Cyg opens her mouth to speak but finds she doesn’t have any words. Magically, they’ve all been spirited away by Felix’s powers of cagey bullshit. Of course he would say something cryptic and boring like ‘work’. She pressed her lips together into a thin line, and rolled her eyes so hard she was amazed they couldn’t be heard.

It really didn’t pay to mouth off to the guy responsible for saving your skin, though. Cyg was reprehensible and snotty, at times, but she liked to think she wasn’t downright stupid.

“Chili, please,” she said, slightly miserable, turning her head and resting her cheek on top of her knees.

The silence stretched on until it became too much.

“Is this the part where you tell me you’re a super trained ex-guerilla fighter now working for Team Rocket as a killer-for-hire and you wanted to test your mettle against the wilds of this island to keep your instincts sharp?” she mumbled, too tired to care how sassy she was being.

Felix was the broody, silent type. Cyg liked to fill silences with noise. Oil and water. Ice and… obnoxious radio static?

But that crack in his armor. The faint way his mouth tugged upwards, the apple of his cheeks a stark contrast to the sharp of his chin. The way the cavern warmed at the heat in his voice.

That was comfortable. That was a victory.

She smiled back. She let her eyes close.

“Only if you take me to a movie, too.”
