his jacket shifts as something moves inside it, crawling further up his body before resting on his shoulder. its pink head barely pokes out as its jelly-like substance wiggles with each step niko takes. kinda like one would HORSE RIDING.

stepping into another aisle, he browses through the canned goods the grocery store has to offer.

There’s always something annoying about grocery shopping at unfamiliar stores; about having to search through aisle upon aisle and sometimes still not being able to find some very specific items in her shopping list. It’s why it’s not something she does often, and also why she hadn’t really intended to buy much when stepping into the grocery store at Verdanturf.

Just a few supplies for her mission and nothing more.

And yet, it still takes her way too long because she has to look through just about every aisle…

Eventually, she finds herself among rows of cans, some of them advertising their content to be things as odd as unfezant meat. Weird. It would be better to just ask for directions, wouldn’t it?

”Hey, sorry to bother you, do you know in what aisle the cookies and stuff are?”

If only she weren’t just looking at the back of the person she’s talking to, then maybe she would realize sooner...

but the moment he turns, recognition hits, and his expression falters for just a second.

he raises a bruised hand, gesturing left.

"like, two aisles down that way."

turning, he drops whatever can of food into his basket before walking away.

She recognizes him, even if it’s been years.

Maybe because she could have never forgotten, or maybe because she saw him all too recently in the dream mist that had overtaken the Star Soirée. He looks different; he looks different from what he did the last time they spoke, and he also looks different from the illusion that had been shown to her. But even if he has changed, it’s still with no hesitation that she calls his name.

What is this? Some sort of destiny thing? The stars aligning so that they just so happen to be at the same grocery store and so that she decides to ask him for help out of all the people there?

a name he hasn't heard in so many years. it even sounds foreign to him, as though it no longer fits whatever person he's become. no nostalgia comes from it.

the ditto on his shoulder rotates, eyes shifting back to peer at sol while niko continues to walk away, not stopping to even look back. he turns left, heading towards the cashier with an almost empty basket of groceries.

If he had bothered with telling her she’s wrong, then maybe Sol would have questioned herself; maybe she would have thought he’s just some stranger who looks and sounds way too similar to the brother she still misses everyday. There was once a time when Sol had loved her brother more than she loved anyone in the world. A time when she had hoped and prayed that he’d be safe and that he hadn’t suffered the same fate suffered by most of those who were declared M.I.A back at Kanto. She had suffered when she lost him. She had missed him every single day.

Because of all those feeling is that she cries, and because of them it’s also that she knows it’s him even if there’s nothing familiar about the coldness with which he looks at her – that coldness that cuts like a sharp blade.

Even if they once cared for each other, things had never been perfect between them. Things had never been perfect in their family, honestly, and perhaps that’s exactly why he had left.

She wouldn’t blame him for it, if it weren’t for the fact that he had left without saying goodbye, without even explaining things to her…

He had let them all live with the fear that he might have died.

Of course she follows after him when he heads out, leaving her own groceries behind. A jar of pumpkin spice that had been intended for a pie breaks when the basket is dropped, spilling its content, and although she should probably pay for that, Sol ignores it.

Shouldn’t this be a happy reunion? Shouldn’t they be glad to see each other?

Because he really is a coward? Because she would have told him to stay? Because she would have been hurt? Perhaps because she would have hated him forever if she knew he actually had left her.

She looks at him, and in those teary eyes of hers, there’s nothing but anger and resentment. Those feelings that seep out thanks to all the pain she has bottled up over the years. There’s cracks on the glass now, all of it threatening to come out in an outburst.
