The last time he’d been here, it was still safe to land within the city proper. But now, it was a different case entirely—

Seeing as Sootopolis was now pretty much ‘prime Rocket real estate’ anyone who was with the League making an appearance there would raise the alarm—even if the person in question by all technicalities had property registered to their name there.

(Case in point: himself.)

Ever since the Takeover, he’d been unable to return to the property, but thank hell most of the contents of said guesthouse were just mundane things—all of everything important he owned was either behind lock and key in the Ranger offices over at Lilycove or at his place in Verdanturf.

Still, though—

He knew that this instance was going to be different. Hopefully.

He still had his Ranger ID on him just in case it was needed.

The hustle and bustle that Lars saw the last time here was just a pleasant memory now.[break][break]

It was now a desolate quiet area. The gym was silent ever since the Sootopolis raid since public opinion of the league quickly sank like a boulder in water. Melody still kept the bare minimum of staff for their own safety so the same assistant who helped lars last time was still there. "Oh Mr. Anderson! Hello, right this way. She's already ready for you sir!" she said recognizing him. [break][break]

Once Lars moved down the familiar hallway the music hall he saw last time was all black, there were a lot of shadows as a single spotlight shone down on Melody. "Oh hey! Nice to see ya Laurence!" she exclaims glad to see he was doing. "You're here again huh? I'm excited to see how you'll do for this new challenge." she grinned. [break][break]

"One question though, from the list we provided you for genres. Which is your favorite? Or do you want to make it dealer's choice?" she grinned devilishly as she was excited for him to see how his challenged influenced her own.

“Yeah, I’m back. Takes more than that to knock me out of commission, you know.”

He’d immediately noticed the atmosphere around the area was different from last time—whereas his previous visit the entire place was exploding with light, life, and color; this time around everything was more—subdued.

Well, he couldn’t blame her due to the proximity of enemy territory…

When the question came to genres, he had to stop and do a double-take.

“Wait, I have to pick a genre too?” he blinked. Oops.

Did he miss the memo somewhere about this…?

“You… you don’t do pop-rock genres, do you.”

Because that was as close as he was going to get, if judging by what song was currently playing in the back of his mind dictated…

(It was the song he’d serenaded his Lapras with.)

"Good, I don't like people who give up so easily. Some things are worth fighting for." she says giving him a little wink.

As soon as the word pop rock is mentioned she tilted her head. Ooooo, a fusion between her two galleries? She hadn't really mixed it up before but the rooms could be rearranged... "Ok, you're request has been heard, pop-rock it is!" she says clapping her hands before the lights shut off and lars is suddenly overwhelmed with the feeling of motion sickness if he is vulnerable to such a feeling (doubt it since he flies a lot pog) [break][break]

It was clear a pokemon came in and touched him and teleported him elsewhere in the maze she called a gym. It was still all dark around lars but there was a single wooden door in front of him, a voice rang out from a nearby speaker in the dark. "So normally I don't do two genres but honestly im feeling spicy today and wanna mix it up, besides you're one of the head rangers, got to make it a little harder ya know?" as a screen lit up with her face on it and her devilish grin to Laurence Anderson [break][break]

Ahead of you will be around 3 or more rooms featuring challenges based on the genre you picked. You will have to navigate your way through the obstacle course by WORKING TOGETHER with your partner Pokémon to overcome the challenge in the room. If you fall victim to any of the traps or my Pokémon's shenanigans you get a strike, three strikes and you're OUT!" she said as she clapped her hands together[break][break]

"Any questions? If not go ahead and feel free to start, your first challenge is opening the door. Make your entrance!" as a spotlight shone on a single door in front of Lars.

At least he didn’t get too motion sick. It felt like… a weird, Teleporting-like sensation? Whenever Lynette would do crazy shit while warping him from one spot to another.

One thing led to another and now there she was—behind the safety of a screen. Well, he was asking for it anyway!

“Wait, one question,” he said, holding up his hand.

“What about ‘special’ powers? Like, you know. Deity-related powers and stuff. Can I use the ice magic or fly around with the ice wings?”

It didn’t hurt to try and ask, you know!

It was then he realized how… lacking… he was when it came to ‘actual’ avatar-related fire power, as compared to everyone else. Sure, he could do the ice shards thing like his other!self back in that watery world, but not with as much frequency or control…

(He at least got the flight part down, thank fuck.)

Deity? Melody...didn't really like that word to describe articuno, it had an implication that didn't sit right with her. "Nope! No avatar abilities allowed" she said putting her hands together with an X. "This challenge is meant for you and your partner to pokemon you can survive as long as you have one another to lean on so outside help is a big nopey nope!" she answered. [break][break]

"But don't worry. You should be fine even without your abilities! I believe in you!" she says clapping her hands together as the door to the room opens on it's own and a bright white light floods lar's eyes. One of Melody's songs began to play in the room quite loudly as lar's eyes adjusted to the light in the room and he'd see what melody had set up for him. "Pop rock fusion challenge start!" [break][break]

The room had a very bright and bubbly appearance to it, obviously trying to emulate the look of the ocean floor but with a internet kind of spin on it. Coral took the shape of USB logos, fish were painted onto the walls in the shapes of pen tips and 1's and 0's were being illuminated on the walls to mimic the appearance of water. There were several platforms in the room that it seems lars and Metagross would need to jump across to get to the other side of the room. But there was already a problem they were moving WAYYYYY too fast for anyone or pokemon for that matter to try and stand on it without being flung off of it. [break][break]

The beginnings of a smirk just flashed across his face as the room began to react to their presence—

The silver beast took one singular look at the floating platforms, and let out exactly one grating noise; one that he knew that the other had come up with a plan.

“A’ight, let’s go,” he rumbled as he pulled out the fingerless gloves he would normally wear whenever he would ride on his companion’s back.

Once he’d situated himself on the Metagross’s ‘head’, the four legs folded in before the beginnings of Magnet Rise and the reversing of gravity took hold as Ro flew upward, an attempt to land on the first platform that was careening close towards them.

Thankfully the fingerless gloves were magnetized which allowed him to hang onto the back of the shining silver beast.

(Sometimes, he missed just riding on Ro’s back—even if he had the icy wings now, nothing beat the Air Metagross Express.)

• Metagross waits for Lars to get on his back before using Magnet Rise (1 / 5) to get in the air
• and it’s time to attempt landing on the first platform.
• (Shame he can’t float across the entire stretch because that looked pretty far.)

A pretty good idea! Melody liked the idea as it took advantage of metagross's magnetic body, especially now that the duo would see who it was exactly responsible for these platforms going nuts. An oricorio! Specifically A pom-pom form Oricorio as she was feeding extra electricity to these platforms and causing the engine to go nuts. [break][break]

She saw Lars and his metagross traversing her platforms and she stopped dancing and stomped her foot in a rage as she unleashed a hurricane attack to try and throw lars off of the metagross and into the lower level to give him a strike! How dare he! [break][break]

What will Lars and metagross do?

The good thing about Metagross was that since he was part Steel-type, was the fact that it would take little to faze him in terms of attacks that were wind-based.

Lars, however—

“Ah, shit!” he hissed as he hunched low, flattening himself as much as possible in order to avoid getting blown away. He was thankful that those fingerless gloves he was wearing were magnetic…

The wind came down upon them, powerful and screaming.

“Do what you have to!” he continued, knocking exactly once and pointing at the Oricorio—a singular red eye then affixed itself on the berserk Oricorio.

A few moments later, a burst of Telekinetic energy whistled through the air, an attempt to separate the Oricorio from what he presumed to be the ‘control panel’ of whatever was controlling the levitating platforms.

Would it work…?

• still levitating (bless, Magnet Rise; 2 / 5)
• spots the source of the problem
• Metagross then used Telekinesis in an attempt to separate the Oricorio from the control panel!

Oricorio watched helplessly as her body began to levitate against her will and she started to fidget around wildly. There was no control panel but now Laurence Anderson would be able to see clearly what she was doing, she fired off a REVELATION DANCE that caused electricity to spark in the area, sending extra power to the motors on the platforms causing them to go WILDLY out of control. [break][break]

She began to direct the current of electricity towards her opponent's, wondering how they'd handle such a problem. Melody was already enjoying this challenge so far as she watched eagerly from her room as her staff worked on her hair and make up with quick haste. Lar's would approaching her with lightning speed.

“Hang on!” he shouted as the sudden burst of electricity exploded from the point of contact—thank hell Ro’s reversal of gravity via Magnet Rise kept them in the air—hell only one of the Metagross’s four legs were clamped onto the levitating platform as the incoming attack made to unseat them.

Tempted as he was to suddenly take off and jump into the air; that was off the table—

In order to get control back, the source had to be knocked down. Or out, depending on how bad this was going to get.

Thankfully the Metagross was faster than Lars when it came to trains of thought—they were still hanging onto the platform, but at this point the silver beast was waiting for an opening, red eye squinting at the Oricorio—

A sudden burst of rainbow-colored energy exploded from in front of the Metagross’s face, the Psychic attack aimed with deliberate precision towards the Oricorio—

Would it find its mark?

• still hanging onto the platform (Magnet Rise; 3 / 5)
• waits for an opening despite being thrown around like a gigantic rag doll
• Metagross sees a window, and takes the shot with a concentrated blast of Psychic aimed at the Oricorio
• If you can’t stop the platforms, go after the source!

Melody's oricorio stared as it realized there was no way for it to dodge the oncoming attack. [break][break]

It unleashed an unholy screech as it got pushed off of it's platform and shouted enough profanities that it could've made a sailor blush. It plummeted to the ocean floor below. A massive splash could be heard as it was quite a drop, it laid there in the water just floating as Melody's water Pokémon got to work taking Oricorio away. [break][break]

A key dropped down, floating in front of Lars as Melody's gardevoir used her psychic powers to keep it there. Once he took the keys however it would teleport away, seemingly only there to give him the key to open the next door. What waited beyond the next door?

One down, and—

“Huh.”

He blinked at the sight of the keys floating in mid-air. Okay, what were these doing here…

Never mind that he’d heard the Oricorio swear like a—wait, how in the hell could it swear like that?! he shoved the thought aside and looked around the floating keys, wondering if there was a trap—

The Metagross let out a singular grating sound, before he looked down at Ro.

“You sure?”

There was nothing else to it, anyway…

He then grabbed the keys before heading onto the next challenge. Who knew what else was waiting up ahead—!

• wonders who that Oricorio had been hanging around, swear like a sailor indeed
• squints suspiciously at the keys, checking that there are no traps before taking them

The rest of the challenge for the most part would deal with similar styles of room. A room that normally would be a regular obstacle course with some of melody's pokemon making an appearance and causing an issue for Lars to overcome with his metagross. [break][break]

The last room however was VERY different. [break][break]

Once Laurence Anderson made it to the last room he'd realize he was back in the main hall. But thing's looked different this time around, the stage was pink and in a similar fashion as the first room, but as he got closer pyrotechnics came out from the stage sending fire skyrocketing into the air as Melody was dressed in a rock garb. Leather jacket, messy hair with a white bow tying her long hair at the top and ripped stockings. FULL ROCKER LOOK. [break][break]

"See, I knew you'd have no problem reaching her. Only question left is can you manage to survive the Diva's realm?" she said as she pulled out her guitar and began to play the song that had been playing previously live in front of him herself. This time, three of her pokemon appearing to try and stop him. Melody's primarina and her two toxtricities made their apperance as they also began to play the song alongside her. Primarina fired an icy wind on the floor, causing parts of it to freeze with a slick layer of ice. Toxtricity lowkey and amped form also playing their part and both of them using overdrive.

Thankfully the previous room wasn’t as hard as—

“So I’m getting the full concert now, huh?” he said with a smirk as he was met with the Gym Leader herself, and now there were three Pokémon out on the field—one Primarina and two Toxtricity.

He was saving a certain tactic for this final showdown, and now was the time to use it!

(No, he wasn’t going to summon the deity themselves—that would be cheating!)

He then momentarily dismounted from the shining Metagross, before tapping a certain stone on a ring he wore.

“Since I’m getting the full concert treatment from you—you’ll get to see the full power of Ro as well!”

A shining burst of light enveloped the Metagross, before exploding outward and revealing the vaguely arachnid-like form; while it was still Ro, there were a few changes here and there.

This was going to be a new experience, though—would he be able to ride on the Mega-evolved Metagross while fighting them all off at the same time?

Seeing as the floor was now slippery and slick due to what the Primarina had done—time to fly, as always!

“Go,” he said as he climbed on Ro’s head, knocked exactly once—and a Magnet Rise sent them skyward once more. However, the other attack was going to be a problem—

“Burst!”

A few moments afterward the Mega-evolved Metagross released a powerful burst of Psychic energy as he grit his teeth, bracing himself against the tidal wave of sound that was now shaking the entire area.

• arrives in the final room, sees he’s getting the full treatment
• mega-evolves Ro the Metagross
• used Magnet Rise (1 / 5) to float above the ground; before releasing a Psychic burst to meet the Overdrive!
