never underestimate your enemy; he never has and never will, not even at the sight of a tiny whimsicott. even though the two are of the same typing, alexander is more than familiar with whimsicotts to be aware of the danger they bring. his suspicions are confirmed when he feels a TAILWIND picking up in front of them, favoring the enemy.

"be careful, chesnaught."

and what follows is exactly what alexander fears. a powerful HURRICANE bursts forth from the whimsicott, but they are prepared for it. chesnaught slams his fist against his chest in an act of aggression before bringing an arm forward to slam into the ground. out from the earth shoots up a sharp SPIKY SHIELD thst tanks the brunt of the damage. it buckles under the immense pressure; chesnaught has to dig his feet into the ground to support himself, but he holds.

both of them know chesnaught will not be able to survive a hit from the HURRICANE, and with the move's low accuracy, it makes this next attack more viable. crunching himself up into a tight ball, chesnaught shoots forth from behind the SPIKY SHIELD and ROLLOUTS. his weight adds to his speed as he charges straight at the whimsicott.

"rise."

there was an advantage to be had from being able to take flight on a whim. the fairy deftly avoided the rollout, his superior speed enough for the attack to harmlessly brush past. the strategy she had in mind was comparable to that of FERNANDO SILPH 's; the man's powerful charizard capable of avoiding her earth and water-bound lombre due to its flight capabilities.

"i'd recommend trying something else, mister stone," she quipped.

whimsicott was roughly six meters off the ground by now, the pokemon sharing the satisfied little smirk that his mistress presently wore.

"whim-siiii."

a moonblast came into fruition between the pokemon's stubby forearms, the casting time brief before it was promptly hurled toward the tightly furled chesnaught.

cocky. and slightly annoying but this is another obstacle for them to overcome. whimsicott manages to avoid the ROLLOUT by simply rising into the air, hovering six meters off the ground clear of the rolling chesnaught.

retaliation comes in the form of a MOONBLAST, and while damaging, the attack isn't nearly as effective as the HURRICANE would have been. for a moment alexander is stuck thinking on why miss alfric didn't choose to use the same attack; perhaps fearing that it would miss? he may never know.

regardless, the fairy-type attack hits with ferocity that will soon be rivaled. chesnaught's momentum is not halted; his ball of a body continues to roll despite him clinging on to his consciousness. he's practically close to fainting at this point but he knows he has one more attack left to give.

"do it."

whimsicott may think it's safe by being six meters up in the air but it only makes it a floating, static target. as chesnaught continues to roll, he soon lifts up ever so slightly before slamming into the ground, and from the impact, enough force is created for him to bounce himself up into the air to slam into the whimsicott for another ROLLOUT.

chesnaught will soon fall.

the chesnaught's ability to thrust himself from the earth made for an unpleasant surprise.

"whim - "

whimsicott barely managed to move just enough to be inflicted by a glancing blow as opposed to full one. he was sent toppling head over paw, but still managed to maintain his previous position within the air.

"you're alright, boy. keep it up."

after nodding in response to his mistress's gentle encouragement he'd raise his paws. another moonblast came into being, the raw power of it shimmering as it bulged with the fairy's power.

"whim-si!"

a toss followed the battle cry, the attack flying toward his foe with a good amount of force behind it.

the attack finally hits but it's not enough to knock the pesky grass-type down; it remains floating six meters up, which is an impressive feat for such a small creature. as time passes and the battle rages on, chesnaught's ROLLOUT grows stronger in every aspect, and what miss alfric fails to consider is that there is a slight charge time to whimsicott's attack.

so, when the final MOONBLAST is being called upon, chesnaught has enough time and momentum to simply drop back down to the ground and bounce back up for a final ROLLOUT before succumbing to the pain. his body unravels from the tight ball-shape he held for so long before falling back down towards the earth.

but from six meters up, chesnaught should feel so lucky that his trainer is always prepared. before his unconscious body could hit the ground, a red beam of light shoots straight at him and back he goes into the safe confines of his pokeball.

alexander smiles, knowing that his chesnaught gave him his all. aromatisse takes chesnaught's place and immediately sets up with a CALM MIND.

"nice work, miss alfric."

cait eyed her whimsicott, silently gauging his condition once the chesnaught had been felled. the fairy had endured the confrontation and sported wounds that she'd considered to be - at the most - superficial. despite their seemingly dainty appearance, the whimsicott line's defensive potential was considerable.

'at least we'll be on mostly equal footing for the round.'

at the moment she was disadvantaged. as a result of losing her first pokemon relatively early, she had effectively lost the lead in their battle. cait was aware that she'd need to conjure up a strategy that could perhaps bolster her back up to where she wanted to be.

'i'll figure something out.

"thank you, mister stone."

she offered him a pleased smile and curiously eyed the familiar fairy that was called forth.

'aromatisse.'

"giga drain - leech seed."

it was a combination of attacks specifically tailored to steal their foe's energy for the battle's duration. additionally, it'd add on to the fairy's longevity. several seeds soon burst from the whimsicott's prominent mane, a tangle of small vines emerging from each with the intent of clinging onto the plump fairy. a giga drain followed closely behind leech seed, green and glowing tendrils that originated from his horns shooting toward the aromatisse with the intention of devouring its strength.

the whimsicott proves to be a bigger problem than alexander had originally expected but no matter, it won't be conscious for much longer. even with its GIGA DRAIN and LEECH SEED, it had taken too much damage courtesy of chesnaught and will unlikely be able to outlast another hit or two.

"take the first."

verbal orders come from miss alfric which must mean she's deviating away from her usual battle routine. unfamiliarity will prove to be a disadvantage for her, especially when aromatisse is already boosted from her prior CALM MIND.

GIGA DRAIN does little to hurt her as the damage is lessened, which means the amount healed is also not substantial enough. aromatisse is quick enough on her feet to jump away from the annoying LEECH SEEDS, and as she lands a few feet away, she immediately points a single finger towards the whimsicott.

though not needed, aromatisse sets uo her next attacks carefully: PSYCHIC both holds the grass-type in place and hurts it while she conjures up a MOONBLAST that shines down right on top of the whimsicott. boosted by the earlier CALM MIND, there's little chance of outlasting the attacks.

her fairy's fall was far more abrupt than she had expected. the combination of attacks made for a brilliant one, the opposing fairy managing to whittle down her own companion to nothing more than a small heap of limp, softened flesh and wool.

"right."

cait sucked in a breath, her nostrils flaring lightly as she eyed her felled fairy. he wore a dazed expression, the look signifying that he'd be incapable of continuing onward with the fight.

"you tried your best, whimsicott."

she shook her head and produced the pokemon's capsule for the purpose of recalling him.

"two," she said.

'i'll need to do something else.'

cait thought for a moment, appearing to mull over her choices as she eyed the fairy.

with the fall of whimsicott, alexander takes the lead in the battle; though he has always had the lead. both he and aromatisse watch as her attacks do more than enough damage to send the whimsicott spiraling down from the sky, fainting it before it even hits the ground. the thud upon impact is lessened by the fluffy wool, but the potency remains the same.

"two."

as miss alfric takes a moment to mull over her next choice for the battle, it allows aromatisse a moment to glance back at her trainer, as if asking for permission, to which alexander responds with a subtle nod.

though no foe is present, aromatisse continues to boost herself up with another CALM MIND, preparing for their next opponent.

"everything okay, miss alfric?"

"i'm thinking, mister stone."

the pokemon's strength was bolstered thrice times over - and she needed to do something about it or stone's companion would have the potential to devastate the entirety of her team.

'i'll need to - '

an idea struck her at random and she'd allow herself a tiny smile.

'it's doable. it's definitely doable.'

"just thinking."

cait produced a luxury capsule before giving it a firm toss. a granbull emerged from its cushioned interior, the creature situated firmly upon all fours. despite her fierce appearance, she appeared curious as opposed to aggressive.

"roar."

the pokemon sucked in a breath before releasing the terrible noise. even cait winced in reaction, though her grin remained firmly in place.

as miss alfric continues to stall the battle to formulate her next plan of action, alexander does the same, anticipating what her next pokemon may be. her familiarity with grass-types has long been made evident and though the logical option would be to expect her next pokemon to be of the same type, alexander has a feeling it won't be.

and he's right.

a pink granbull takes the battlefield with an overpowering ROAR that sends aromatisse running. alexander is forced to recall the fairy-type, visibly disappointed but surprised at the new choice for her.

"consider me surprised, miss alfric. i was not expecting a granbull."

no matter; he will simply have to adapt. to take aromatisse's place is purugly, a fat yet adorable feline pokemon that causes the ground to tremble upon landing; not literally, she is not that fat!

"disable it, please."

purugly narrows her eyes and shoots the granbull a subtle look of HYPNOSIS, hoping to lull the fairy-type into a deep sleep. meanwhile, she prepares to attack with HONE CLAWS.

cait was familiar enough with the purugly line and their proficiency in battle. the young woman especially wary of their remarkable speed, having previously observed her own purugly close the distance between herself and a distant target within the span of a few seconds.

'that and there's - '

hypnosis was a remarkable useful move and one she rarely relied upon. it had a decent margin for failure, which meant there was a chance her granbull could remain standing for a while longer.

"go!"

it was a miracle in and of itself that the bulky fairy managed to successfully bypass the first round of hypnosis. the pokemon committing to a reckless charge as she sought to barrel into the cat, her teeth bared as she aimed to crunch down on the pokemon's frontal column of lightly-furred flesh that was her broad chest.

the first attempt to put the granbull to a nice, peaceful sleep fails but neither purugly nor alexander are surprised. the move, while effective, has a high marin for failure but that doesn't mean they won't try again; and they will.

"wait for it."

purugly nods, her fluffy tail slowly waving back and forth almost trance-like as she eyes the charging granbull. its recklessness will only come back and bite it. granbull opens its mouth but it will be in vain, as the purugly is quick on the draw with a FAKE OUT with her tail. she utilizes the close proximity to guarantee the hit and quickly follows it with a second attempt.

the waving of her tail was a warmup; the main effort comes now when she's right in front of the granbull. purugly stares into its eyes for another HYPNOSIS.

the second round of hypnosis proves far more successful than the last. the previous attack had failed to hit, fake out and hypnosis felling the bulky fairy before it had any chance of connecting. and while granbull hadn't fainted completely she still suffered from the effects of a forced sleep.

"return."

there was little point in keeping the pokemon out, especially if she'd be relentlessly battered until she was inevitably rendered completely and utterly unconscious and unusable. once again, little to no progress had been made in the gym leader's attempts to inflict any amount of damage. there was a glimmer of frustration in cait's eyes -

"that's three," she counted.

most battles are not won until the enemy is down and out; that is how alexander views it and that is how he views this particular one. so when miss alfric recalled her granbull after it had fallen victim to purugly's HYPNOSIS, it changes his perspective on the young gym leader; just slightly, but enough.

"i suppose so."

this victory is almost guaranteed but at what cost? he wonders. standing there in wait, purugly looks back to her trainer like the other two had done and asks for his permission with a subtle meow. feeling conflicted, alexander shakes his head.

purugly does not buff herself up.
