Is there anything more annoying that a question answered with another question?

It’s frustrating, and it makes Lia want to scream, but instead all she does is glare at Ana from across the hot spring.

What does she think?

That Ana is selfish. That Ana doesn’t care. That Ana would prefer it if they hadn’t ran into each other today.

Deep down, she knows those things probably aren’t true, but at the moment the latter is a sentiment she also shares: things would be better if they hadn’t seen each other again.

The thought hurts.

Holding back her anger, holding the tears, Lia takes a deep breath, and her next words come as no more than a whisper.

”Whatever. Forget about it...”

Making amends feels like an impossible task.

But, shouldn’t they at least try?

So much has been lost, and even if Ana actually doesn’t care, even if she wishes they hadn’t seen each other again, she’s still family, and family will always be important to Lia.

Sure, they may talk often and Lia may even visit from time to time, but it’s still not the same as having her here, is it? It’s not the same as having people she can rely on when she needs them. It’s not the same as having a support system.

Who can she rely on? Who supports her?

It’s what her family was to her in the past, and it’s not what Ana is in Lia’s eyes. Just like how Ana would probably never rely on her.

A sigh, one that comes heavy with frustration.

”It doesn’t matter.”

It does, but it’s easier to pretend like it doesn’t.

Will pushing for an answer do any good, or will it just push her even farther away?

It annoys Lia, and that annoyance shows itself in the way she looks at her older sister.

Why doesn’t it matter?

When the answer comes, it’s cold and sharp, and while it may not be accusatory, it’s said without a single doubt:

”Because I don’t matter to you, Ana.”

As Lia sees it, it’s the truth.

After all, what has Ana ever done to make her think otherwise?

What is a scoff going to do except piss Lia off even more? How is she supposed to come out of this not thinking that Ana can’t stand her and that she herself can’t stand Ana?

”All you do is ask questions, why can’t you just tell me how you feel like a normal fuckin’ person?”

Her own words are blunt and sharp, and there’s nothing but anger in her stare.

So far, there’s nothing nice about spending time with Ana again: no happiness, no familiar comfort, no nostalgia. None of the things that should perhaps be there when spending time with a sibling again after a long time. It’s all absent.

Maybe, if the multiverse exists, there is a universe out there where Lia and Ana are the sweetest sisters. One where they like spending time together, are loving, caring, and there are countless memories of good moments shared throughout their lives.

But that universe isn’t this one, and no matter how much Ana may say she cares, the words that follow contradict that.

Still, Lia sighs, once more pushing his anger aside and choosing to try.

Lia is still frustrated, she’s still annoyed, and there’s still a certain bitterness she feels about Ana’s words and actions. Yet, even if all this is true, there’s no denying that there’s relief in hearing that her older sister wants to feel connected to their family when she’s so obviously not.

The stars had aligned for them to meet here after so many years, and while Lia had initially thought it to be a terrible thing, maybe it’s not…

Even if she’s still annoyed.

”Okay… But you have to be willing to put in the effort.”

The effort to actually be there.

The effort to care and to stop running away from them.
