Taking another sip of her drink, Matilda admired the beautiful decorations. The glow of the sunset lit the park as people's laughter filled the air. Adults and kids alike enjoyed the delicious array of food and the many vendor booths and activities that continued well into the night. Children and Pokemon giggled and ran about, chasing each other with glee. One of the many things the festival offered was a simple but elegant outdoor stage. It was currently being occupied by someone reading prompts off a karaoke machine, singing their heart out to a dozen or so tables all set up for small groups to enjoy dinner or a drink. Fairy lights and paper lanterns were hung in every tree, illuminating the courtyard beautifully. [break][break]

All the tables around her were packed with families and groups of friends enjoying the festivities. The five seats around her table remained empty. She was fine with it - she still hadn't had much time to socialize with people, and oftentimes at gatherings like this you want to be around people you know and are comfortable with. Besides, she wasn't really alone; Taika toddled about on the empty table entranced by the lights, occasionally distracted by Dziban floating around the chairs and underneath the table as he played a rudimentary version of peek-a-boo with her. She would start and let out a small squeal, then giggle and continue their game.[break][break]

When the song ended Mattie clapped along with everyone else, Taika mirroring her with glee. Matilda smiled and glanced around to see if she could spot any familiar faces.

Mirri, on her end, had a rather torn impression of festivals like this. At the end of the day, they were pretty and everything. But they were also places that people went to with others, with friends, with family, with loved ones. Yet usually, whenever she stumbled upon one like this day, she didn’t really have any of that. This was only exacerbated here in Hoenn, where she barely knew anyone at all to begin with. There were a lot of people around who clearly enjoyed themselves, yet she mostly just walked around the place, sort of acting as security though mostly just trying to decide what to do.

If nothing else, she did like the atmosphere of the place at least. Just because she felt a bit lonely with so many people about that were not, that did not mean she was sad, at least. The joy of others was something she often could sort of ‘leech off of’, gaining at least something just from watching them and listening to the music. Still though, the lady trailed by Honedges did seem a bit out of place to some people, that much she could tell. Maybe it was time to actually do mingle. All this walking had tired her lightly after all.

Blue eyes scanned the area for free seats for a bit until she came across a table with only one occupant, not counting Pokemon. That lady was probably as unpopular as she was in some regards. Though she also seemed oddly familiar. Mirri could not quite put it, really, but she did feel as if she had seen this woman somewhere before. But where? She could not tell, but she had already started walking that way. This was not the time to comb her memory for something she probably would not find with certainty anyway.
Thus, she took a deep breath once she closed in some more, before making up her mind. Worst case, she was wrong. Which was a fairly bad case as far as she was concerned. But that could not be helped. “Um, excuse me. Did we meet before somewhere?” It was a bit awkward and she lightly blushed. But it was done, now.

Taika had spotted the approaching woman first, her eyes often drawn to beautiful things. It was the little fairy's distraction that caught Matilda's attention. Mattie smiled warmly and stood to greet her.[break][break]

"Did we meet before somewhere?"[break][break]

As soon as the words were out of the other woman's mouth, Matilda felt the vague familiarity, but couldn't place her. "I think...maybe we have," she responds hesitantly. She ran through all the events she'd been to since arriving in Hoenn; the Christmas party, Dom's boyfriend's place, the Ranger lu-[break][break]

"The Ranger lunch!" She exclaims, a touch too loud amongst the pause between singers. A few people glance over at the pair, but they quickly go back to their own conversations. Matilda pays them no mind. "I saw you at the Ranger station, right? You're a cadet?" Her tone is still excited but much more controlled as she extends her hand for a shake.

The lunch? She briefly blinked, confused. Only then did she remember. Oh, right, there had been something like that. The rangers were an odd kind of organization, weren’t they? She’d almost forgotten about that event, mostly because she really did not feel a whole lot like she was some kind of cadet or anything. But apparently, that was what she was supposed to be here. After all, she had agreed to play by this region’s rules.

She still found herself scratching the back of her head, slightly embarrassed by all that – and the amount of attention the other had involuntarily drawn towards them. It was not good at all, but she could handle it, for now. “I do remember attending that, though there were so many people present then that I sadly do not remember you clearly,” she replied, still a bit stiff and overly formal. But hey, it was the truth. Could not exactly be helped, now could it? “Might I…take a seat?” It was getting a bit uncomfortable standing here, now that everyone was watching, after all.

"Oh yes yes, of course!" Embarrassed she hadn't offered sooner, Matilda pulls a chair out for the Ranger, shooing Dziban away so she could sit down. "That's quite alright, there were lots of new faces there and I honestly only remember you specifically because my friend Dom was pointing out the different uniforms for the different ranks." Noticing her own almost empty cup and the complete lack of refreshment on the other woman's behalf, Matilda politely asks, "Can I grab you a drink?" She gestures to a nearby booth serving all manner of beverages, alcoholic or not.[break][break]

Taika toddles over to the gorgeous blue-eyed woman, holding her arms out in an attempt to be picked up and happily chirping, "To-to, togepi!" Dziban had given up the seat when Matilda had waved him away earlier, but he was having a wonderful time floating around the newcomer, inspecting her from every angle.[break][break]

"The two of you are insufferable," Matilda mutters to the two little ones, putting Dziban away with a small flash of light and reaching for Taika to keep her from bothering her new friend any further. As much as she didn't mind the chaos of the small babs, she could tell the other woman was a bit uncomfortable and sought to remedy that as much as possible.

Phew. She was given a chance to sit down. It would have been really awkward if that had been ignored or – even worse – rejected. Not that there reasonably was a reason for the other to do so, but when it came to social interaction, where her instincts were of no help whatsoever, she simply tended to assume the worst. That was just how she reacted in situations like that. Couldn’t really be helped at all.

Fortunately though, this also led to a lot of positive surprises and relif. Which then turned into positivity of course. A smile adorned her face as she sat down – a cautious one maybe, but genuine nonetheless. The Togepi only made that easier for her, as she quickly decided to take that cute egg up on its offer and pulled it into her arms. She did quite like cute things and pokemon, after all, even though she tried her best not to show it too much. She didn’t put too much attention towards the one floating about. That was a little weird, but also totally fine, really. “Ah, they both seem quite alright. As for the rangers, I am not too fond of any of those uniforms, really. I mean, back at home we have knights that look much more proper, almost regal. Though I reckon that is also a little too fancy for a uniform in some regard. Hmm….” Evidently, she was trailing off in thought there, after going on a tangent to begin with.

When the Ranger scoops Taika up, the little Togepi giggles and nuzzles happily into her arms.[break][break]

Matilda flags down a nearby caterer before taking a seat herself. "Back home? Where's home for you?" She asks Mirri.[break][break]

The caterer approaches, standing between the two women. "I'll take an Old Fashioned, and whatever she's having." Matilda winks at Mirri, handing several bills over to the caterer before the cadet can even think about paying for her own drink. The caterer looks down at Mirri with a smile, holding a pen to her notepad. "And for you, miss?"

“Huh? Oh, I will take one too,” she replied to the waiter. Everything being said, she just knew so little about beverages like this that it was always hard to tell what to get. The only times she really drank anything other than water, juice and milk were during family functions or when someone thanked her for aid by inviting her. Usually, others just provided.

And since she was a rather boring person in her own estimation, she just defaulted to what the other ordered in cases like this one. Then, while petting the Togepi, she turned back towards Matilda. “I was born and raised in Galar. Though I guess since I have been travelling like a knight for so long, I do not really have a home per se. My home is the road, I guess. Though I am always looking for a place and person to settle down, I reckon.” That sounded much too coherent and forward to just be her own thoughts to anyone who knew her. Though the other probably did not know the novels that Mirri was cannibalizing in that very moment for her own little story of life.

The caterer smiles and nods, heading off to make the two ladies their drinks.[break][break]

"Oh, I've always wanted to visit Galar!" Matilda tells her with a smile. "I've heard the Ponyta there are just beautiful." Taking the last sip of her current drink, Mattie sympathizes with the other's sense of homelessness. "I've been traveling a lot too recently. I know how it feels."[break][break]

The caterer reappears, setting a drink in front of each of them and whisking away the empty glass. The next song is getting queued up onstage, and over the rising din Mattie thanks the waitstaff and they head off to the next table. Matilda scoots her chair closer to Mirri so the two can continue their discussion comfortably.[break][break]

"I've never heard of travelling Knights. What were you up to that kept you journeying instead of staying in your town?" The ice clinks gently against the glass as Mattie swirls her drink slowly, her knee just barely touching Mirri's thigh as she leans back in her chair and relaxes.

“They certainly are,” she started, just barely stopping herself from finishing the line from one of her books. She did like to use them, even if they sounded stilted, since they helped her express herself. But, well, finishing that one would probably have meant coming on too strongly. And given that she slightly blushed when the other scooted a bit closer, despite her still holding a respectful distance, she probably was not ready for anything more.

Instead, she latched onto the talk about knighthood, after taking a brief, decisive sip herself. That was always a good reason to pause momentarily, after all. “I…well, my family is one of knights in general. Staying would have made me redundant, I guess. Not a lot of help I could give in a town where my parents already have a whole household ready to render it. My brother – “ she broke up briefly, flushing and needing to harrumph when she felt the other’s knee. Though, granted, she does absolutely nothing to stop the contact, either.
“My brother did the same. He came to Hoenn as well. Since he never reported back, I decided to search for him, as I did. I found him, but he is mostly just goofing around, I think.”

At the mention of 'being redundant', Matilda frowns ever so slightly. Her expression shifts to something a bit more neutral when Mirri brings up her brother. "Ah, so your brother is what brought you to Hoenn then," she repeats, almost as though she's clarifying what the other woman had said. "What makes you think he's goofing around?" An amused smile tugs at her lips. Mattie continues swirling her glass gently, waiting for Mirri to respond before taking a slow sip.

“Yes. He is not the reason I travelled at all though, more like…well, I wanted to go somewhere and this gave me a meaningful direction of sorts.” A pretty big of sorts, mostly since her brother certainly did not need her help or anything. Not with his legendary monkeycats.

Either way, due to her own shortcomings and the distractions of proximity, she completely and utterly fails to read the other’s reaction and more or less ignores the shift in tone entirely. “And, well, when I did finally find him he had somehow managed to get chased up into a tree by Poochyenas, hanging there like a Mankey. Which was not the first time something like that happened. I simply assume that at any given point in time, he is probably goofing around.” She chuckled briefly, only to then sigh and add quietly and more to herself: “Probably still beats being boring, though.”

The song playing through the speakers wasn't annoyingly loud, but it was loud enough that while they could hear the other tables talking they couldn't make out any words. Given how closely she was paying attention to her new companion though, Matilda just barely caught what the other woman muttered. Taika, being much nearer, also overheard, and the little fairy and her Trainer share a brief look before Mattie's focus is once again on Mirri. [break][break]

"Well it sounds like he really needed you then," Mattie says confidently, taking a drink. "He would've been Pooch chow if you hadn't been looking after him." Without moving her feet Mattie taps Mirri's thigh with her knee, flashing her a smile.

He needed her? Mirri blinked, oddly surprised by these words. That certainly had not been how she had interpreted that situation. It would have felt quite nice if her brother had shown any indication of this, really. Instead, he had treated that situation as a minor inconvenience and her as a convenient help.

She sighed. Then, she blushed some more, when that knee made contact with her body once more. This was not what she’d expected for today at all! It wasn’t exactly bad, no. But….but it was unexpected! She had no idea how to handle that. “He…he didn’t really need me all that much, I think. Just went to goof off right away. I’m not sure anyone ever actually needed me proper outside of situations where I swiftly helped someone.” Another brief sigh follows, as she allows her dissatisfaction with her situation seep through lightly.
