the concept of

a safari zone is new to her. though she's (now) certain that her home region had a similar protected area, rhian can't exactly go back to it— not with it being so close to kanto. she'd have to make do with her first time being in hoenn.

after a short run-down of how the safari balls worked and how long she had until a warden came to pick her up, rhian is released into the apparent wild.

she scans the entire area with the wide-eyed curiosity of a child. it's almost like a zoo. with little pockets of a bunch of terrains put into one place, it really is kind of like a zoo. unlike a zoo, however, the pokémon roam free here. rhian can't see any fences or cages to restrain them.

better than a zoo, she decides, stepping into the first area.

despite her

inexperience, rhian comes prepared. she's brought lots of sweets: block candies and poffins and jelly beans and even some poké puffs. she looks at her collections of sweets now, and is left with the hard choice of which to use first.

"let's start off with... my favorite, some whipped dream." she places the pink item on a patch of low grass, takes a couple steps back, and waits.

the next time she looks at her strategically placed bait, she finds it's multiplied. instead of the one, she sees two. wait, did i...? doubting her eyes before her memory, she walks closer to it. not only has the whipped dream multiplied, but one of them has also grown in size.

[break][break]

"amazing," she gasps, reaching out to pick the bigger one for closer inspection. she couldn't even begin to explain this phenomenon. "not only its size. its weight has increased exponentially, too," she continues to muse. it's only when the whipped dream twitches in her arms that she realizes it's no longer a thing.

the slurpuff drops to the ground with a soft thud and the rustling of leaves. "oh dear arceus, i'm so sorry. are you okay?" she asks the pokémon.

[break][break]

clearly more interested in the sweet treat than in her, the slurpuff turns back to the whipped dream. rhian crouches down next to it and ventures a hand to its head. seeing that it doesn't shy away, she gives it a gentle pat.

"like it? consider it all yours." as she says this, rhian reaches inside her bag for another treat to offer. a yellow patterned jelly bean this time. "you can also have this one, if you want it."

the girl waits until the slurpuff is satisfied and all done feasting on the sweets before presenting to it one of the safari balls she was issued at the entrance. "do you wanna tag along with me?"

rhian doubts

using the same spot so soon would work, so she and her new friend slurpuff make their way farther inside the safari. on their way, she tries to come up with a nice nickname for her team's new addition. she couldn't call her slurpuff forever, right?

"did anyone ever tell you that you look a lot like cotton candy?" rhian can picture the delicious treat right next to the pokémon. they'd look identical.

the slurpuff doesn't reply, for obvious reasons. instead, it stares straight ahead. rhian follows her pokémon's gaze.

the first thing that her eyes rest on are the sylveon's long, flowing ribbons, so characteristic of the species. "those ribbons look a lot like mine, wouldn't you say?" she giggles, spinning on her heels once to showcase said ribbons.

the sylveon is interested in rhian's ribbons, too. it approaches, sparkly blue eyes fixated on her hair and on her dress, both sporting matching ribbons. it circles around her, as if inspecting her, and waves its ribbons again.

bending down, rhian places her hands on her knees and smiles at the sylveon. "they're really pretty."

it's all the invitation the sylveon needs to inch closer and tackle her. it's all playful fun, she realizes. rhian rolls on the grass, laughing, as the sylveon pokes its head inside her bag looking for tasty treats.

she watches the sylveon with amused eyes. when it's about to take its third poké puff, she raises a hand for it to stop. "as much as i love sweets too, it's not healthy to eat so many at once!"

the sylveon seems to understand. though disappointed, it nods. she smiles. "what do you say to this, though?" rhian takes a second safari ball out, and offers it to the sylveon.

with two

new pokémon by her side, rhian doesn't think she can ask for more. she still has one safari ball left and over half of the sweets she brought in her bag, waiting to be fed to whoever wanted them, but she's leaning towards simply feeding them to pokémon rather than using them as bait. after all, she's not sure she and leo make enough money to raise so many.

they pass by a hill covered in flowers next. she thinks she catches movement out of the corner of her eye and decides to leave a couple of jelly beans behind. whatever pokémon hid under the roses, they'd have a tasty little treat to share with a friend.

they walk

together for a while. sometimes, the sylveon tugs on her ribbons demanding attention, demanding to play. other times, the slurpuff jumps around so much she releases a strong sweet flavor that attracts a pokémon or two.

such is the case with the lilligant. the pretty flower lady comes to dance with them and maybe to get a treat or two. it's all fun and games until she bows her flower head and leaves, dancing as elegantly as she came.

rhian turns

to the slurpuff and sylveon walking by her side. "what do you say, ladies? should we take the road up the hill, or walk around this lake?"

she gets conflicting answers: the sylveon wants to see the rest of the safari zone from the top of the hill, it seems, while the slurpuff would like to waddle in the water. rhian hums, pondering. the truth is she'd love to indulge both of her new friends, but she's pretty tired and pretty sure her time in the safari is almost up.

"how about this? since the lake is just around the corner, we'll spend some time there first," she proposes, "and after resting a bit, we'll see if we can squeeze in a quick visit to the hill." looking at the sylveon's seemingly disappointed expression, she adds, "if anything, i can always take you to a much bigger mountain next time. what do you say?"

it's how the small party finds themselves sitting by the water's edge. rhian sits with the sylveon's head resting on her lap, while the slurpuff pokes its hand inside the water, entertaining herself making ripples on the surface. a couple fish join them, attracted by the sudden movement, including a large pink fish. they all run away when the slurpuff comes threateningly close to kiss them (or eat them; debatable matter).

there's a cave

at the base of the hill that looks pretty inviting. rhian pokes her head in and so does her newly befriended sylveon. almost simultaneously, both recoil back the way they came at what they find inside.

it's not a bad sight, per se. the cave appears to be the home of a swoobat. the only thing odd about it is that it's rampaging around the cave, trying to stamp as many hearts as it possibly could on the walls. no doubt it would go for them as soon as it saw them.

"let's get going, yeah?" she proposes. the sylveon has no complaints.

the slurpuff? well, that's a good question. rhian seems to have lost her somewhere along the way.

[break][break]

"slurpuff?" she calls in a whisper, careful not to attract the attention of the swoobat. "where are you, girl?" she... couldn't have gone inside the cave while she and the sylveon exited it, right? oh dear.

rhian has a better idea to guide the slurpuff back to them. out of all the sweets she'd brought today, there is one in particular that is wrapped up in a thick layer of plastic. its odor is pretty strong, so rhian really only brought it on a just-in-case basis. that just-in-case happened to be now.

the durian mochi is unwrapped. she waits.
