the maher family definitely are detached from one another, apart from cian and caden maher, but that's mostly because the two of them share too close a bond for even rocket to break. it's started to crack, however, even if he doesn't want to admit.

he watches as her bulbasaur emerges from its pokeball. his cacnea wanders over to greet it briefly.

"what about you, willow? what's your day-to-day look like usually?"

thistle sniffs at the cacnea and looks up to willow for direction. but her trainer's distracted, so a few exploratory vines poke out from within her bulb. she wiggles them over the cacnea's head with a tilt of her own.

willow raises a hand to the back of her neck and grins. "lots of work, really, but i don't mind. i took over the family business. rehabilitation center for grass-types with a small flower shop on the side. that and roman keep me plenty busy.

"i mean it, though," she says and then hmms, drawing out her phone. she pulls up the contact list and holds it out to cian. "it'd be nice to have you around. roman should get to know this side of his family."

cian's happy when she finally answers as it has been months since he'd ask his question. a part of him was wondering whether he'd ever get a response.

"i'm not sure what sort of an influence i'll have on the young boy, but..."

he takes her phone, punching in his number before taking a selfie from a really unflattering angle to set as his contact picture.

"as long as there's good food, i'll be there."

chuckling, he hands the phone back to her before turning to see the end of a battle. he throws a pokeball at the fallen vivillon.

she laughs. "good food, i can do." and she laughs at the picture he takes, too, thinking things are good. things are going to be good. with some positive influences in his life, hell, with some father figures, things are going to get better.

(she doesn't yet know how wrong she is, but crow does because she waited to respond to this thread for 6 months.)

a swablu and togekiss fly overhead, chirping at each other. she steps to the side, calling thistle back to her.

"i actually should be getting back. i'm glad we got in touch, cian. we'll see more of each other, i'm sure."

where willow mostly ignores the togekiss, cian decides to extend a berry up into the air in offering. it does a u-turn and returns to swoop the berry out of his hands, chirping in thanks before doing another u-turn to land on his shoulder.

just like that, he's earned a party member.
