Though lately they've been laxing up on the rules, his parents had a strict outline for Aedan: School, extracurricular activities, and then straight home. No running off into the wilds.[break][break]

But Grandpa knew better than to shelter him. He'd grown up seeing just as many strange things, and knew that one way or another, 'sh#t happens'. It didn't matter if you were shut away in your house or not; if it wanted to find you, it did. And Grandpa knew it was better to be prepared for such eventualities than to hide from them...[break][break]

Or maybe he was just pandering to his favorite grandson.[break][break]

"Woah... Grandpa wasn't kiddin'..." He could see it from his window on the second story; a depression in the fields, scores of crops gone to waste. Well, not entirely to waste; Grandpa let the wild pokemon pick at the scraps, hoping they'd leave the rest alone for when their harvest came around. Perhaps that insight was why he'd told Aedan not to go wandering around the fields, especially at night.[break][break]

But it just sounded like an adventure waiting for him.[break][break]

The old ranch door creaked shut despite his best efforts, as Aedan emerged from the house clad in a track jacket, pants and dingy old boots his Grandpa loaned him. A flashlight pointed towards the rows of corn but couldn't pierce the thicket, making for an eerie jaunt as he approached the fields, pushing through the first few rows hesitantly. With every step he regained some of his lost courage...

Night falls with a quiet hum and a full moon's glow blankets the land, the endless sea of stars serving as her only guide tonight. She wields nothing but a torchlight and her chipped bravery, her ever faithful Luxray watching for threats as he prowls by her side.

As they continue to move through the paths carved into the crops, Eris can't help but turn the flashlight up to shine upon her face, giggling when Reiner noticeably flinches from the sight. "Don't be such a scaredy-cat!" She's amused but that doesn't stop her from offering him a pat on the back. "Maybe if we make things a little creepier, the ghosts will come out to play!"

That is, if these were even caused by ghosts. Her gait turns into a skip, the chilling night air filled with the haunting tunes of her humming.

It takes off in an abrupt flurry of fluttering wings, the sudden movement and noise sending a jolt through him that froze the young lad stiff. Realizing the disturbance for what it was, he sighs with relief, taking a moment to laugh at how easily he was startled... C'mon man, you're sixteen now. You're basically an adult![break][break]

...But then another sound rings over the fields. A lullaby, but in the pitch of a lament or even a warning. Ominous words floated over the overgrowth and filled him with a healthy dose of apprehension. What was going on out there?[break][break]

Like his Grandpa would say to him: Only one way to find out for sure.[break][break]

Gulping down the lump in his throat, he pushes forward warily while calling out the the mystery siren: "H-hello...? Is anybody out there? This is private property...!" Whether they respected that fact was another matter entirely.

Pupils dilate at a low rumbling sound on his flank before he's thrust forward, unable even to stagger forward awkwardly when his foot catches on a fallen cornstalk. Instead he tumbles forward, hands held out to brace just a little too late to stop himself. He feels the pile of dried foliage pressing against his cheek, his palms sore from the impact after his knees settle against the earth. "Euuuuoohh..."[break][break]

Rolling over onto his back, his flashlight streaks across two sets of eyes.[break][break]

With a small push, she sends him tumbling through the reeds as if he's been thrown by something massive. His knees smack hard against the ground and leaves plaster against his figure like an abandoned scarecrow, his mind running wild as he flails with his only source of light.

The Luxray snorts at her comment, gently baring his fangs at the boy to scare him a little more. Had he really been some kind of ravenous wolf, he would have spared the spooks and gone straight for the feast. But this stranger probably doesn't have enough experience with the supernatural to know that.

"Sh-shut up...!! This is private property!" He almost didn't believe Eris when she spoke of the Luxray's appetite. The creature had a lean, fierce disposition suited to a man-eater. Or maybe it was the way its eyes reminded him of a Lycanroc, a voracious predator known to stalk the farms in this area. "...What're you doing here?"

A momentary weakness, one showed off to a stranger to boot - All things considered, he was probably right to be a little mad in addressing her! But that wouldn't stop Eris from continuing to mess around a little.

It's a bit bewildering to find a kid in your cornfield (now he knew how his grandpa felt) but he eventually came to his senses. "Alright, alright, but what're you really doin'? Cuz my grandpa will have a fit if he thinks yer damagin' the fields, or..." He looked around...[break][break]

"Well, I guess the fields are pretty much done in already..." Now that he was looking around, he wondered what could've done all this. It hardly looked done by hand, and he couldn't imagine a contraption capable of it. Her little fable tugged at possibilities engineered by the mind; but they were incredulous thoughts... By now he was lost in thought, eyes carefully surveying the meticulous decimation of the fields.[break][break]

"...Whaddaya s'pose would do this...?" Maybe it was a trainer's idea of a prank?

She tilts her head to the left, shifting her weight onto one leg and standing on it for a moment, before hopping back onto her two feet to regain her balance. "Maybe it was actually a ghostie."

After all, the last time she'd bore witness to such a mess, they had ended up being chased by a Trevenant, right? Even Reiner seems to shudder at the thought, nervously pawing at the ground when something seems to rustle nearby. But Eris being Eris will never turn down the opportunity to satisfy her curiosity, a small smile tugging at the ends of her lips as she leads the way forwards.

Though the ground is littered with dried leaves, her steps leave no sounds to draw the unseen beasts. Her flashlight swings outwards a little, illuminating the path ahead, then to the side, just enough for her to check on her newfound companion. When the crops ahead begin to rustle, she stops but is equally as quick to relax when she sees that Reiner remains undisturbed. A few steps further and the ground beneath them begins to shake,, soil churning upwards and outwards as a sharp head pokes right out of the ground.

Not quite what she expected but definitely more welcome than a rampaging Trevenant. Grinning, Eis can't help but look to Aeden for his reaction.

As they traipse through the dark blindly, Aedan remains anxious of the real threat, which is his father coming out hollering about him being out past curfew. But instead of worrying, he tries to keep his eyes forward. "I guess you're right..."[break][break]

As they stumble around, the ground ahead of them churns suddenly, demanding their attention. For a moment his heart stops and his mind blanks, but it is not so unfamiliar a sound or sight. Even as the Drillbur emerges, Aedan would've already anticipated as much, not that he seemed entirely thrilled or at ease about it.[break][break]

"Pap won't be too happy about that..." Drillbur were a problem around here, although Aedan didn't mind if they scavenged the unusable crops. But that didn't mean they should get too comfortable. But without a pokemon to combat it, all he could do was scowl as it grabbed at a cob of corn before retreating into its hiding hole.[break][break]

"Are you satisfied yet?" They couldn't stay out here forever.

"Mmm... yeah!" Though he isn't direct in his wording, he's definitely pushing her towards leaving - A momma's kid, perhaps. Carefully pulling herself onto Reiner's back, Eris' gaze hovers over his flicking ears then turns back to Aedan with a slight sheen of concern. Or maybe, she's peering into the distance behind him... But she doesn't care to mention anything about it, a gentle pat on Reiner's shoulder signalling their time to go. "Good luck with chasing to Drilbur out later today then, I guess?"

Though, the Drilbur may not actually be the real problem around these parts... Oh well, it didn't seem too aggressive, so maybe things would work out! She'd just tell him some other day, when he wasn't so worked up and all.
