do they spend time with you? do they raise you well? do they hold you in their arms when you're too scared of the dark? do they take you to town to eat your favorite pancakes, the day after a hard test to ease your after-school nerves? do they arrange for piano and violin lessons when your eyes sparkle at a performance? yes, they do all of that, and sometimes set time aside from their busy schedules.[break][break]

your childhood isn't lacking; you loved your parents just as much as they treasured you. they loved the silver locks from your mother, and the clear blue eyes of your father. they loved listening to the violin you picked up on a whim, and loved the energy you had when you ran out with your friends. you were bright, you were cheery, and most of all you were kind. little pixie didn't know the silent thief of sight had its fingers wrapped around her pretty little eyes. it started with failing eyesight, which your parents brought you to the doctors for. you found, as you got a little older, the notes were getting harder to read on the paper. you get frustrated at yourself, and at your eyes, and your parents take the brunt as they watch their precious daughter suffer. it isn't to say they didn't try; they did. they took you to the doctors, a little more frequently than other children. every visit, you come out with thicker glasses. every visit, you felt the bridge of your nose press harder, and harder, but you learned to stop complaining about them. who had to pay for this? your parents. they loved you, truly, they did, but you were starting to eat more money than they could make. your family was happy because they could provide for themselves; and this fragile happiness began to rip at the seams. it started with tiredness and dismissal, until you heard the yelling from the other room. you'd hold your ears and become silent, knowing this was all your fault. when the anger couldn't be directed at each other anymore, they'd direct it at you.[break][break]

it didn't last long, but you can't forget the hand that was occasionally raised, followed by the expression of disgust - disgust at themselves for falling so deep. [break][break]

then one day, their attitudes change. from what little you recall of them, they're smiling as they hold their hands out to you, to guide you down the streets. they tell you, so sweetly:[break][break]

and you smile, holding onto the twenty dollar bill they said you could buy anything with. one hour turned into two, then two into three, then three into the evening day. someone approached you to ask where your parents were, and you only wore a smile as you swing your feet with the lie "they'll be back soon". and when you look up, with a small smile on your face, you realize that the thief had taken more than the light from your eyes.
