Persuaded by the need to investigate a rumor, Katherine finds herself in one of the darker corners of PETALBURG WOODS. If sources were to be believed, then someone planted a couple of PASSHO BERRY trees in this section of the forest, but reaching said trees would prove to be no easy task.

Scornful and resentful bug-types and grass-types who’ve had their homes invaded far too many times protect the forest. And it just so happened that swarms of male Combee patrolled the nearby area.

With a Sableye by her side, Katherine examined the area from afar, not yet daring to step into their domain. Was this really a job fit for one person..?

Maybe not, but who could possibly help her?

Sparse sunlight filtered in through the canopy of leaves overhead. Underneath that dappled light, Luka made her merry way through Petalburg Woods, traipsing along without a care. She donned a light cotton dress and a sunhat— superfluous here, but essentials for berry-picking, as was the wicker basket that dangled from one arm.[break][break]

Aesthetics always trumped practicality, after all.[break][break]

A Teddiursa toddled at her side, cheeks stuffed with sweet, ripe berries. Pecha and oran, plucked from a few bushes that had been full to bursting. The grass types near the entrance to the woods were more hospitable than those deep within, more willing to share with those who asked politely and didn't exploit their generosity.[break][break]

But deeper in the woods the tress grew wild and the fauna more unforgiving. The buzzing of insect wings grew louder in this part of the forest, a hum that lingered in the air like television static. Luka skirted around the edge of hostile territory, wondering if perhaps she should turn back already. Her basket was nearly half full; that was enough of an accomplishment for one afternoon.[break][break]

Her mind made up, Luka turned to go. But a louder buzzing interrupted her, and she turned to see a Combee advancing on a figure some distance away in the woods. On instinct, Luka grabbed a berry from her basket and threw it in the bee's direction. Distracted, it followed the sound and gave Luka an opportunity to hurry over to the other woman's side, who thankfully wasn't being bothered by any other critters just yet. [break][break]

"Gosh, that was close." Worry danced in the slight crease between her brows. "The Pokémon around here seem unusually aggressive...sorry, um...it's dangerous to go alone, I think. D-do you need help, or...?[break][break]

Katherine and her Sableye exchanged a knowing look before her shoulders pulled backward into a slight shrug. Stranger or not, another set of hands couldn’t hurt, right? There were too many bees here to turn down someone's help.

“I think we could use it. Listen, the plan is simple.”
[break][break]
She is quick to take charge and formulate some sort of strategy. Luka would only have to adhere to her instructions, and that way, they could both avoid offering themselves for the Combees to feast on. “We get in, we take some of those berries - preferably without getting noticed - and then we leave. We don’t overstay, we don’t try to catch one of the pokemon, and we definitely don’t go for the honey.”

Yes, Katherine shot a look at the Teddiursa when she said that. So what?

A small spark of familiarity flickered at the back of her mind.[break][break]

Luka didn't remember many of the names of the other players in the death game contest she'd participated in. But she remembered faces and the prickling guilt that accompanied her for every decision in the game.[break][break]

She had selected Katherine Fairburne for a fake, exaggerated execution, even though someone else had gotten to her first. Luka prayed it wouldn't come up and that she would continue to go unrecognized, lest their encounter be marred by awkwardness.[break][break]

This benefited Katherine, for Luka was suddenly willing to do absolutely anything for the other woman to alleviate some of her guilt. She didn't even question what the berries were for.[break][break]

"I see," she replied quickly, lips pursed in thought. Standing nearby, her Teddiursa pouted.[break][break]

"Um...o-okay! Let's go then, quickly..." She eyed the swarm of bugs ahead with a mild apprehension. Some of them weren't so bad. Some bug types were even cute! But in a swarm like that, buzzing and flying about...[break][break]

Luka swallowed. She wanted to help, truly she did! But there were so many bugs![break][break]

Her Teddiursa was still at her side, but now tugged at the hem of her skirt with a gentle insistence. He wiggled his free arm about and pointed at his nose, then gestured towards the mass of trilling insects ahead of them.[break][break]

"Eh? What...oh!" Realization dawned in brightly verdant eyes. Luka fumbled for a few other Pokeballs she had brought with her, all made from carved pink apricorns. She released her Steenee and Cherrim, and beamed over at her companion.[break][break]

"Let me send these two ahead of us," she explained. "The, um, the smell from Cherrim's flower attracts bug types, I think...and Steenee can use her sweet scent to draw some more of them away. If we can break up the swarm, it should be a lot safer!"[break][break]

The two grass types nodded in understanding and hurried off, seeking shelter a good distance away. After a minute or two, a sweet perfume began to waft through the forest; hopefully it would be strong enough to lure some of the Combee away.

Surprisingly, there’s a lack of judgement from Katherine’s side. She recognizes that the Combees had no ill-will in this ordeal. The two of them - Luka and her - were the invaders. They sought to steal the bugs’ prized berries. However, right or wrong, she was more than willing to look past such simplistic ideals so long as the berries were obtained.

Passho berries were always in high-demand, after all. Merely finding some rather than growing them yourself lifts quite the tedious work from one’s back.
[break][break]
“Good thinking. We need a good distraction.”
[break][break]
And by the sound of it, the one devised by Luka was of the highest caliber. Sableye follows after the two in tow, eager to help Luka’s partners by guiding the perfume along a soft, chilly breeze of ICY WIND.
[break][break]
And lo and behold, the plan comes to fruition.
[break][break]
The pokemon are drawn to the source of the scent. The first Combee to catch a whiff of the perfume leads the other after it. They follow under the false, sweet promise of the most bountiful field of flowers. Misguided and misled, they desert their home one-by-one.
[break][break]
But not for long. Now, the race begins.
[break][break]
“We have a minute. Or at best… Two. Be quick, be safe… But most importantly?”
[break][break]
A pause.
[break][break]
“Don’t try to be a hero.”
[break][break]
The remainder of the swarm seemed to stay near the hive, far too focused to desert it for flowers. They were the Vespiqueen’s attending bees. There to protect the Queen, their buzzing was ferocious and endless. Pheromones of the Queen kept them on edge, more focused than their hive-mates.

But such an opposition failed to deter Katherine. She will have the berries. Instead of merely making her way slowly, as she had until now, she rushes there. Her steps grow quicker until she's fully running, darting in without any intent to hold back or halt down.
[break][break]
And once she's in close proximity to the attending bees, the buzzing stops. For a moment, the world grows still - just as each of the bees directs its attention to the woman. She didn't belong there, and that was reason enough to attack.

They move in a practised formation, stingers revealed, flying with the sole intent of impaling Katherine then and there.
[break][break]
But the question remains: would luka chêne try to be a hero?

Their plan goes off, surprisingly, without a hitch.[break][break]

It's mostly thanks to her Pokémon of course, and the assistance of Katherine's Sableye. But Luka's a little astounded, though still mightily pleased, that her idea actually has merit. The Combee float off towards an imaginary meadow, entranced by the sweet scents that reach her nose as well. Honestly, Luka can't blame them. It smells divine.[break][break]

Most importantly it leaves the hive more exposed, though not unguarded. "Right, um, okay. Got it! I'll keep that in mind." Luka says with a nod, bracing herself for the most difficult plan.[break][break]

Katherine's warning is clearly understood. But will it stop her? Not likely.[break][break]

Luka tiptoes behind the woman, then breaks into a sprint to match her pace. She keeps a wary eye on the defending Combee, aware that they're probably not going to let the pair pass through without a fight. And when a half dozen stingers turn on them, she knows right there that she won't be able to hold up her end of the deal.[break][break]

Will Luka try to be a hero? Kind of.[break][break]

Her Beautifly is released with a bright flash, the light and sparkles from the seal attached to her love ball temporarily (and accidentally) stunning a few of the closest bees. With a hurried command the butterfly flaps her wings, Protect creating a barrier between Katherine and the advancing Combee. Stingers make contact but do not penetrate, though it's clear that the barrier won't last long.
