far so this shouldn't be anything we cant do! Right noivern?!" she cheered as Noivern let out a blast of sound with it's roar. [break][break]

The plushies began to fall and noivern swooped downwards extremely fast. Melody had an idea where the plushie was from where she saw it fall and Noivern was had some really good detection skills thanks to his ability to sense prey with sounds! They dove down into the plushie waterfall and made for a grab at the rufflet.[break][break]

When they came out of the other side of the waterfall Melody had aimed to grab at the plushy and when she came out the other end opened her eyes and saw she managed to snatch it from Alexei! "WE DID IT NOIVERN!!" She shouted at the top of her lungs.

There were so many plush toys falling, and all of them looked like—

As he swatted a Pidgey one out of the way, he couldn’t help but notice…

“Why the hell do they all have googly eyes?!”

Was this some kind of a prank?!

As he struggled to pick out the noticeably blue Rufflet, a shout somewhere caught his attention—and he realized that Melody was faster. Dang it, how’d she grab it so quickly?!

All at once the falling cascade of plushies stopped falling, and if Melody would look closely at the shiny Rufflet plushie’s eyes, they were…

Googly eyes too.

“You got me beat,” he said as he flew over, holding a googly-eyed Noibat plushie toy as he approached. “Here, gimme that, you take this,” he added.

At the same time the plushies were exchanged, though, she would notice something pinned to the ‘ruff’ on the googly-eyed plushie Noibat’s chest—
