Gavin doesn't know much about toxicology; it hadn't been his specialization. He'd narrowed his own focus to evolution and paleontology, the latter being relegated to the backburner when he'd fallen in with Rocket's ranks.

Now, he rarely has time for science at all.

It would be sad if he allowed himself to dwell on what Rocket had taken from him. Instead, he dedicates himself to pursuing their goals, great or small.

This one was the latter but had good potential.

"You think the serum will work?"

An amber gaze shifts to Ceri Glynn, questioning. On the metal table of the lab, a sedated Slowking drools.

How the hell had things turned out like this?

Ceri has always been a confident person, and when it comes to Toxicology, that confidence may be somewhat justified by the way she has always excelled academically. Her GPA is to be envied, and yet, she knows well enough that she has a lot left to learn, and being no more than a lab assistant, never in a million years would she have imagined she’d be working on an experiment alone with no less than one of Team Rocket’s underbosses.

She has never been particularly anxious, but it’s a nerve-wracking situation even for her.
[break][break]
It could be a great opportunity, or it could mean disaster.
[break][break]
It all depends on her.
[break][break]
”Ah… It’s difficult to say, since we’re basically trying to replicate a natural mutation, no?” While she speaks, she prepares the serum in question, it’s main component being a concentration of Galarica – sap, leaf extract, anything that would be found in a twig. ”Kantonian Slowpoke and Slowking haven’t gone through generations of eating mainly of Galarica twigs, so while the serum should cause a chemical reaction with the Shellder’s saliva in theory... in practice we just don’t know if it will be enough. It’s like trying to find the balance between poisoning them enough to cause the reaction, but not enough for it to be lethal.”

Once this is said, she pauses, and while it’s faint, rosy hues colour her cheeks, for she hopes she’s not sounding too preachy or too unsure of her own hypothesis – even if she could excitedly rant for hours about such things.

”Sorry if I talk too much, it’s a bad habit.” With a chuckle and a quiet sigh, she returns her attention to the serum, never daring to look at the underboss.

Her anxiety is felt in the way she averts her gaze, the amount she speaks and her apology thereafter. Though Gavin's stoic countenance provides little insight into his thoughts, his tone isn't unpleasant when he answers.

"No need apologize for enthusiasm. Science should be exciting."

It should be a passion, he thinks, not a chore.

"We've been experimenting on-and-off with different methods to expedite the process with varying results. Death of the subject is," he frowns at the drooling Slowking, "preferably avoided, but it wouldn't be the first casualty."

In his own, distant way, he's asking Ceri Glynn not to worry.

Really, he's here out of personal interest. He doesn't work for the science division, not any more, but he can't help but to pop in from time to time to check up on his old colleagues and what they're working on.

"Your accent," he says, while taking notes on their subject's health. "Circhester?"

It's strange to hear it again, from someone who isn't a relative.

He’s right, it is exciting, and even if his words may not have been meant to be particularly reassuring, they do reassure her indeed. She even smiles, and her own gaze drifts towards the drooling Slowking.

”I think it should be fine, pokémon eat things that have strange effects on them all the time… Although some are more resistant to toxins than others.” Like Snorlax, for example. A Snorlax could eat a whole Muk and the pokémon that’s usually considered to be a living biohazard would do nothing to it.

Now being much calmer, Ceri checks her notes; scribbles regarding Slowking anatomy being side-by-side with potential instructions to create the serum. It should almost be done.

Gavin’s question distracts her, however, for a pang of nostalgia comes at the mention of her hometown. This time, she looks at him, azure eyes meeting amber ones.

”Oh… Yes! I grew up there, moved here when I was a teen.” She smiles, thoughts of the snowy streets of Circhester filling her mind. ”I’m surprised you knew it’s from Circhester specifically, most people can’t tell beyond it being Galarian.”

Which means he's probably Galarian as well.

The assumption comes to mind, but she doesn't voice it.

Gavin's lips pull into a frown as he recalls his Sylveon sinking its teeth into a monster's oozing hide.

"They will, won't they?"

The same could be said for certain humans, too, like Chu-e Choi. He'd also taken a mouthful of monster, though it hadn't been quite so deliberate. Gavin brushes the bad memories aside as he refocuses on their work.

Amber eyes blink as they lock with azure, curious and calm.

"I spent a few years in Circhester studying the Galarian fossil Pokemon." It wasn't technically false, though it had been more than a few. "Backwards things, they are, but that makes them all the more interesting."

He continues to monitor their patient, filling in graphs and observations.

”Fossils?” Her interest is piqued, because just like many, when Ceri was a kid she had a few years when she was completely obsessed with all things prehistoric. Although, did she ever really outgrow it? ”I’ve always wondered what the species those came from must have looked like, though the existence of hybrids creates interesting possibilities for sure… Like what sorts of hybrids could exist between modern pokémon.”

In a way, couldn’t it be argued that Slowking are their own sort of weird hybrid? A Shellder bites a Slowpoke and tada… Slowking!

Evolution can be really weird like that, and that’s the whole reason why creating the serum she swirls in a small beaker is much more complicated than what she’d like. It could work, or it could not. Too many variables.

"Mhm." Gavin doesn't look up from his notes, his gaze focused behind the glasses perched on his nose. "I was a scientist myself, before the promotion. Studied whatever Rocket told me to, of course, but my chosen field was paleontology."

He brushes blond hair from his eyes and makes another note.

"If fossils weren't so hard to come by, I might experiment more myself." He laughs, soft. "But a specimen in good enough condition to be revived shouldn't be wasted on the hopes of creating a hybrid species. No matter how interesting..."

She mentions the serum, and Gavin looks up from his notes to nod.

"Excellent. The sedative I've administered should last more than long enough, then."

He slides his notes across the table.

"Just in case there's anything that might conflict with your serum."

”That sounds like a huge change, I imagine you must really miss the lab… sir.” Caught up in the excitement of talking about both science and Galar, it had been easy to dismiss the rank difference between them, so the correction is swiftly made the moment she realizes her mistake. After all, colleagues or not, she’s still only a grunt, a student, a lab assistant, and there’s still much left to learn no matter how much she may already know...

Which is exactly why she’d never put an opportunity like this to waste.

”Oh, thank you.” Smiling faintly, she turns to look at the notes, carefully reading each line in search of something she may not have accounted for. A serum that doesn’t work with common anesthetics would be problematic given the nature of Team Rocket’s work. ”Looks like it’s all in order.

As expected.
[break][break]
All that’s left is to introduce the serum into the Slowking’s bloodstream and see what happens, for which she reaches for a syringe. In theory, it should work, but with so many unknown variables perhaps it’s also a matter of the stars aligning and having faith and what not. Ceri has never been good at believing in things like those.

”Should we proceed?”

The question is asked calmly, focused on her work as she is, but in her eyes shimmers her own anticipation and thrill – as if she can’t wait to see what happens to this poor Slowking.

There are days he misses it terribly, and days he doesn't think about science at all. For the glory of Rocket, no matter what the cost. They had needed a leader, and so a leader he'd become.

"Sometimes," he shrugs. "But I experiment in my own time, still."

He'd chosen his Sootopolis home not for its view, beautiful though it was, but for the sturdiness of the stone beneath. They'd built his laboratory into that very stone, its entrance concealed and its presence absent from the floorplans.

He nods, glad when everything's in order.

He can recognize the shine in her eyes, the fervor, and so he doesn't delay further. He steps back and gestures to their subject.

"Go ahead."

He prepares another large needle, poised to intervene should something go awry.

While Ceri would love to ask what sort of experiments the Rocket underboss performs in his own time, it just doesn’t seem appropriate for her to pry, and even in all of her impulsiveness she knows not to do as much.

So, it’s a good thing that the questions flee her mind soon enough, being replaced by one too many theories about what might happen the moment the bright orange liquid that fills her syringe enters the Slowking’s bloodstream.
[break][break]
It doesn’t take long for them to find out either, because it’s with a slight nod that she proceeds the moment she’s given the go ahead to do as much – the serum being injected into the drip that has kept the pokémon sedated all this time.
[break][break]
At first, there are no signs, but she watches carefully, taking detailed notes of the Slowking’s state. It’s when its skin begins to acquire a purplish shade that she puts her pen down, staring in amazement. ”It’s working…” Her words are but a whisper, as if not wanting to jinx it, and then…
[break][break]
Then the Slowking cries out in pain.
[break][break]
The Shellder’s fangs, which before were barely visible, are now much more pronounced, digging deeper as if it were trying to swallow the Slowking whole from the head down. There's a thought of how it make sense, since a Galarian Slowking’s Shellder covers most of its head, but blood is drawn by it, dripping down onto the table. Pained, the Slowking reaches up, trying to pull the Shellder off its head, but the latter does not give in, and fangs dig deeper.

It would probably be a terrifying sight to some, fitting of some horror movie, but Ceri watches in silence as it happens, notes being taken as if she were unaffected by it.

”Hmm… I guess it’s too sudden after all…”

What a shame.

A fervent excitement is reflected in the amber of Gavin's eyes, Rocket's underboss gripping the edge of the table with anticipation as he watches the clear liquid in the drip get flushed away by vibrant orange.

Then a cry of pain, a splash of blood.

Gavin, too, seems indifferent to their subject's suffering.

Between long fingers he grips a method to rectify that pain, put the creature out of its misery, but as the Slowking has not resorted to violence toward either of them, Gavin merely watches it struggle against the Shellder's fangs.

Blood pools, spreads.

There's a thud as the Slowking goes limp.

"You're getting somewhere," he observes. "The results are promising."

Shame they'd wasted a Slowking to find them out, though.
