the question forces the giant to pause, considering. it wasn't something he pondered about, at least if he could help it, but couldn't deny the fact that it did sneak it's way in occasionally.

in that vein, they are alike. no matter the result, regret means the individual did not make the best decision at that point in time. which, is never the case for him. that’s how he copes when things go awry. that’s how he holds his head up high despite it all.

his question earns only silence at first. the gears of his mind work, slow and dulled from the medication and the pain. was this question for gabirel's sake, or fernando's?

gabriel’s assumption isn’t far off. the intention is missed entirely but the end result is to gauge where he stands. what fernando needs is less of a martyr and more of a colleague who will live to see another work day. that and cutting off another game piece from finding a place on his chess board.
