This time there was no bake sale or anything.

It was just them, the two of them at the flat on the Sanctuary grounds.

And since he was itching to bake something, well, to celebrate ‘Thanksgiving’ or something (as if the non-stop eating fests around the entire region weren’t crazy enough already) he thought of making something simple.

The question now was what kind of pie did the bluenette like to eat…

How would he get away with this under Mattie’s nose without the other realizing that the pie was for him?

Alexei was being weird. And that was saying something, since Matt was classified as a weirdo himself. He seemed to be sneaking around, trying to avoid him.

Not today.

He found him in the kitchen, sneaking up behind him before wrapping his arms around him. Pouting, his cheek puffed out like a cheek pouch.

"What are you doing?"

He thought the other had either slept in again (typical) or was in the shower (also typical) but what he was not expecting was to be snuck up on in the kitchen, no less!

“Bwaaaah!” he exclaimed, very nearly dropping the eggs he was about to crack open over the mixing bowl.

“I was going to bake something, but I don’t know what filling to use,” he began. He wondered if he could be all coy with this.

“Specifically, I was thinking of baking a pie.”

Matt's plan worked. He couldn't help the sly smile on his lips when his boyfriend got startled, though he held him tightly in his arms to prevent any fall or unnecessary arm flailing.

"A pie? Why? What for?"

Of course he was nosy. There was probably no where in the multiverse that he wasn't nosy.

“Oh, you do?” he hummed, this smirk on his face as he managed to safely crack the eggs into the mixing bowl. Now, how was he going to ask what filling the other liked in the pie… oh.

Oh.

“See, here’s the thing,” he continued aa he began mixing the eggs into the flour mixture with a spatula.

“I don’t know what pie filling would go nicely with this,” he admitted with a sheepish grin on his face, wondering if his boyfriend would catch on to what he was doing.

“Because I’m making this pie for someone special.”

Of course, that made him confused. Because who else was as special in Alexei's life as Matt? He gave him a look, stepping back to stand beside him at the counter.

"Who?"

He was persistent, like an annoying fly. He prayed that it wasn't some rando.

"I dunno. I like a lot of stuff when it comes to pie. Pecans, chocolate, apple, anything..."

Right then and there, his resolution was put to the test. But he couldn't help but crack up at the mention of “anything” going into the pie filling.

“Mattie, lapushka,” he continued, unable to stop himself from cracking up with laughter.

“I can’t put the entire kitchen sink into the pie for a filling,” he teased. "For starters, how would a pie with everything on top taste like?"

Unable to resist, he finally caved, his shoulders heaving with laughter.

“You silly,” he went on, checking that the pie dough was coming together quite nicely.

“The pie I’m making is for you.”

Matt knew when he was called lapushka, something was up. It was like Alexei's nice way of calling him stupid.

"Me? Really? What made you want to do that?"

He tilted his head, the oven warm like a few will-o-wisp from a fire-type Pokemon.

Oh, about that.

“The League asked for a lot of pies again. Bake sale fundraising. I just finished making most of the order but I had enough for one pie extra to make just for us to eat. Can’t let the ingredients go to waste now, can I,” he explained.

Surely it would explain why a lot of the staffers at the Sanctuary kept waiting outside the flat for him to come out with the boxes of pies ready to be sent out to be sold to raise funds, again.

Well, not that the Sanctuary needed any (thanks to a very generous donation made by Martín del Mar).

“I mean, how long has it been since you had pie just for yourself?” he asked the other, leaning over to peck him on the cheek.

“Clearly, I tried to hide it from you but I can’t hide anything from you now, can I?”

Now that the dough was ready, it was time to get to the best part of baking.

“You pick the filling, I’ll make the magic come to life.”

It was a team effort, after all!

As he reached over to grab something to help, he accidentally knocked a few eggs on the floor. Oops. He looked from the floor to Alexei, wincing.

"I guess I'll leave it to you and clean this up."
