or so he heard once in a movie. was it oceans eleven? twelve? thirteen? fourteen? fifteen? he lost count, really.

he follows, still, keeping close to her (though, not really by choice, as nina would likely not let him linger) and absorbing the chaos around him in. nina smells wonderful, and it contrasted greatly to the slots as they pass. it smelled like piss, or worse — was that man wearing a diaper?

they went along together, and she kept near him, not running from his closeness. they were a couple, after all. [break][break]

they strode past questionable smells and addiction, towards the pit. She pointed to a table. ”like that.” [break][break]

her eyes wandered, looking for a particular suit and tie before heading for a random table, unoccupied except for the dealer. [break][break]

”just watch how it works for now,” she told valentine, before they arrived.[break][break]

”hi.” she set bills down on the felt, and smiled lightly at her too-close company, voice bright and sweet. ”good luck to us.” [break][break]

chips were given. she made her bet, and cards were dealt. it was quick, and the dealer won. they went again, with the same result. on the third go, however, nina was dealt a winning hand. blackjack. there was clearly no card counting going on.

if she was inclined to believe valentine and his out-of-the-ass beliefs, perhaps they were in more danger than they both thought. "very well, i shall remain diligent." and he does, for the most part. he can't help but have his attention pulled occasionally by the sights, sounds and smells that prickle his senses. even if some of them were not good.

after a good while, the idea of the game becomes apparent to him. "i do believe i have it," he gives his partner the comfortable confirmation. "it's quite simple, really."

he takes a seat, smiling (creepily, some would say) at the dealer.

"hit me!" it's too enthusastic, but the kids got spirit. see, counting cards wasn't an exact science. it was a matter of keeping a reliable memory, and well, a bit of guesswork. you couldn't start and just expect to win.

it takes a few hands, and surprisingly, valentine is decent. he plays it safe, before he gets an understanding of what he's up against. then, he starts to push it a bit.

"hit me!" again, though this time, he hits high - a twenty. then an eighteen. and so on, and so forth.

by the time an hour has come and gone, he's made considerable gains, and a small crowd has formed.

"you were right," he says, looking at his beautiful companion, "this is fun!"

it was probably best not to question it, really. without any explanation, after seeing the game merely played as intended, he had pieced together exactly what to do. she could see it in him. [break][break]

"i am, aren't i?" he smiles, wide and broad, as he collects his next hand. over the course of the game the dealer had grown more and more stoic, as if intentionally shutting themselves off from showing any sign of emotion. he'd noticed it rather quickly, but wrote it off as a man tempering himself to play the game better.

a group of suits, so adequately named due to their expensive yet similar looking attire, approaches the table. the one in the lead wore sunglasses, despite being inside. perhaps he had astigmatism? hm.
