YOU'D HAVE TO USE AT LEAST TEN KNIVES TO CUT THE TENSION BETWEEN US | Cyg’s manicured fingernails rat-a-tatted across the table, a sure sign of her nerves. With her other hand she forcefully spun a lock of golden hair around her knuckle, tugging on her scalp. As she waited for her partner to sit across from her, she cursed her spur-of-the-moment decision to join this sordid affair.

Her mind scrambles, trying to remember the last time she was on a date and it turned out okay. Surely before recent memory. Sometime in the B.C, most likely.

Then, her partner appears. Striking light hair. Cyg swallows, hopes her teeth don’t look too yellow. She holds out a hand, fingernails crowned in black oval gel tips, 75$ worth of work to impress strangers for less than five minutes. Oh, the misery.

“Hi, I’m Cyg,” she says lamely, offering a faltering smile. She’s not really unhappy to be there. Just nervous. And her thighs are chafing.

a moment passes, and she slips her hand free before sitting down at the table. she picks two glasses of champagne off a passing waiter before extending one over to her date.

YOU'D HAVE TO USE AT LEAST TEN KNIVES TO CUT THE TENSION BETWEEN US | Ana holds her hand like it’s something special for a moment and she can’t help it, her breath catches. It’s been a minute, okay. Like, a long minute. Like, years. With a deft grace, her date takes two flutes of champagne from a tray and offers one. Cyg wraps her fingers around the gentle crystal like a Neanderthal, holding it in the crooks of her knuckles with both hands like it’s a paper cup of coffee at a dollar street vendor. She hopes Ana can’t see her hands shake.

“Thank you,” she says, eagerly taking a swig and trying not to gulp. “I… thrift a lot.” Lame, lame, lame lame lame lame lame-o! God, could she be any more lame. She looks down at the dissipating bubbles in her champagne, false eyelashes giving her a headache.

“So, when you signed up for this,” she finally said, struggling to find the words, “what… why? Uh, I mean, what were you expecting?”

Probably not her, to be honest.

YOU'D HAVE TO USE AT LEAST TEN KNIVES TO CUT THE TENSION BETWEEN US | Oh, jeez. Cyg felt sure her face was red as a tomato. This lady was forward! And smooth. Like a nice whiskey. She drank from her own glass and tried not to gulp. “Honestly, I have no idea,” she confessed on the exhale of her chug, realizing her glass was empty. “Spur of the moment thing. Maybe I was a little drunk?” she shrugged.

God she was so out of her depth. “You seem very pleasurable too. I mean. Fuck.”

Well, yes, that was what she meant. But did she really have to say it like that?

YOU'D HAVE TO USE AT LEAST TEN KNIVES TO CUT THE TENSION BETWEEN US | The bell dings and Cyg jumps up with a start. In the space between the beginning and end of the date she feels like she’s aged twelve years.

“Um, yeah,” she said, scribbling her phone number on a napkin and sliding it over to Ana, hoping she wasn’t being too forward. “I’d-- love to.”

She let whatever it was she’d love to do hang open for improvisation.
