the battlefield is vastly different from fernando's own, the ones she has become accustomed to. his are lined with technology, ever recording, ever calculating. she's adapted, as she has with most everything else that's changed as of late, but there is a quaint familiarity she feels when stepping onto churned earth. 

she withdraws the two pokemon she'd registered with. calcifer is her lead on this one, the instructor for her ground unit. they've both run drills before, but never have they partnered together. 

how cocky she is, going into a gym battle as if it were a mere training exercise. of course, if she'd meant to make a scene, she would have brought lyune. 

"a gracious offer. thank you." calcifer and killian's massive bodies explode from their pokeballs, shaking the ground with their entrance. the tyrantrum rears her head, stomping her feet in anticipation as she eyes her targets. 

she's no idea what moves the enemy pokemon know, but the most dangerous one for the two of them is that magnezone. if it takes out calcifer, killian will lose the advantage of a hawk's eye view of the field. 

"stay low, cal. take position 4." she's usually saddled in one of her dragons; muscle memory and instinct are faster than words, especially in the tumultuous roll of a battle, and her dragons can communicate far more easily than she. but each member of her team still knows their calls, should a translator be unavailable. 

so calcifer takes to the air, weaving about killian as the massive dinosaur trudges forward towards their targets. she'll take the brunt of any resistant hits thrown their way so freya can get a sense of what the gym leader is packing. 

and if his magnezone has any ranged steel up its sleeve, calcifer will counter with a reflect.

his magnezone aims to snipe them with something. and as his exeggutor roots itself to its spot, freya's tactics shift. her dragons will need to cover the ground between them quickly; close quarters combat will end the battle for his pokemon. 

she is as familiar with her pokemon's weaknesses as she is their strengths. aeris, sypha, and etherea are her safeguards, the ones that protect her monstrosities from the psychic attacks they are more susceptible to. but they are not here to ward off these maneuvers. 

"break. advance with 6," she barks. calcifer swoops, wings snapping outward as his neck arches. a smokescreen belches from his maw, obscuring the space between their combatants. 

the psychic wave ripples through the smoke and freya strains her ears, dropping to a squat as she presses her hand against the earth. 

the methodical trembling of the earth goes off-kilter for a moment as killian flinches back from the blow, but her exasperated roar, pitched with strength, lets freya know she'd braced herself in time before the wave.

the magnezone's sensors are a thorn in freya's side, but she's made her call. all her pokemon can do now is react to what's coming. killian is slow to react as she comes to find her footing again, resuming her charge, but she was never the one meant to lead the pair. 

as the smokescreen parts, a wave of heat expands. calcifer's outpouring of smoke has struck ember. lava-like plumes of fire spin around killian. his claws strike the ground from behind her as she rampages onward, as the beam of electricity connects with his wall of flame. 

the blast leaves scorch marks on her scales; blood splatters the rocks. but in the explosion the electricity had expelled, leaving her free of paralysis. fire at her heels, ash on her teeth, she bows her head, stomping past the rooted exeggutor to unleash her fury on the magnezone.

the magnezone still stands. its lights flicker and the propulsions keeping it aloft wink out, but it steadies itself before killian can smash her head down and finish the job. the flash cannon strikes her in the chest and sends her skidding back; talons rip grooves into the ground as she attempts to stay her ground. 

but the steel pierces her rock-like hide and she stumbles. her massive body shakes the ground as she falls. 

freya sees red. her breath is hot, throat scorching, as her fury rebounds over calcifer. he draws his wings in tightly, looping up into the air, darting like an arrow towards the two pokemon. 

a wave of psychic force seeks to cripple him, but he holds fast. he's made it through this battle mostly unscathed and while killian may have her size, calcifer is one of freya's prime pokemon. he shrugs the attack off with ease, gathers his breath, and expels a flamethrower that could bring a city to ash.

a sacrifice that leaves freya with the upper hand. the exeggutor falls, leaves crisped and wilting. calcifer's claws flex as his momentum carries him in a tight arc. the beeping alerts him to the magnezone's strategy and he and freya both know that time is of the essence. 

its sturdiness has held it aloft this long, but calcifer's muscles ripple with energy, full and lacking exertion. he continues his arc, wingtips gracing the ground, as he spins furiously around the magnezone. dust and grass kick up in his twirling as he moves like a makeshift tornado around the electric-type, body a blur as he attempts to shake off the sights.



plasma-like flame pours from his maw again, spinning around him and pluming below, threatening to swallow the magnezone whole.

it was calcifer's one chance. the flames aren't hot enough to scratch its sides. fire spin ought to have been flamethrower, packed with heat and murderous intent, but perhaps her pokemon have gone soft. or perhaps they're scared of the woman with her fingers pressed to the ground, feeling its vibrations, and still tasting the smoke in the air. 

but while the magnezone had been obscured by the fire, while a barrier had separated it, calcifer had prepared. he ends his frivolous twister and rises; his throat swells. an angry roar expels as purple flames gather before him. 

electricity arches, sizzles; small explosions blast free and expel the fiery tornado around the magnezone. the zap cannon darts faster than most can perceive; calcifer's dragon pulse meets it halfway. 

the draconic energy swallows the brunt of the attack, but he is still struck in the chest. his wings falter and he plummets, and only when he's a few feet off the ground is he able to snap them open and stumble onto the dirt. 

he shakes his head, breathing labored, and curls his talons into fists.
