Pace hadn't actually put too much work into actually, er, working since he'd settled in Hoenn. Now and then there was something to do, but a lot of his time was preoccupied with flirting with his fellow rangers, or anybody else he happened to come across. Sadly, everybody else took the whole ranger thing very seriously, and today they were all busy with actual jobs, and so Pace had to make his way all the way down near Oldale to help out with some bullshit.[break][break]

Or... it seemed like bullshit until he got there.[break][break]

In truth, this shit was actually weird as all hell. The trampled stalks of corn flattened against the soil were snapped and bent as though something very heavy had clumsily stamped them down, but laid out so intricately it was like something was trying to... what, write? Draw? Phone home? Between the flattened corn and the huge round footprints in the soil underneath, Pace was pretty sure whatever had done all of this was very big. And... also nowhere to be seen.[break][break]

This would've been a lot easier to do if he'd thought of borrowing a horse to ride. He'd gotten a good birds-eye view on his flight here, but now work had to be done on the ground level.[break][break]

Luckily, there was a rustling to the left, just between a clump of stalks, that Pace was almost sure was the culprit. Or at least, a pokémon that might be causing trouble. With quiet steps, then a sudden lurch - Pace ever the one to not care about burning his hand on a wild Ponyta or somesuch thing - he reached through the corn stalks and grabbed the mysterious creature obscured on the other side.[break][break]

Every single time Percy made the mistake of thinking shit in Hoenn couldn’t get any weirder, the region found a new way of proving him wrong. In just the past few months there had been Groudon’s rampage and the claims of the scenery changing at Mt. Chimney, that whole mess with dimensions apparently shifting during Team Rocket’s forceful takeover of Sootopolis, and even that meteor falling in Mossdeep’s observatory during the Star Soirée, with its nightmare-inducing Dream Mist and murderous Unown...

And now there are crop circles too?!
[break][break]
He wouldn’t believe it if he weren’t seeing it with his own eyes, and he sure hadn’t when his boss told him to travel all the way to Oldale to check it out. It sounded like the sort of thing some kid would make up and report to HNN as a prank, and yet here it is… a goddamn crop circle in the middle of a field.

”Wisp, take footage of it while I go interview the farmers.” The words are spoken to a Rotom Drone floating nearby, and while this is a good plan, it quickly finds itself sabotaged when he’s yanked into the corn stalks.

Unimpressed and mildly annoyed, he looks down at his “attacker”, eyes of a silvery grey meeting golden ones.

Pace could've almost sworn he heard words just before grabbing the foul beast that's attacking the field. Footage... interview...[break][break]

All of a sudden, he was pulling a human-shaped beast towards himself. Shock horror, indeed, that it turned out to actually be a human! One that seemed, eh... frustrated at the situation, you could say.[break][break]

Pace let go of the other guy quite quickly and looked up the few inches he was taller than him. At this point, gold met silver and Pace realised that not only was his victim a person, not a vicious beast, but he was also very good looking. He would be even more so if he didn't look like he'd gone through a hedge backwards, or just emerged from a giant pile of leaves.[break][break]

"...Hey there" Accompanied with that award-winning Mahmoud smile, almost forgetting that he'd just yanked the poor guy through corn.[break][break]

"Ah- what I'm doing, right - I'm a ranger. I'm here to investigate the crop circles. I imagine you're..." He looked him up and down for a moment "...far too handsome to be being pulled through cornstalks?" He laughed and offered him his hand. [break][break]

"I'm Pace. Sorry about the whole yanking thing. I thought you might be the perpetrator"

Oh, what’s that? For a second there, Percy is almost certain he threw up a little in his mouth, the sheer nausea he feels from being suddenly grabbed and dragged through the stalks being only intensified by the stranger’s blatant flirting.

See, Percy has always had a thing for personal space, and having someone suddenly break into his without a warning is not appreciated.

In fact, he takes a step back the moment he’s free, long fingers smoothing down the fabric of his suit after having gone through such an ordeal. ”I see.” He stares at the other’s hand for a few seconds before deciding to take it, a firm handshake being given when meeting his gaze once again. ”Percival Munn, HNN.”

”So you’re here hunting for the culprit, then? What do the rangers think might have caused it?”
[break][break]
Right into interview mode, of course, his own hunt always being one for answers and the truth. Nothing less, nothing more. No matter how handsome and flirtatious his interviewee.

After a quick stare, the stranger shook Pace's hand, however briefly. Pace smiled back at him, holding his gaze confidently. "Percival Munn. Nice to meet you - if only it had been under better circumstances, huh?" A grin full of perfect teeth, and a hand pushed through his hair, like Pace had suddenly metamorphosed into a poster of a popular teenage boy singer. He just needed the frosted tips.[break][break]

"The rangers as a whole are placing their bets on a ghost or psychic type, maybe something disturbed or upset and trying to express itself. As for me... I'm pretty much on the same page, but whatever it is, it's gotta be big to leave footprints like those, hm?"[break][break]

As he spoke, he gestured down to the great pits left in the path of trampled corn, scars from the brute force of giant feet. "See how far into the earth they go, but wide apart? It's moving slowly, but with enough strength to leave prints this deep. Strength, or weight" He beams. For someone who's mind was full of ass and tits all day, Pace did his homework.[break][break]

"Any ideas, Mr. Munn?" He raised a brow. It was a challenge - and also flirtation, as most things with Pace inevitably ended up.

Is this guy a ranger or some former member of a boy band that never quite made it to fame so now he has no choice but to live reminiscing on his “glory days”? There’s something ever so annoying about people who act overly aware of how good-looking they are, unashamed in their pride – it’s the sort of confidence that unsettles him, the kind of thing Percy himself will never have.

That’s exactly why he finds himself glad when this Pace guy moves on from his attempts at flirting and actually answers his question, gaze as grey as clouds of storm falling upon the trampled corns. ”That would make sense, although as far as I’m aware most Psychic types move through levitation, and ghosts tend to be of little weight.”
[break][break]
Percy has no reason to be an expert in Psychic types (he’s no Mars, after all), but he does know his ghosts, and so, when the challenge is presented, an eyebrow is raised as he looks at Pace – aloof as ever.

”If you’re thinking ghost, it sounds like you might be dealing with a Golurk, but I’m not here to do your job.”

Percival's whole cool-calm-and-collected thing might've been grating as hell if it wasn't so hot.[break][break]

Pace grinned at his answer - so snarky. "Golurk indeed. That was my thoughts exactly. Next time the rangers have an opening, you should go in for it. I bet you'd look great in uniform" Probably even better out of it, too.[break][break]

"You want some good footage and shit for your news, right? You should come with me. I wouldn't feel right letting a civilian wander off when there might be danger about, you know?" He smirks, raising a brow at him, gold crinkling and a beaming smile in his eyes.[break][break]

He walked away, then, from the wall of corn that Percy had been unceremoniously pulled through and towards the "path" of the crop circle, intending to follow it. As he does so, he unclips a pokéball and lets out his trusty Nedjem to help them sniff out the great, stomping ground-type that had been causing all this trouble.[break][break]

The Eevee, ever as extroverted as her owner, busied herself snuffling at the bottoms of Percival trouser legs, before tippy-tapping her way to one of the great footprints and sniffing there instead.[break][break]

"C'mon, Mr. Munn. Let's get that scoop, huh? I'll even hold your hand, if you worry you'll get lost"

The words ”No thank you, I value my work too much to be underpaid.” briefly cross his mind, but reminding himself that he’s supposed to be working and thus supposed to act with utter professionalism, Percy bites them back. Everyone knows ranger salaries are a joke, so while the idea of spending most of his time in the wilderness and away from people is eternally appealing, why would he ever want to do that?

”What makes you think I can’t take care of myself?” While cold as ever, he sounds almost offended, because surely a Golurk can’t be that difficult to deal with, right? In fact, Percy has a Golett of his own, so he technically should be more than familiar with the Gound type’s antics and all that. And yet, he follows along, because surely a ranger would know exactly what to do in this sort of situation, no?

What to do is apparently calling out a small Eevee much alike Percy’s own, the sight of it coming close to him being so endearing that it brings the smallest of smiles to his lips. It’s distracting, and being as such, it causes Pace’s next flirtatious suggestion to catch him off guard...

”Huh? ...I’m not a child.” This time, he does actually sound offended, and while he looks ahead and keeps on walking, the faintest of blushes colours his cheeks. Percy acts as if he doesn’t notice this, obviously.

If Percy had made some quip about the pay, Pace would've probably laughed - he agreed, after all. The money he made doing all of this was pennies compared to what he made back at Sinnoh, but considering the money from the rangers wasn't blood money, it was okay being less.[break][break]

"I never said that. But what kind of ranger would I be leaving you out here? I'm sure you'll be able to take care of yourself, but how bad would you feel if I got squished by a Golurk and you could've helped me?"[break][break]

As Nedjem headed the search, almost comical considering how tiny she would be to the great ghost-type when they finally find it, Pace followed along the winding paths of crushed corn that formed the crop circles with Percy along for the ride. The wolf and it's delicious prey, working together! At least, that's how Pace would've seen it - himself as a proud king of beasts, as opposed to the moron that he was. We, of course, don't have time to unpack why Pace would refer to a romantic interest as prey. Stupid dumb boy disease, probably.[break][break]

"I didn't say you were a child!" Pace laughed - it was hard not to when Percy looked so damn grumpy - and if Pace was really cruel, he would have pointed out that faint pink creeping across Percy's fair features. "Still, the offer stands if things get scary"[break][break]

As they reached the edge of the path, they came across a long line that seemed to cut across the entirety of the circle, not unlike a crosshair. In the centre, as they approached, where three similar lines all met, there was what looked like... a crater. Inside it, head just about poking up, sat a GOLURK.[break][break]

"Huh. That explains why we couldn't see him from back there, huh?"[break][break]

The Golurk quite quietly, perhaps four feet deep, looking half-asleep. Did giant monolithic automaton-esque creatures sleep? That was something that hadn't come up in training yet. But the question right now seemed less how did it get here or why is it doing this, and more...[break][break]

"...How the hell are we gonna coax this thing out?"

Percy knows what Pace’s intentions actually are with those words, of course, but he can’t help but point out how faulty that logic actually is. He’s tempted to also add something along the lines of that just being one of the many hazards of the ranger’s job and not his problem at all, but he knows very well that Pace is right and that he would feel pretty damn bad if he could have helped but didn’t...

Why does he feel like he’s being hunted, though? Like Pace Mahmoud thinks himself some big bad wolf stalking helpless prey? Like the ranger is sure he’ll get what he wants?
[break][break]
Too bad Percy is no lamb to be sent to the slaughter, and that this is not the type of hunt he cares for.
[break][break]
So, rolling his eyes, he ignores the other’s persistence, his attention instead turning to hole in the ground. Crater? What it is…

”Shouldn’t a ranger know how to do that sort of thing? I’m sure you can figure it out.”

This challenge comes with a raised eyebrow, and nearby, there’s sound of the Rotom drone approaching and recording every second of the interaction.

Pace takes the time to watch Percival for just a second, take note of the way he moves, the way his hair falls. He's a very good looking guy, even aside of that don't talk to me attitude. The way Percy acted made it clear that Pace would be getting nowhere near him today - near him in the carnal sense at least, considering the closeness of the corn meant they were walking not too far from one another. But even despite that distance - perhaps entirely because of that distance - he enticed Pace more than usual.[break][break]

"Are you really bullying me for letting you feel involved? Unless you prefer to sit back and let me do all the work - I'm more than comfortable with that"[break][break]

Referring entirely to... work. Of course.[break][break]

Flirting aside, they did actually need to do something about the Golurk, who - despite seeming sleepy (?) - was indeed quite awake. Awake enough to look at the two of them, at least, though luckily it didn't seem aggressive. In fact, the great ghost-type's gaze wandered further up, entranced by the whirring above them of the Rotom drone. After a moment of interested staring, the Golurk let out a deep, appreciative rumble - as though responding to the sound of the Rotom's fans.[break][break]

"...Hey, call your Rotom down here. He seems to like it"

While listening to Pace, there’s the passing thought that he probably got assigned this job out in bumfuck nowhere that anyone would think is a prank because he’s one of those lazy and useless rangers that don’t do much otherwise. Yes, Percy is judgemental like that, but can he really be blamed when all Pace has done since yanking him into the corn stalks has been flirting with him and asking him to do his job for him?

Instead of looking at the ranger, he continues to watch the Golurk, his arms crossing when also noticing how it seems interested in his Rotom. ”Wisp.” When hearing its name, the Plasma pokémon flies closer while still filming larger ghosts, the fans of the fan it's possessing humming gently with every turn.

He could've replied to that with a thousand different things, all bullying and all mean, but he decided to let Percy go and have a few minutes without Pace breathing down his neck about something... even if it would've been really funny to say something that might make him blush more.[break][break]

The Golurk was laser-focused on the Rotom as it hovered to Percy's side - Pace could've smiled, since it was pretty charming. But nonetheless, the Golurk was in the way and needed to be moved. Pace shifted his weight from one leg to the other for a moment as he thought.[break][break]

"Well, we could try to--"[break][break]

Before he finished, the great ghost in the hole ahead of them began to stand. The walls of the crater crumbled a little as the body holding them up shifted and stood, and the Golurk squeezed an arm out from the confines of the dirt, reaching out and extending it's hand towards the hovering drone pokémon.[break][break]

Luuuuuuurk.[break][break]

Pace grinned at the show. Such a gentle giant - was it really just out here looking for a friend?[break][break]

The few minutes are appreciated, because truly, while Pace can try to play his games all he wants, what occupies Percy’s mind at moments like those are much different thoughts. For starters, there’s the fact that this apparently-wild Golurk could so very easily hurt the sweet and adorable Rotom that he very much needs for work. And, also the fact that there’s actually no scoop here at all.

It’s with those words that he starts walking, no more being said. The ever-obedient Rotom follows along, of course, and even though Percy would probably deny it, the slightest of smirks tugs at his lips when he turns away.
