t was no surprise that he'd run into ash again soon. after all, it was only a small amount of time since they last saw each other. though, before coming to notice her appearance, mateo commanded, "leaf blade, sceptile!" he was fending off the many mareanie that continually tried to attempt to take shore. "leaf storm that pile!" sending them back into one by one, it was child's play to the former gym leader.

as sceptile continued to hold back the army, he was greeted by a surprise. turning around, he'd come to see none other than ash. "oh! good to see you again, ash!" he greeted her cheerfully. "care to help sceptile with holding the maereanie's back?" they were growing to become stubborn by the minute. "sceptile's trying his best, but even he's gonna get worn out soon." they just needed to hold them back until they got the point that this town was protected, right? no big deal!

"i don't get why they're after the corsola here, but they'll have to leave eventually. so help us as much as you can!" mateo requested.

grin returned. he'd say, "nah, don't worry! this is a perfect time for training! can never go wrong with enhancing your pokemon's endurance and stamina!" sceptile would pull back to allow the birth of new allies to appear and assist. in doing so, he, too, would contemplate as to what the cause may have been.

"maybe there's no 'cause at all and they're just hungry? a shortage of food probably, but we can't just toss the corsola here to them! they'll just come back for more if we do that; so we need to beat'em up until they get it through their thick skulls!" maybe there was a ring leader nearby commanding them to do this? or perhaps team rocket were the cause of this town's trouble.

the possibility was endless. for now, they just needed to continue fighting. their goal was to hold the enemy back. "either way, this is starting to get annoying by the minute!" fighting was all they could do. at least until a better solution was thought up.

ice! the electrical surge was a success. sceptile remained knelt at mateo's side. "good job, they're definitely afraid now!" they may not have been able to figure out the problem, but that wasn't their job. "our job is just to protect the town, we just have to wait until the pokemon ranger arrive. they'll deal with it." mateo wasn't very knowledgeable when it came to the environment in this region nor the maerenie. so their reason for being so hungry was all but a mystery.

"sadly, my specialty lies in dragon-types. i don't have the proper knowledge of hoenn's ecosystem and pokemon to make a sound idea as to why they're here." yeah, they were going to definitely have to leave it up to the rangers. "remember, we're just here to assist in holding them back. no need to try and solve every little problem; sometimes there are issues out of our control. i'm sure once the rangers arrive they'll be able to figure it out, for now we just need to hold them back until then!" mateo stated, a thumbs up was then given. "sceptile can utilize long range techniques as well, with the power of leaf storm we can blow them back to kingdom come!"

uriosity complete. their problem was found: toxapex. a pokemon never before seen, he was surprised with how violent the water-type was. but, nonetheless, it was a challenge. "nice return, metagross!" he complimented the metal-type. and with that, he was ready to send the toxapex back from whence it came. "i guess we can clean up the mess for them now that we've figured out the problem; sceptile, on your feet!" ready for combat, he readied on command.

"together with atlas, use leaf storm!" in unison the duo would release hell upon the toxapex; their elements practically its natural enemy. the toxapex was sent flying afar, landing into the water in an unconscious state. as their leader was down for the count, the maerenie took it as a sign to retreat. for today the town was safe, but tomorrow or next week? who knew whether they'd be back or not. ash and mateo could give the story to the rangers later. hopefully telling them would be enough to forewarn them about the dangers of toxapex and its legion of maerenie.

he was a quick one to leave. and as per usual he'd send her off with a nice wave. "i'd like that, grave!" he called her. to have such a back to back encounter with her. they may as well have been traveling together. she was quite the heroine in his eyes. "mm, let's go grab you some grub! you earned it buddy!" mateo praised sceptile.
