Clear skies, calm seas; a good day for offshore fishing.

While the recreational activities the yacht is often used for are more along the lines of parties, sunbathing, diving, and relaxing weekends enjoyed at sea, it does still make for quite an excellent vessel when it comes to fishing out in the deep blue of the Water Routes. With these as their charted course, they anchor down at a quiet spot – two deep sea fishing rods having been set up near the bow of the ship along with two comfortable chairs.

All that’s left is to wait, and while summer is now gone and the weather isn’t particularly warm, Mars still finds himself clad in a simple yet stylish shirt and swim shorts – aviator sunglasses resting atop of his head as if to top it all off.

It’s with one of those calm and confident smiles of his that he addresses the man next to him – THEO BECKETT, of all people.

What’s with Team Rocket and fishing? It almost seems funny to think about how the hobby he enjoys on occasion has become as if a constant in his life thanks to the criminal organization, although hopefully this time it will be purely for recreational purposes.

theo was nowhere near as fashionably dressed as mars was. if one were to google 'senior man in fishing gear stock photo', they'd see exactly what he was wearing.

his hat provided him protection against both the sun and mars' flashy outfit.

Is Mars ever not fashionably dressed? Such things have always mattered to him, and it’s not as if there’s much of a need for the usual ‘fishing attires’ when they’ll be on the boat and all implements they may need lay on deck within reach. Then again, let’s be honest, he’d probably find a way to make an outfit like that work if he needed to do such a thing…

Theo kind of looks like someone who’s going through an early midlife crisis, but he’s still somehow able to pull off the outfit – perhaps if only out of his sheer indifference.

Who knows, maybe he just really likes bucket hats and vests filled with one too many pockets or something. Mars sure isn’t about to go and judge him for it, since at least he’s well prepared for a fishing trip.

As he waits for a response, his gaze falls on the sea, watching the gentle waves for a short moment before returning his attention to their drinks.

while mars busied himself with getting their drinks (or would it be andrea?), theo found himself preparing his fishing rod, sifting through their bait before picking out a particular worm. it was fatter than the rest.

perfect.

he stuck a hook through it, then cast it out and into the sea.

It’s Mars himself who pours their drinks. For, aside from the couple of people required to pilot the yacht, no one but them had boarded it before leaving Slateport’s marina.

What need is there for his personal assistant on a fishing trip, after all? He’s not supposed to be here to work. Although, perhaps the main reason for the lack of Andrea’s presence is actually the simple fact that Mars knows his family would want her to report on any conversation she may hear him have with someone like one of Team Rocket’s higher ups.

It’s better to avoid situations like those.

The choice of whiskey is single malt scotch from the Galarian Crown Tundra, and it is soon that Mars returns with two glasses half filled with the dark amber liquid. They’re both set down on the small table by the chairs, only for him to then go inspect his own fishing rod – as if to make sure every part is properly connected and not too tight or too loose.

”How did you get into fishing, by the way? In my experience, not a lot of people have a lot of appreciation for it as a hobby.”

Who would have thought that they would have so much in common? Not Mars, at least, not when they act so differently. It’s not something he had anticipated at all, and yet it had become rather obvious when they had first spoken in Lavaridge.

Now it seems to be becoming even more obvious.

”Did you? Huh… I did too. Or more like he did the fishing and I’d just hang out with him. I was too young to do much else.”

It’s lightly that Mars chuckles at his own words while setting up his fishing rod and bait, a slight smile tugging at his lips. Over a decade of conditioning had led to him all too rarely speaking of his father, but as of late it seems to be much easier to do so when he does feel like talking about such things, and that sense of uneasiness that used to take hold of him is almost completely absent even if he knows he probably shouldn’t be speaking of this.

Shouldn’t, because those are his secrets, and the secrets of his family. A family that isn’t that of Martín del Mar.

The line is cast, and he goes to sit down, reaching for his own glass.

”Damn, out of all people, I didn’t expect you to ask me that.” Not like he’s not used to it, for a lot of people have actually asked him that since the new marketing campaigns began, but it’s still always amusing. ”It’s kind of both, in a way? The bank has existed for decades, so you could say the acronym is a coincidence. They used to worry about it making the bank seem less serious or unprofessional, but when I became CEO I decided to embrace it and use it for marketing. Took a hell of a lot of work to convince the board of directors, though.”

The damn board of directors. Among which is his grandfather, of all people. No matter how little he interacts with them, the mere thought of doing as much causes him to take a sip from his glass. Still, he smiles, his actual feelings never coming to light.

The bank will always be a topic about which Mars could go on for hours upon hours. Not just because it’s his job, but because despite having been originally given the position as no more than a front to aid the syndicate, he’s actually quite proud of everything he has accomplished ever since becoming CEO. It’s completely different from all of his other business endeavors.

And yet, as different as it may be, this is something about which he has enough sense to spare Theo a conversation. Perhaps if only because – while it may seem rather silly – his work with the bank and being a member of Team Rocket are two completely different aspects of his life that he’d rather keep as separate as possible. It’s an unrealistic expectation to have and Mars knows as much, since in the end, regardless of his preference, the two will always mingle in one way or another...

There’s no surprise when the change of topic comes, but he does look at Theo, curiosity expressing itself in the way eyebrows quirk just so slightly.

There are countless possibilities, and one by one, Mars lists them in his mind as he turns to look at the ever-still fishing rods, watching the line for even the slightest movement or sign of tension.

It’s not often that people take Mars by surprise, but out of all the places he may have expected this conversation to go when Theo mentioned having something he wanted to talk to him about, the prospect of a promotion had ranked pretty damn low.

Mars is usually quite good at reading people, and yet Theo continues to prove himself to be ever unpredictable. It makes him interesting and even fun to spend time with, but it also makes him dangerous and someone to be cautious around.

This is something Mars is all too aware of as he considers the question, his gaze fixed on the ocean.

”Mmm… It would have its benefits, that much is obvious, and I won’t deny that I have my reasons to be interested in the position. But… It’s also a lot of work, and I’m already pretty busy.”

It’s an honest answer, even if no details are given regarding his interest in being an admin. There’s no need for it, and can Theo even be trusted with those details?

Mars looks at him again, taking a sip from his glass.
