the softer side she'd seen from him in the privacy of his kitchen, wasn't present. he was all professional today. at his feet, a pyroar chews on an apricorn soundlessly.

that gabriel had set her up with someone else (THEO BECKETT ) had made her nervous. how was she meant to serve them both? surely at some point, something between the two would conflict, and she would be left to decide between nothing but wrong answers on what to do. [break][break]
it had seemed for a while that this would be a nonissue, though, as she hadn’t been in contact with gabriel. maybe theo had worked something out with him, but as little as she saw him either, there were few opportunities to ask about it. did gabriel even know she was in rocket now?[break][break]
today, after months of radio silence, she had gotten a call.[break][break]
all-consuming anxiety had nearly caused her to quiver at the ankles in her heels as she walked to meet him. had she done something wrong?[break][break]
when she arrived, she was quiet. her face, skin rosy from the chill of autumn wind, looked cautious.[break][break]
“hi, gabe. it has. i hope everyone’s well.”[break][break]
she chewed lightly on the inside of her cheek, regarding him before deciding she had stared too long, and her eyes floated elsewhere. the business-like tone of his voice gave little in the way of good or bad, but he was already assigning her a job. no further word of her absence than simply ’been a while’. she did her best to quell her nerves and focus on the task. maybe this was a good sign.[break][break]
“i don’t mean to question you or anything, but i can’t really charm pokémon like i can people. is there any reason in particular you want me to do this?”[break][break]
her words didn’t contain a lick of the sarcastic or playful edge she might’ve taken with NIKO MANNER . the level of familiarity she had once had with gabriel had clearly diminished.

"i'm less concerned about the pokemon, than i am about the people inside the cafe. a porygon was released, and the league suspects it's being used to commit cyber crimes. so i will need your charm to find out who's responsible."

she'd met the time off gabriel, alone in the kitchen, and they bonded slightly over one of his favorite hobbies. he'd offered her a contact in rocket to expand her business, and a place in his guest home.

none of that hospitality was present in his gaze. it bore down on her, every bit the business man, and ceo, that he was.

nina pressed a fake smile at him, which was always utterly convincing in her case. maybe he wasn’t infallible, but she’d still rather not question him if at all avoidable.[break][break]

as he divulged about the issue, her stare shifted onto the building again. she wondered how she was going to go about it. typically, ideas simply popped into her head. perhaps it was the nerves today, bogging her down, tried as she might to shake free of them.[break][break]

“of course, gabriel. i’m just…” still thinking. “going.” [break][break]

before she’d gotten a couple of steps, she added, “i’ll text you if anything happens.” a given, really, but it had been a while. [break][break]

she made her way in, casting a quick glance around. she’d never been in one of these places. dividers obscured screens, and made it generally difficult to peek without being obvious.[break][break]

patience and a hot-temper would describe gabriel perfectly, and he exercises at least one of them, as he allows nina to enter a minute or so before him.

when he does stride inside, his massive form causes a few people to turn and look on at him. he ignores them, approaching the counter with a lifted chin and square shoulders.

gabriel makes a show of holding his phone, letting the defenseless electronic flit lazily between his fingers as he waited for something sweeter than the bitter black liquid.

a name was called and mispronounced. it wasn’t her real name, anyways. [break][break]
she went to take the latte, welcoming the warmth that spread into her palm through the cardboard. it was getting cooler out lately, and the cold still hadn’t left her hands.[break][break]
not sure what else to do, she went to sit at a desk. her bag was shrugged off her shoulder and one of her phones removed from its leather confines. she set it to lean against the tower, the black mirror angled to keep an eye on gabriel still. [break][break]
she logged on easily, pleased that there was no password, and began clicking on things at random.

shortly afterwards, he too is called to get his coffee. the name, the face, and the size of the man, clear indicators who he was. while most didn't know him as the head of a conglomurate, many knew him as a running-councilman. heads turned as he approached the counter, thanked the woman, and accepted his beverage.

moving to a table not crowded with a pc setup, he sits for a moment, before leaving both phone and drink there as he moves off to the bathroom.

nina clicked away. she’d rarely been around computers in her life, and still hadn’t purchased one of her own. while curious, her attention remained mostly on gabriel’s reflection. quickly, she began to put together the set-up.[break][break]
the man was noted. casually, she picked up her phone again, opening the camera app and angling it to appear to be taking a selfie.[break][break]
she wasn’t sure if this was a good move, but she figured if the man took it and ran, they’d at least know what he looked like.

under the guise of throwing away trash in a nearby bin, the strange man begins to unzip, ever so slightly, the hoodie he was wearing. from inside, the blocky snout of a porygon pokes out.

it does nothing seemingly, yet the reflection in gabe's phone shows a rapid-fire of images, then finally, a loading bar.

once satisfied, he zips the sweater back up, and moves for the door.

as diligent as they both were, what both nina and gabe had overlooked was one simple fact: expertise. the strange man hadn't simply hacked gabriel's phone, but cloned it. less than thirty seconds after nina's text is sent the stranger in-front of her stops dead, turning around with a quick and wild expression. whether or not he recognizes her or not doesn't matter.

gabriel emerges from the door, large ape-like digits clamping around his phone beneath a furrowed brow. eyes catch nina just as the figure in front of them runs, and his voice roars out. "after him!" the council-man elect summons two pyroars that quickly set-off in a chase.

it was too quick to tell if she met eyes with him or not. gabriel’s bellowing voice spurred her to action and she ran, quick on her feet and skillfully nimble through congested sidewalk traffic. [break][break]

shit. what was she supposed to do when and if she caught him? the pyroar would surely beat her there anyways…[break][break]

”wait! sir! please stop! i think i have your wallet!” and thus perhaps his identity. a lie, of course, but one that would, with luck, cause him to slow and second-guess himself if only for a moment, giving the pyroars at least a small cut of distance.
