How the hell had things ended up like this?

As stoic, cold, and aloof as Percy may usually be, he has actually always liked children. But does he like them enough to not mind ending up stuck babysitting his boss’ kids on a nice Saturday night? No, because as he quickly came to realize the moment he found himself alone with them: his boss’ kids are absolute brats.

Five year olds.

Twins.

Reckless, disobedient, and full of endless energy.

It took him a total of thirty minutes to realize he was going to need back up for this, and after scrolling through his phone contacts, the name of a single person who lived nearby and who seemed suitable enough appeared on the screen as if the answer to all his unspoken prayers: luka chêne

”Thanks for coming on such short notice.” When opening the door, the greeting comes with a sigh, the sound of his words almost drowned out by that of children laughing, playing, and of something breaking. ”Oh, Arceus… You better come in.”

Luka had just settled in for a movie night when the text came.[break][break]

She almost didn't check it. She was snuggled up with a few members of her team, already in pajamas and under a plush blanket. Cozy and comfortable, with a few snacks and her favorite rom-com playing— very little could have dragged her from her couch right now.[break][break]

But a desperate plea from an acquaintance (friend?) was enough, apparently.[break][break]

It still takes her nearly twenty minutes to arrive; even if it's just babysitting, she has to make herself presentable. Luka doesn't say anything about the haggard look on Percival's face when he opens the door, just smiles and steps over the threshold.[break][break]

"It's fine, it's fine!" Luka reassures with a wave of her hand. "I wasn't doing much any- oh, dear." She winces at the crash and hurries further inside, removing her shoes before she goes to survey the damage.[break][break]

Two children blink up at her, each of them holding half of a broken toy truck. Tiny chins wobble for a moment, and then the shouting starts.[break][break]

She broke it![break] So? You started it! [break]Give it back![break]No, it's mine![break][break]

"Woah, woah! Come on guys, there's no need to fight," Luka tries to intervene, but the children seem wholly uninterested in her. "H-how about we play a game instead, okay?"

Most of the time, Percival is a man known to be notoriously composed. Few things in life can get a reaction out of him while on the job, and even less would manage to actually get him flustered. And yet, on this night, here he is: the sleeves of a button-up rolled up to his elbows, and his hair definitely not looking as perfectly combed as it usually is. He looks like he needs five cups of coffee.

The pair of causes for this lie within the lavish home, fighting over a broken toy.
[break][break]
”What did I tell you about fighting? Your parents are going to be mad you broke that.” His tone is calm yet stern, eyes of a silvery grey staring down at the children.
[break][break]
But, Percy, it was her fault!
[break]You tried to take it from me!
[break]It’s my toy!
[break]No it’s not!
[break][break]
He sighs, turning to Luka with a look that almost seems to say ”See what I have to deal with?” just as one of the children tries to take the broken half of the truck from the other’s hands by blunt force alone.

How in the world are they going to put an end to this madness? Honestly, he hopes Luka will have the answer.

”What game did you have in mind?”

These kids are...a lot. Cute, still! But a lot. Luka silently passes Percival the takeaway coffee she'd brought for him— she doesn't know his tastes well, but figured getting it black was a safe bet. She offers a sympathetic smile along with it, and a little thumbs up. They can do this![break][break]

Of course, the kids don't want to make it easy. Luka has no official babysitter status to lord over their heads, and they're still ignoring her as she walks up to them. They only pay her any mind when she takes a seat beside them, offering up enough of a distraction to at least stall their squabbling.[break][break]

One of the children, a girl, stares at Luka and then glances back over at Percival.[break][break]

Why did you bring your dumb girlfriend?[break]
Ha-hah! Percy's gonna get cooties![break]
Ewww! Don't be stupid! Cooties aren't real![break][break]

"Eh? N-no, he's not...I'm Monsieur Percival's friend," Luka tries to explain with a frantic shake of her head. "He was telling me how cute and wonderful you two are, so I just had to come see for myself!" A hopeful smile spreads across her pinkened face, and she glances at Percival for some backup.[break][break]

The children still seem rather indifferent towards her, though the girl preens a bit at the compliment.[break][break]

"So," Luka tries again, "I thought we could all play a game together! Do you guys like cards? Dress-up? Or we could try—"[break][break]

I WANTED TO PLAY TRUCKS![break]
Well you broke it, dummy![break]
No! You broke it! I hate you!

It’s a sweet gesture. Kind. The sort of thing he’d expect from someone like her.

In truth, Percy will always be one to prefer tea over coffee and is very particular about the former (let’s blame the Galarian blood running through his veins), but the gesture is appreciated nevertheless, and the caffeine is certainly much needed. ”Thank you.” Cupping the drink in his hands, he relishes in the warmth coming from it, his gaze then once again falling on both Luka and the children.

Why did you bring your dumb girlfriend?

”She’s not my girlfriend.” Perhaps somewhere in the multiverse there might one day be a wacky alternative reality where that could be the case, but here, in Hoenn, could they even call themselves more than acquaintances? Friends? Yeah, Friends probably works best. ”She’s a friend who’s here to help because you two are being little brats.”

He smirks, and the kids complain:

Percy, that’s mean!
[break]I’m not a brat, she is!
[break]No, you!
[break][break]
A quiet chuckle is followed by a sigh, and Percy also sits down. ”Luka’s right, let’s play a game. Since you broke the truck, you’ll have to pick something else.”

It’s the girl that jumps up then.

Let’s play house!
[break]WHAT?!
[break][break]
”Okay, house it is.” Mostly because it’s the first proper suggestion they give, but what does that even entail? Children pretending to be grown ups… Kind of sweet, if anything.

"House!" Luka claps her hands together and nods. "That sounds perfect! What a great idea."[break][break]

She glances over at Percival again and gives him a wink. While the children are busy assigning themselves roles she quickly picks up the broken truck and tucks it away, certain that they'll forget about it now that they're properly distracted. And at least they aren't shouting anymore...this is good! Hopefully the rest of the night will go just as smoothly.[break][break]

I get to be the mommy! Percy has to be the dad.[break]Why?[break]Because he's like, fifty! Duh![break][break][break]

Luka laughs despite herself and casts Percival a look that's meant to be sympathetic. Only she can't quite conceal the amusement that dances in her eyes.[break][break]

"That sounds nice! But what about your brother?"[break][break]

The little girl is busy clinging to Percy's arm, but peeks out to frown over at Luka, for some reason. She gives a dismissive shrug.[break][break]

He can be our baby.[break]I'm not a baby![break]Are too! You have to be the baby, there's always a baby![break][break]

Apparently, it's a compelling argument, and the other child agrees. Luka points to herself. "And what about me?"[break][break]

Hmm...you can be the cat.

Percy would love to pretend as if he’s above getting offended by the words of a child, and he surely will do as much – brushing it all off with a slight smirk and a quirked brow. But, if we’re being completely honest here, that one hit his pride.

At least it’s not as bad as Luka’s role, though.

Then again, doesn't that fit her just right, considering those ads she has done for POG Bank where she always wears Meowth-like ears?

What? Of course he has seen those! A journalist has to watch TV, alright…

”I think that suits Luka well, she’d make a cute cat.”

He shoots Luka an ever so slightly teasing smile, but it’s only then that Percy realises that he doesn’t have a clue how to play house. After all, it’s the sort of game his sisters tried to force him to play as a kid, and that he avoided at all cost.

Luka shoots Percy her best attempt at a glare. It's not very convincing. Her lips are pursed, and her eyes narrow in an approximation of how a furious person might behave. [break][break]

He’s not wrong, but of course the kids take his assessment and run with it. In the span of just a minute Luka has been given her government assigned cat name (Sprinkles) and resigns herself to her fate. The older child- the girl- smugly pats her on the head while addressing Percival. [break][break]

“You’re daddy! You just gotta do daddy things! Like come home from work and talk about stonks…and you gotta kiss mommy! That’s what daddies do! Mmm…and then we talk about the bills, yeah! Elec- electwicity is high this month, mhm…” She hums thoughtfully. “And then, and then! We make dinner, um…and our baby can play with Sprinkles…”[break][break]

[break][break]

Two hours and an inordinate amount of meowing later, and Luka is completely exhausted. But, thankfully, so are the kids. Slumped over on the sofa, half-asleep, they finally allow the house a moment’s peace. [break][break]

Half empty cartons of juice and snack packs litter the floor, and Luka tiptoes around them as she flits to Percy’s side. A finger is raised to her smiling lips and her voice is barely above a whisper.[break][break]

“Think we can get them to bed without a fuss?”
