rhian is excited

to be visiting the mossdeep space center. the first time she was here, it was as part of a mission. this time, leo was invited to the facility in order to give the other scientists working there his opinion as a physicist on some complicated physics stuff. that had been as much as rhian managed to gather.

"i'm terribly sorry, mr. vermilion. that project has been temporarily put on hold. we'll make sure to call you back as soon as we can continue experiments, so please do stay in contact."

the scientist's words are dumped on them like a bucket of cold water. "but—but we already came all the way here! can't you make an exception?" disappointment is written all over her face.

a spark of recognition. the attention she garners thanks to her loud (perhaps a little too loud) complaint surprises the scientist. "aren't you the girl who came from the league the other day? we'd like you to help us securing the area."

rhian blinks. "again?"

[break][break]

"oh, this is perfect timing, really! how did you know we needed help? we didn't make the request yet! truly high quality service. i'll leave it in your capable hands." the man doesn't stay to listen. "mr. vermilion," he adds with a nod before rushing back inside.

she turns to leo with a face full of concern.

Has Science Gone Too Far with Rhian McArthur

It becomes apparent that his girlfriend is a lot more invested in this visit to the Space Center than he is. He offers to take her with him purely because of the baby-doll eyes he makes at her when he first got the call. If he didn't know better, Leonardo would have thought she learned the trick from her pokémon.

They arrive early in the morning and head straight for the Space Center. It's a cruel turn of events that not only prevents them from going past the reception but also forces Rhian outside the building.

Leo finds her comic book reactions funny in an adorable kind of way, actually. He pats her on the back as they make their way out.

"You heard the man. They'll call back as soon as things calm down, meaning the sooner you clear the perimeter the sooner we'll get to see the lab."

He smirks. Of course he's planning to help out, but that doesn't rule out any of the teasing possibilities laid out before him, thanks to the old scientist's hurry to return to his other tasks.

leo doesn't

understand. the only reason rhian's first time guarding this place was a success was almost exclusively because of her assigned partner, persephone amavi. true, her team may have grown alongside her as a trainer, slowly but surely, but this growth left her nowhere near confident enough in her abilities to fulfill the mission a second time. not at all.

before she can continue down that spiral of self-denigration, hope comes in the form of a pat and words of wisdom. a light at the end of the tunnel. he's right... she's nodding along while he talks. it would've all worked if not for the ending of leo's illuminated trolling.

her mouth hangs open, disbelief almost palpable in her voice. "aren't you gonna help me?" she frowns, clearly not expecting leo to simply step aside in a moment like this.

she scrambles for ways to get him on board. "it's the least you could do, you know, after making me come all the way here for nothing." nevermind that she'd asked for it herself — this is no fair. not to mention the scientist hadn't expressly appointed only her for the job. right?

It takes her longer than he first expected to react to his teasing. Long enough for Leo to have moved on from it, decided to drop the farce and already began taking out his team for the job.

He still offers a retort.

"If I remember correctly, it was you who begged to be allowed to accompany me."

A flick of his wrist sends his scizor out first. He hovers close to Leonardo, wings buzzing and eyes attentive, awaiting his Trainer's orders.

Seeing as the Space Center had a big body of water only meters away, he adds his milotic for additional help securing the maritime side. The milotic pokes her head out of the water with all the elegance that characterizes her.

"Come on, let's do this together."

[break][break]

He motions for his scizor to go up and scan the perimeter and down for his milotic to check for any areas underwater prone for breaches. Then, he waits to see which of her pokémon Rhian would be trusting for the task.

As soon as she's made her pick, he begins a first round around the building.

this situation

is giving rhian deja vu. she still remembers struggling with her choice of pokémon the first time she was here. requesting grandt's assistance again feels like a no-brainer, but the fact leo brings out two of his pokémon —the pretty milotic she'd recently gotten for him included— makes her falter. should she bring her own azumarill into the mix, as well?

she clicks the azumarill's pokéball open before she can have second thoughts about it, and turns on her heels, ready to start. "should we wait for them to come back?" she asks, referring to the pokémon he'd sent out to scan the area.

her answer arrives halfway through her question, as leo steps in the direction opposite from the shore. rhian rushes to catch up.

"this place hasn't changed," she comments idly. granted, it has barely been a month since her first time in mossdeep. the area surrounding the space center is vast and spacious, as well as incredibly quiet. it's not hard to hear the approaching wild pokémon even before leo's scizor returns to warn them.

it's only a mightyena, but a mightyena's bite is letal enough to give anyone nightmares.

Leonardo's words show confidence in his pokémon as well as in his hours of training with them. This isn't the first time either of them has had to inspect their surroundings for a mission, each in their respective zones. If anything, the only thing out of the ordinary would be working together.

No sooner said than done, his scizor is back and ready to fight.

"Perfect timing. Let's handle this mightyena before it becomes a threat."

[break][break]

Before Leonardo can issue any orders, the scizor points his arm at somewhere farther down the road. A dual front attack. Using his hands for gesturing, he orders his scizor to go on ahead.

"You go first. We'll finish up here and be right behind."

He turns to the Rhian, her two fairy type pokémon and the mightyena. Neither of them has made any moves yet, so he decides to guide the altercation a little while taking out another of his own pokémon.

"Any combination of fairy moves will do. Let's hurry."

[break][break]

When they were done, Rhian would find Leonardo's scolipede waiting to give them a ride.

it's suddenly

as if leo expects her to deal with the mightyena entirely on her own, which, if she turns her head to see what he's doing, seems to be a highly accurate impression. he's not even looking at the dog!

"okay," she starts, partly to her team but mostly just to calm herself down. leo is right: the mightyena is a dark-type pokémon, weak to fairy-type moves. and guess what? both of hers were fairy types and have fairy moves. she has the advantage here.

the mightyena growls, heightening rhian's sense of urgency. she doesn't want to hurt it, but she can't risk it hurting her pokémon or even leo either. "okay, let's use
play rough
!" she exclaims, before quickly changing her mind, "but don't play too roughly. if possible."

[break][break]

despite his trainer's confusing orders, the azumarill tackles the mightyena and catches it in a playful (but deadly?) grip. rhian's klefki approaches the scene and takes advantage of the azumarill's hold on the mightyena to give it a taste of his

draining kiss

. the mightyena struggles but finally it's put to sleep, and with that rhian can breathe again.

they're already riding on top of leo's scolipede when she asks, "why are we in such a hurry again?"

The sentence in itself is simple enough to understand. Leonardo doesn't doubt she'd be able to infer all the other implications on her own though either way she wouldn't need to. They are almost upon their destination.

Between his scizor and milotic stand a swampert and a feraligatr. No trainer in sight, but the events unfolding are too convenient for him to pass them off as mere coincidence.

[break][break]

Could there be a third front they were missing? Quite possible, but the two pokémon in front of them are strong enough a force that he can't risk splitting again. Leonardo curses under his breath.

[break][break]

"Rhian, help us set up. Scizor, up!"

[break][break]

His trainer's order is clear. The scizor was in the middle of aiming an attack at the water duo. The plan changes slightly with his new orders.

[break][break]

The skin of the swampert looks softer and easier to cut through than the feraligatr's. Scizor aims at its head with a Bullet Punch that it won't see coming first.

[break][break]

His other arm raises as if to deal a second punch on the swampert's stomach, but he quickly jumps in the air and slashes at the same spot his earlier move had hit, this time with a False Swipe.

The scizor's next Bullet Punch is directed at the air and with that, he's gone.

Leonardo turns to Rhian again.

looks more like it's on its way out than trying to break in, but this isn't a thought rhian can afford to entertain for long given that they're in the face of an impending fight.

leo asks her to set up the team. that's something she can do, yes. "let's start with

fairy lock
up, grandt," she calls out to her klefki. her azumarill is recalled with a whispered "thank you, boy, you did great," and in his stead comes rhian's blissey.

"you know what to do, cher."

the blissey begins to cast

light screen

on the entire team as soon as leo's scizor is gone. while rhian's klefki summons

spikes

around the field and chains everyone inside with a bright pink

fairy lock

, a thin layer would cover leo's pokémon as well as her own.

on each consecutive turn, the klefki would renew his

fairy lock

, while the blissey looked out for chances to use her

Roto Loto, as Rhian chose to call her rotom, is made of electricity. Swampert may be immune due to its dual typing, but the feraligatr is not.

"Keep that one entertained, please. Shouldn't be too hard with electric moves and maybe Confuse Ray."

Lacking the obvious and easy advantage of a grass type, the rotom would be a good enough alternative to deal with the feraligatr while Leonardo focuses his efforts on subjugating the trickier swampert.

Milotic can't do much from where she floats in the water. A Disarming Voice aimed at their two opponents comprises the extent of what she can do at the moment.

Thanks to Rhian's pokémon's continuous efforts, any damage taken by his team was promptly patched up. This allows him to take more risks, to sacrifice more when getting some hits in.

"Step back, Rhian. And wait for my signal. Scolipede, guide its attacks!"

The task is made easier thanks to the bug's speed. A succession of Steamroller attacks follows the water pokémon.

Sometimes they hit and sometimes it looks like a miss, but what the Scolipede really is doing is dampening the ground surrounding the pokémon. A Hydro Pump here and a Muddy Water there, and their side of the field looks like a swamp.

"Good job. Climb up now, girl!"

Once the scolipede got out of the water, an electric attack from the rotom might just leave the feraligatr incapacitated.

attack serves as signal for roto loto to step in. while the water pokémon are still recovering from her

disarming voice

, the rotom launches a timely

confuse ray

at the feraligatr.

it takes a moment to verify whether the attack worked or not, during which rhian has her fingers uselessly crossed. the rotom gives the feraligatr a moment before using

astonish

on it. if the confusion didn't work, then it would at least flinch while the rotom

charged

its next attack.

stepping back is a sort of impossible task with the

spikes

surrounding the field, but when the leo's plan starts to take form with the swampert's moves, rhian thinks she understands his intent—he's not asking her to step back from the entire battle; just from that side of the field.

a poke at her blissey and klefki has them repositioning themselves a bit closer to the walls the klefki has created around them. and, when leo orders his scolipede to

rock climb

said wall, rhian is ready. "roto loto, your turn!"

the rotom fires off an electrically hazardous

at the pools of water, which catches both the confused feraligatr and swampert. though the latter is immune to this attack, she can see the feraligatr's body tremble before falling to the ground.

Perfect. All is going according to plan. If they finish the swampert off quickly, they'll be able to catch up to his scizor and hopefully catch the last of this surprise attack to the Space Center.

There are two possibles resolutions for this fight. Scolipede's attacks aren't particularly effective against the swampert and viceversa. This would either result in a battle of stealth, or...

"Scolipede, we're using THAT!"

[break][break]

Scolipede is used to visual signs when following orders. She has no psychic powers or anything that could make her understand the human language. A nod of the head, a flick of the hand. That's what scolipede likes relying on.

[break][break]

She's been trained to understand certain words though. A THAT is the ace under their sleeves.

[break][break]

The swampert has given up trying to climb up after her and is in the middle of testing some water tricks, trying to adjust its aim. Scolipede takes advantage of this.

[break][break]

She waits for a Hydro Pump to get close enough to where she is first. She quickly climbs up two spikes higher with Rock Climb and releases a spit of Toxic right in it, so that when it falls back down it poisons the unassuming swampert.

[break][break]

Once her opponent is successfully poisoned, she opens her mouth and a cloud of poisonous Venom Drench is released, shortly followed by purple blobs of Venoshock, both aimed directly at the pokémon below her.

She looks at her trainer for further guidance and that's when she sees the hand placed on his forehead, closed except for the two fingers on each side.

"We're done here. Let's get going, we need to catch up to scizor."

[break][break]

He's speaking to Rhian now. Leonardo would rather her not see the end of this battle, so he gives her a twirl so that she's facing the wall of Spikes in the direction his scizor went off. He waits for her pokémon to lower the tight lock they had helpfully put up around them so they can go.

Meanwhile, scolipede is finishing things off. She rolls down the steep wall to gain speed and stab the swampert with her Megahorn.

rhian's happy

to follow leo's lead. she's a little worried about the fallen pokémon, both water pokémon as well as the mightyena from earlier, but she figures if leo's hurrying so much it must be for something. she also supposes that the faster they stop the people trying to break in, the sooner they can notify the scientists inside the space center about them.

grandt's

fairy lock

is the first to poof. because it needed to be reapplied on every turn, just stopping makes the magical chains loosen and the locks disappear.

spikes

are a little harder. her klefki can't really control them at will and rhian's tempted to just ask leo to get his scolipede to help them up, but after such a hard fight she has to wonder if that would be alright after all.

she turns to her blissey. "cher, do you still have some of those
egg bombs
on you?" a nod is all rhian needs to confirm it, and before long she's trying to push everyone a few steps back so that the explosion doesn't hurt either of them.

in hindsight, rhian should have realized the boom would scare the scientists residing inside, but at the moment she just wants to get things over with as soon as possible.

Rhian doesn't seem to notice that he's purposefully turning her away from the bloodshed, which is good. The milotic is still in the lake, inspecting the waters as much as watching over them.

Leonardo points at the sky and she understands. She spins in the water, a Rain Dance to summon a light shower. It would wash away both mud and blood from his scolipede.

He calls both pokémon back into their pokéballs just before they begin their run.

Scizor is not too far away. They would find him stalling a man wearing a lab coat and a pair of glasses that hides his eyes. Very suspicious man. Next to him, a pokémon has its arms firmly positioned on the building's walls.

It's just a Mr. Mime. No stronger or deadlier than any of the pokémon they'd faced until then, but perhaps trickier because it would be receiving orders directly from its trainer.
