You live everywhere and you don’t belong anywhere. Johto, Kalos, Unova, Sinnoh- as a child you bounce between them all, clinging to your mother’s skirt as you introduce yourself once again to new classmates. Your father is in Interpol, though you don’t know quite what that means, only that papa is important and you need to support him, even if it means uprooting your childhood over and over again.[break][break]

When you finally settle in Kalos for good, your peers have mostly moved on to battling and training, leaving home to challenge the league. They want to be the very best (like no one ever was). You only have a Munna to help with your troubled sleep and no desire to pursue the accolades of a championship: you decide to stay home and cherish the time you have with your family, choosing stability over adventure and sweetness over success.[break][break]

Linguistics is a superfluous skill but you study it anyway. Every language from every region you’ve lived in, hours spent pouring over dictionaries when you’re not immersed in another shoujo manga. You love the way different words feel on your tongue, love the sound of dialects and local slang. Once heard, always remembered; mimicry becomes a party trick, you’re a mockingbird for sport.[break][break]

You grow up. Your existence is simple but strawberry sweet: a star-shower of blossoms, of dew-like pearls, fruitfulness, beauty, life, rapture and fragrance. You have a cushy internship and for the first time you have friends, real friends. You have love and then you don’t. The taste in your mouth is bittersweet, but it makes you feel alive. You’d be content to live like this forever.[break][break]

Until you can’t. Until one day the phone rings and papa doesn’t come home. His Blaziken returns a week later, and with him comes news of your father’s fate. You never get to see him again. The walls of your charming childhood crumble into dust at your feet, and you have no idea how to pick up the pieces. How does one move on from such a thing? For a long time you don’t, and the days that drag on are bleak and dreary. Blaziken is just as angry and devastated as you, prone to outbursts and violence and you want to help him, but you can barely help yourself.[break][break]

But despite everything, you remain a softening kindness reflected back on an unkind world. No matter what other hardships befall you, you keep your head up, saccharine smiles fixed in place. You have known sadness and you wouldn’t wish it on anyone else: you decide to live your life for the sake of others, always. Their happiness is your happiness and maybe it’s a band-aid solution to the pain and loneliness inside your heart, but it’s something, and you hold onto that little spark of hope like a lifeline.[break][break]

Eventually you decide it’s time for a change of pace. You have a ragtag team of baby Pokemon at your side and figure they probably deserve a half-decent trainer, and maybe with some experience under your belt Blaziken will finally listen to you. Packing up and moving to Hoenn based on a whim sounds mad, but you do it anyway. You have no idea what you’re doing, but that’s part of the appeal; everything is new and exciting, and you finally have something to look forward to again. Thrilling battles, meeting new Pokemon and friends- you want to experience it all even if you're just a fledgling trainer, and you just can't wait to get started!
