ameena abadi's query meets with a less than satisfactory answer. Luka doesn't know much about tera crystals, and can't begin to try and connect the dots between them and the strange masks being built. "Maybe...m-maybe they all do something different? The blue one showed us good things...so what if the others show something else?"[break][break]

It's a weak hypothesis, but it's all she can come up with. After a bit more idle chatter, and insisting along with Diana Cavendish that she's fine on the floor, ameena abadi is granted the bed while the other two women try to make themselves comfortable. Surprisingly, despite the cold hard stone beneath her, sleep comes to Luka easily.[break][break]

When she wakes up in another world, Luka's first reaction is no longer surprise, but a dull acceptance. However, it's quickly clear that this isn't someplace new, but a dream. It's so vivid though, and no attempt at pinching herself can wake her up. She's also not alone; but unlike the dream world she'd been in a few months ago, all the other inhabitants seem to be unwilling prisoners like herself.[break][break]

As she wanders the city, a familiar voice floats towards her. Though Luka still doesn't know Diana Cavendish at all, she can at least recognize her cellmate. But before they can locate the third member of their trio, Remiel Calcifet and Elise Calcifet find them.[break][break]

It's funny; ages ago, she might have felt relieved Remiel was there, or horrified that he had to suffer too. Now all she feels is a kind of blank acceptance— not indifference, but his influence on her has waned. Perhaps that's for the best.[break][break]

The four of them hold court under Zekrom's macabre chandelier, swapping stories of their confinements and answering questions. Luka replies to Remiel's tale with her own stories of the UGLY ward and their captor, though doesn't explain her vision in the chamber of desires just yet.[break][break]

As she speaks she fiddles absently with the ring finger of her left hand, as though toying with a ring that isn't there.[break][break]

"They...t-the other wards didn't do as well," she says softly. "Ours was...w-we followed orders the best, I suppose. So they were punished instead." [break][break]

Even though she hadn't explicitly taken part, she still feels guilty about it. "I didn't vote, so I don't know...it's awful though, isn't it? I felt so bad for them." And yet she knows that come tomorrow, should they still wake up in the same horrid cell, she'll do anything to avoid being the ward that gets punished.[break][break]

"Do you think—" she pauses, as though afraid of being overheard. By what, she isn't sure. "D-do you think there's any way out of here?"[break][break]

Luka braces herself to be punished for abstaining, just as Navy is, but it never comes. She wonders, rather naively, if they all could have abstained and spared their fellow prisoners further torment. It sickens her to know how easily some of the others had betrayed the Dummy ward.[break][break]

This is a foolish thought. She knows that had they all remained silent, they would have been punished too. It’s easy to think of herself as morally superior; but in the end, she’s just a coward. Navy had been far more noble than she ever managed.[break][break]

Even so, disquiet settles in her gut as they’re transported to their so-called reward. Faces reveal themselves as they enter: she recognizes a few, to her dismay. John Sullivan, Yuina Higashi, jayden cross, Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki, and annalise henderson, among others. Her two inmates are strangers, but they’re both lovely, and ameena abadi’s compliment manages to bring the ghost of a smile to chapped lips.[break][break]

”Neither do you,” she replies quietly. ”You’re…Ameena? A-and so you must be Diana Cavendish-“[break][break]

She quiets rather abruptly as the line moves, and she’s pulled forwards towards the mask. Though apprehensive, those who have looked into it before seem unharmed; in fact, some look elated. Surely it’s all a fantasy, but the promise of something good amongst this horror show is too enticing for her to protest against.[break][break]

The visions that she sees are relatively simple. And that is, perhaps, what makes them so devastatingly enticing. Luka sees herself, but she’s not alone. There’s a diamond on her finger and a figure holding her. Her family- her father- and countless friends are gathered around her. There’s no conflict, no strife, no hint of endless warring factions or existential horrors. The scene is so peaceful and serene that it almost brings her to tears.[break][break]

She staggers back from it, but the simple relief she had felt does not fade quickly. She’s still in a bit of a daze as they’re shuffled off towards the showers, the face of her imagined beloved still fresh in her mind; a perfect amalgamation of all her simple-minded daydreams.[break][break]

It’s the spray of hot water that snaps her out of it, though only slightly. The others around her disrobe, and there’s no real shame in it, but Luka keeps her uniform on as they shower. It’s comforting, somehow, to cling to the last shreds of dignity that a few threadbare pieces of clothing can provide. She keeps her eyes on the floor, watching scalding water swirl around her feet, and scrubs at the fabric along with her skin.[break][break]

A fragment of the toxic chain has wrapped around her ring finger. She tries her best to ignore it.[break][break]

Broken spirits make for the best prisoners. As she polishes Tera shards to a gleaming shine, Luka wonders if this is the crux that had finally broken her, or if it had happened a long time ago.[break][break]

She wears pessimism poorly, like an ill-fitting suit. And so, as is her nature, she starts to whistle to her cellmates as they work in a futile attempt to boost morale. Perhaps, then, it’s complacency that makes her an ideal captive.[break][break]

However, the rewards for their good behavior are just as twisted as the punishment. Panic rises as Luka realizes they have to make a choice, and while she privately agrees with the likes of Navy and Yuina Higashi, the words of dissent stick in her throat.[break][break]

How can she condemn one group to save another? How can she volunteer this group to suffer, when so many are actively opposed? And selfishly-so selfishly that it makes her sick— she doesn’t want to suffer either. She’s seen the brutality their captors are capable of, and it scares her. She talks a big game, but when the chips fall, she’s a coward.[break][break]

She had sacrificed herself so willingly when she’d been with @remiel two summers ago, and their digital bodies had been offered up without restraint. What had changed since then? Was it simply a product of her hardships, or was it her?[break][break]

”I…” She wants to say take us instead! but does she? Can she?[break][break]

In the end, as it turns out, she can say nothing. And perhaps the most cowardly answer of all.[break][break]

Her body screams at her to turn away. And yet, as the scene unfolds in front of them Luka remains rooted in place, eyes wide with horror.[break][break]

She’s seen what happens to those who eat the mochi, but the alternative is far worse. So she doesn’t protest when ameena abadi and Diana Cavendish eat it, even though she wants to. And her cellmate is right. Perhaps it’s because she hasn’t eaten for a while, but the mochi is delicious.[break][break]

”…it’s good.”[break][break]

What would happen if she spat it back out? Her fate would likely be no different from the first victim. Perhaps they can figure out some way to counteract the mochi’s effects? It’s a better option than being sliced to ribbons.[break][break]

The others in her cell are speaking again, but she barely hears them. The words are far-off and vague, like a voice heard while dreaming. It’s only the mention of the bird, preening smugly in front of them, that brings her back to attention.[break][break]

”I…” She tears her gaze away from the mangled remains on the floor and tries to focus on the bird again. Though the surroundings are splattered with gore, their feathers remain pristine. It’s hard for her to think— her head is swimming, and her stomach churns unpleasantly. But survival instinct forces a memory forward; that of a carved statue crushed by Helios not long ago.[break][break]

”I’ve never seen it in person, no,” she says, pulling away from the bars as far as her chain will allow. ”But I think, um…there was a statue of one, I think.” As she speaks she starts to work, methodically polishing tera crystals with her threadbare prison wear. The repetitive swirl is oddly soothing. ”A woman had one of these chains…s-she was worshipping it, I think. It was like she was possessed.”[break][break]

Details swim to the surface with every pass of cloth over rock. She’s quite certain that the creature carved in stone was the same that stands in front of their cells now, mocking them.[break][break]

”Smashing the statue freed that woman…but I-I don’t know if it’ll be that easy this time around.” It’s clear that of the three of them, she’s the one with the most information on this toxic chain phenomenon. It’s an odd feeling, and a responsibility she isn’t exactly comfortable with. ”I, um. T-the rangers have been dealing with this kind of thing a lot, lately. I’m not, like…w-well, I don’t know that much about it…but maybe we can figure this thing out together, y-yeah?”[break][break]

Does stuffing as many berries as one can fit in their mouth count as helping?[break][break]

Luka’s Dedenne certainly thinks so.[break][break]

The little creature scampers underfoot, her cheeks bulging comically from all the berries she’s crammed into each pouch. Thanks to the team’s efforts, this is a bountiful harvest— so surely no one will notice a few berries missing from the pile, right?[break][break]

However, her antics eventually attract the attention of BARNABY FINCH’s Ursaring, whose unnerving stare has the hamster recoiling in fear. She squeaks out a little apology and drops some of the damp berries into the dirt— useless for harvest, but good enough to plant new trees with.[break][break]

For the rest of the day she plays the dutiful helper, berries carefully clutched in her paws instead of her mouth. But at the end of the day, just before Luka comes to pick her up, her cheek pouch bulges a little more than usual…

Being tied up in bed is nothing new, but it’s not fun this time around.[break][break]

Luka is the last of her cell to wake, groggy and only semi-conscious as her eyes adjust to darkness and the smell of damp and mold. She tries to sit, only to feel a weight pressing against her throat. Looking down, she vaguely recognizes the toxic chain that binds her— the same had poisoned so many innocents this past month. The same that had burst from her own chest months ago.[break][break]

Her first instinct is to panic. Her breath comes shallow, her heart bursting against her ribs with a painful thrum. Her cellmates are a firsthand audience to a few pathetic whimpers, though she tries her best to swallow her fear and focus, focus.[break][break]

Sadly, it’s the utterance by Diana Cavendish that snaps her out of it, if only because the name seems to haunt her everywhere. She wants to ask why this other woman is calling for Remiel Calcifet, but holds her tongue. If the prince has made yet another conquest, it’s none of her business.[break][break]

Besides, now is not the time for petty drama.[break][break]

Instead she tries to focus on the other two women in her cell, using them to ground herself. Misery loves company; she’s upset that others are suffering the same fate, but it’s at least reassuring to not be alone.[break][break]

”I aml.”/b] she answers ameena abadi weakly, testing her voice against the constraints of the chain. Shaking slightly, she sits up.[break][break]

”These chains…i-it was a while ago, but there was one…i-in my heart, I think, and it…” She shakes her head. ”S-sorry, that doesn’t make sense. What I mean is, um…t-they’ve been happening all around Hoenn, I think.”[break][break]

But this— the cell, the guards, the masks— this is all new. Luka’s legs tremble like a faun’s as she pushes herself off the bed and wanders towards the bars, peering out at the dim corridor in front of them.[break][break]

”Ah, I’m…I-I’m Luka, by the way.” Introductions almost seem silly at a time like this, but there’s a slight comfort in the formality of it. ”Do either of you know why we’re here?”

”Ah…hurry, hurry! I think we’re almost there…”[break][break]

Ghostly hooves beat against the forest floor as Luka urges her Spectrier forwards. Their target has the advantage of flight, able to zip through the trees far faster by air than on the unsteady ground. If it weren’t for the toxic chain around their neck, Luka is quite certain the little fairy would have already outrun them.[break][break]

The woods feel strange here; wrong, somehow. It’s almost certainly because of the chain and the toxic pokemon affected by it. As they zip past, Spectrier tosses their head and aims shadow balls at attacking pokemon, but all they do is cut a swath through the hoard. It’ll take a far bigger effort to defeat them entirely.[break][break]

In Luka’s arms, one of her Shaymin looks nervously about, a pecha berry clutched in their front paws. Since this whole toxic affair had started, Luka had taken to carrying more berries around with her; and good thing, too! It’s sure to come in handy now, and it seems that many of her fellow League members have had the same idea.[break][break]

Her Shaymin calls out to the Celebi, who responds with a distressed but musical cry. They’re both guardians of the forest, in their own ways; it makes sense that they understand each other. Luka tucks a Gracedia flower behind her little hedgehog’s ear, and they take off through the sky as well, berry in mouth as an offering to the time fairy.[break][break]

The pecha berry is taken swiftly, but gratefully. Though Celebi doesn’t stick around, Luka likes to think that the chimes she hears are ones of thanks, and she replies with a little wave before she reins in her Spectrier and takes stock of the chaos around them.[break][break]

Right. They still have work to do.[break][break]

Oh no…[break][break]

She’d just gotten her nails done![break][break]

Luka sighs as she inspects her index finger. The cute daisy design she’d gotten done is chipped and mangled now. How awful![break][break]

She has half a mind to glare over at the Sneasler, whose commotion had caused her to get distracted and damage the nail…but it’s not their fault, not really. She sighs again and takes a seat away from the fray, pulling out a file as she tries to at least save the nail shape.[break][break]

After a few minutes, however, one of the Sneasler approaches. She looks interested. Another joins her, and another, until Luka holds up the file and the first Sneasler nods. And so, quite bafflingly, Luka takes over the position of nail tech for an afternoon, polishing and shaping Sneasler claws and even applying some of the nail polish she keeps in her bag![break][break]

A full set of claws uses up the whole bottle, but it’s fine…the Sneasler seem happy, at least![break][break]

(OPTIONAL): though well suited to the dummy ward, luka's come to terms with that aspect of herself, more or less. however, one of her greatest fears is appearing unappealing in both appearance and personality, and being placed in the ugly ward would be the worst option for her <3
