it seems as though miss alfric has realized his battle plan. from what he's read from her file, he knows enough about her specialty to assume that she knows what PETAL DANCE does; more importantly, what happens at the end of it. because of that, it makes the battle more pressing.

the HYDRO PUMP is not unexpected either. he allows the first, but that's all. "SKILL SWAP." he tells aromatisse just as the lombre comes to an end of its attack. with magical hand movements, aromatisse swaps her AROMA VEIL for the vaporeon's WATER ABSORB.

which renders lombre's next HYDRO PUMP useless.

a smile grows on alexander's face as he watches florges' next wave of PETAL DANCE fly towards the vaporeon. the lombre, like aromatisse, is support. what should be focused on is the main hitter.

the skill swap made for an unpleasant surprise, cait's features growing tight as a glimmer of frustration shone in her green-eyed gaze.

"lombre! go!"

as her vaporeon stared wide-eyed at the attack that was to come, her lombre utilized swift swim, intercepting the attack by taking the blow in the quadruped's place. and as the dual-type was sent tumbling head over heel, the bubble jet pokemon began to hastily prep another hydro pump.

"aurora beam!" cait corrected. "water-type moves are useless now!"

the vaporeon halted the attack and promptly released an aurora beam that propelled itself toward the supporting fairy.

"stand up, girl. you're not done yet."

these words were directed at lombre, whom was in the midst of recovering from the petal dance.

"nature power."

cait took the reigns, wanting to ensure that health wasn't restored to aromatisse. the lombre released the attack after a brief casting period, drawing power from her immediate surroundings before launching what appeared to be a swift at the fragrance pokemon.

an AURORA BEAM flies towards the supporting fairy. she makes a motion to attempt to dodge it but her leg fails her. the ice attack hits her leg, forming a solid block around it and takes her to the ground. pain starts to emanate but she doesn't let it stop her from doing her duty.

drawing up the will, she pushes herself off the ground and throws her body in the way of the SWIFT that targets the florges. after taking two attacks, the aromatisse comes close to fainting as she slowly recovers on the ground, breathing heavily.

florges continue her PETAL DANCE that flies towards vaporeon, ignoring lombre.

the petal dance had hit twice before and it was imperative that it was more effectively avoided this time around.

"both of you - aim your hydro pump toward the ground!"

it was a strange order, but one that was obeyed as the attack flowed toward their side of the field. the pressurized water sent the pokemon flying toward the air, their bodies flailing as they executed the dodge. lombre managed to land neatly enough, though his comrade's fall was far more awkwardly in comparison.

"va - ! "

the pokemon grimaced, the damage sustained preventing her from returning to her paws. she was alert, but she'd be unable to effectively dodge nor move for the duration of the battle.

aromatisse still isn't able to thaw out of the ice, but she has at the very least regained feeling in her foot enough to aid her to her feet. she stands on two, putting more weight on the unfrozen leg as she watches how miss alfric's two pokemon execute their dodges.

as impressive as it may have been, it left them vulnerable. but, thankfully, as florges begins to make a move, CONFUSION strikes her. she cries out in pain, clutching her head as she's unable to make an attack.

"the vaporeon, please."

alexander delivers an order almost begrudgingly, seeing as how the vaporeon is unable to defend itself. but, this is a battle, and he considers this good practice for what might happen up against a real enemy.

aromatisse gathers up all her will possible and summons forth a MOONBLAST.

vaporeon was taken advantage of the moment it was revealed she could no longer stand - and cait blamed herself for the single misstep that had resulted in her injury.

'we'll need to work on that landing in the near future.'

as her pokemon fell limp once struck by the fairy's potent attack, cait recalled her.

"it's up to you now, lombre."

"lom!"

lombre charged an ice beam, the attack shimmering as it manifested before her gaping maw. it flew true a second later, its power propelled toward the partially immobilized aromatisse.

vaporeon goes down but so does aromatisse. the power of the ICE BEAM overpowers what will she has left, causing her to collapse to the ground in exhaustion. by then the ice around her leg has frozen off, adding insult to injury as a red beam encapsulates her back into the safe confines of her pokeball.

it's a simple one-on-one battle. florges takes the stage, still cursed by CONFUSION, but tries her best to recuperate because she knows that she has to seize the advantage while it's still theirs.

"trap the lombre!"

words are registered as florges stomps her foot onto the ground. roots spurt out of the ground, hoping to catch the lombre with a GRASS KNOT but given her condition, the attack might not even land.

the grass knot proved successful, its leafy tendrils managing to wrap themselves around the lombre's limbs before forcing her to the ground. she'd release a pained grunt as her chin slammed into the floor, and would likely be nursing a bruise in the near future as a result.

"use hydro pump, lombre!"

rain dance was on its last legs now, the onslaught of rain having transitioned into a light drizzle. still, it managed to strengthen the dual-type's next attack by a decent enough margin.

any normal challenger and alexander would have compromised for them. but this is no normal challenger; this is mauville's new gym leader, cait alfric.

"you know what to do."

even in the face of possible defeat, alexander remains stoic and calm as he instructs his remaining pokemon. they've done this routine a few hundred times before. there florges stands, rooted in her position but she WISHES for the best.

tanking the damage, she persists through the pain and the force of the HYDRO PUMP. all she needs to do is survive lombre's next attack; if it will even get one.

MOON BLAST looks to close the battle.

it was lombre's inability to extract herself from the thick tangle of grass knot that seals her fate. she panics the moment that the moon blast is thrust toward her, and she flails uselessly before being struck. she almost immediately slumps over, the dual-type's expression dazed as she is abruptly robbed of her consciousness.

"we've lost."

cait was disappointed - but not at all surprised by the outcome of their match; because while she was making leaps and bounds in her training, there was still quite a bit of room left for improvement.

'we'll need to train more.'

she returned her defeated dual-type and dips her head respectfully in stone's direction. the rain dance has dissipated completely now, her bangs clinging to her forehead and her curls damp.

"thank you for the battle, sir," she said.

her smile returned, the young woman a little bit pleased that the match had been - at the very least - close.
