it was a domino effect. [break][break]
as the ditto transformed, nina yelped loudly, “shit!” perhaps alerting anyone nearby first of their presence. shortly after, though, was the roar. it was a perfect set-up, really, but also definitely a test of reflexes.[break][break]
she glanced at niko with wide eyes, and then, without missing a beat, let out a horror movie-level scream before ripping off through the trees.[break][break]
“ursaring! there’s a--” she feigned a pant when she came into view, having quickly worked up panicked tears. there was a gasp, as she bent with hands on knees briefly. “run! there’s an ursaring.” then, a loud, dramatic sob as she brought reddened hands to her face, “it ate my herdier!”[break][break]
“we have to run! drop the berries, it’ll go after you!”[break][break]
she sprinted past them, bounding through the grass to lead the way towards nowhere in particular.[break][break]
meanwhile, the togepi she’d left behind looked up at niko and smiled sweetly.

she's good.

that's all he can say, really, as she puts on an act and sells it perfectly. for a moment, even he believes her, though it quickly passes as she sprints past them, bringing the couple along with her.

with the basket of berries now dropped and ripe for the picking, all niko has to do is stroll up.

he meets little togepi's gaze, smiles, then bends down to pick it up, propping it on his shoulder.

"come on, little one."

and so, whistling, he heads on over to pick up the basket, then heads off a little bit deeper into the berry farm.

the togepi was quickly enjoying itself, settling into the crook of niko's neck.[break][break]
it would be a good five, six minutes before she’d parted ways with the couple, explaining that she was heading to locate her friend on the other side of the farm—which was true.[break][break]
she walked back, only to find that said friend was gone. she wouldn’t have looked for him, except for one thing.[break][break]
“damn.”[break][break]

with a sigh and an adjustment of the purse still over her shoulder, she delved deeper into the farm as well to look for him.[break][break]
“come on, niko. i wanna go home,” she muttered.[break][break]
eventually, she decided to text him.[break][break]

as the whistling dies down, it's in turn replaced with idle small talk with the togepi to help pass the time as he continues to pick more berries.

"does she feed you well?"

regardless of its response, he bites into a berry, then offers it up to the small togepi on his shoulder.

his phone buzzes in his pocket, and after reading it, he chomps down on the berry, holding it in his mouth while he types a response.

coincidentally enough, behind her is his ditto, who slides along the ground towards her.

togepi took the berry with a shrill, grateful chirp in niko’s ear. however, nina did feed it well, fully superstitious that if she slipped on her care for it at all, her luck would suffer.[break][break]
the message came through, and she glanced down before turning as instructed to nothing but air. until she looked down. [break][break]
“oh. you.”[break][break]
she pursed her lips.[break][break]
“thanks for that, i guess.”[break][break]
with a sigh, she did a turn, squinting through trees. she was sure that she’d see niko and her togepi somewhere. he could see her, after all.

'hElLo!' is what the ditto would say if it could speak. alas, it can't, so all it does is offer nina a bobbly wave as its body moves like the ocean.

eventually, niko steps out into the open, approaching with her togekiss still on his shoulder.

nina stared a moment, and then began to roll her shoulders at the ditto in a similar fashion, only to jump when niko appeared out of nowhere. there was no more rolling, only a hint of embarrassment. [break][break]
and there was togepi, riding on his shoulder, as expected and hoped for. [break][break]
“togepi~,” she cooed appreciatively. lucky little shit. her voice dropped an octave or two back to normal when addressing him, then. “i always need to be paid more, niko.”[break][break]
she did fishie lips at the togepi as her hands went out with waggling long-nailed fingers to retrieve it from him, making incoherent baby noises all the while. [break][break]
“i feed her fine. what do you mean?”

though he doesn't comment on it, the sight of her rolling her shoulders like his ditto is really amusing. he stifles a chuckle as she reaches for her togepi, and in turn, he brings an arm down low for ditto to slide up and along to take togepi's place on his shoulder.

"i dunno about that. she kept trying to steal my berries."

she wasn’t sure what sort of response she’d been expecting. she sighed lightly, holding her egg up to the air and eliciting another delighted priii! from it. [break][break]
“were you stealing berries?” her voice was very goochy-goo again.[break][break]
regardless, she knew she fed it enough. if she didn’t, her luck was damned. she researched that shit.[break][break]
“thanks. thought you just said i needed to work harder.”[break][break]
her togepi was back out of the air and close to her chest and she looked back up at him, too-long sleeves obscuring her stained hands around her apparently thieving baby.
