vs Beau Fontaine

It was his first time in Dewford. First thing he noticed was that it was a nicer place than Sootopolis. But then, it wasn't difficult to clear a bar set quite that low.

Standing at the sandy beaches alongside his partner in Crime-fighting, Raki the Riolu, the blonde stretched his muscles and limbs in preparation for the intense aerobic exercises that were surely about to follow.

The obstacle course stretching before him was certainly something else. As his legs split underneath him, the man keenly observed what awaited him, forming a plan of attack.

Besides him, Raki yawned, staring at the waves crashing on the shores.

With one final, good stretch, the blonde sprang back up to his feet before turning on his heel, smiling at the gym Leader.

"Ready when you are, Mr. Fontaine."

Beau grins, waving a hand self-deprecatingly. "I told you, it's just Beau! Mr. Fontaine is only around on Saturday nights," he snickers, earning himself a sharp elbow from the Pangoro standing next to him.

Rubbing his ribs and concealing his wince with a bright smile, the Gym Leader gestures to a low ramp leading from the beach to just atop the shallows of the cerulean water lapping at the shore. "I know they say if you're asked to walk on water, it's too much...but guess what?" he enthuses.

It appears that the first obstacle of the course entails just that - a number of long pontoons has been carefully roped into the shape of a makeshift path leading to a small platform further out into the water. The pontoons bob lazily in the surf, held mostly in place by sections of heavy rope, but still obviously subject to the whims of the water.

"Keep your balance," Beau advises, tapping the side of his nose knowingly.

Challenging an Obstacle:

Challenging an obstacle requires a minimum of two posts per obstacle. After your first, Beau Fontaine will react accordingly if necessary before you post further, completing the obstacle.

As you are undertaking the challenge with Raki the Riolu, he will accompany you every step of the way and complete the obstacles alongside you!

You begin the Gym Challenge with five stamina points, representing the physical toll the course takes on you and your pokémon. There are three obstacles in total.

When you make your final post of undertaking the obstacle, you must roll. 1-50 represents a low exertion, causing you to lose only 1 stamina point. 51-100 represents a high exertion, causing you to lose 2 stamina points.

If you reach 0 stamina, you fall from the obstacle course.

Obstacle: Water Walking!

[break][break]
This obstacle features a dozen lightweight pontoons stretched outward in a path, floating just on top of the water. Your objective is to cross the water using the pontoons to reach the next platform.

However, tread carefully! Though the pontoons are secured to float in place using rope, they're still rather wobbly, and a wrong-footed step will send you rolling into the water! Can you make it across these bombastically bobbing baffles without blowing bubbles in the briny?

He laughed, nodding.

"Then I shall, Beau." He said, his eyes following the gym leader's gesture as he adjusted his hat, his body turning towards the first obstacle.

Long rows of boats stretched out in a path towards a platform in the far distance. At the sight, Gwyar hummed, brows furrowing slightly in thought.

There was little terrain he wasn't willing to traverse on land- but by comparison, he hadn't had a great deal of experience on boats. That is to say, he wasn't sure if his sea legs could be trusted with the task.

But! Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

"Ha! I shall try." The knight said, barking out a laugh at the 'advice' as he stepped forth, gesturing with his neck. "Let us go, Raki!"

A yip followed as the puppy walked forth, slipping past him with a wide grin, running ahead. A natural born martial artist, and a tremendously light one at that, perhaps it was no shock when it quickly began to leap from boat to boat, its piddly weight barely disturbing the sea vessels.

"Hoh, if only it were that easy for me." The 250-pound man said with a snort, rolling his shoulders and back muscles experimentally before crouching low, fingers touching the sand.

A moment later, he sprinted after his puppy companion, leaping atop the first boat. His foot had scarcely touched it before it launched him forth yet again, the large vessel visibly tilting back and forth as the man sailed to the next. Then again, and again.

If there was one thing Gwyar was confident in, it was physical aptitude.

Beau grins as the man and his Riolu take off across the pontoons, unable to keep from chuckling as the agile Riolu darts from buoy to buoy. The other man - while indeed larger than his companion - appears to have precious little trouble himself with the obstacle, and the floats don't seem to budge far from their mooring as they sink and rise under the feet of trainer and pokémon alike.

The Gym Leader glances up at the sky almost idly, hands in his pockets as he meanders along the shoreline to his vantage point for the next obstacle - it certainly didn't seem like Gwyar was going to have any trouble in the slightest with the first hurdle, but that isn't entirely surprising. It's not like he -wants- his challengers to fail, after all!

From one boat to the next, Gwyar and Raki continued to advance- and eventually, to race one another as the bulky man nearly caught up with the puppy, his boisterous laughter reaching the puppy's ears.

It wasn't long before both of them had reached the end of the first course, with the blonde man holding both arms whilst flexing as he loudly laughed. Besides him, the puppy kicked the sand irritably. Somehow, the man had managed to win the race...

"You're still ten years too early to challenge me, brat!" The man boomed at Raki with a broad grin, getting a raspberry in response.

Beau can't help but chuckle to himself at the banter between the challenger and his Riolu. It's easy to stay in a good mood with some good-natured competitive sportsmanship happening! Gwyar, of course, makes it to the sandy islet in the middle of the bay shallows with perilously little trouble, bringing him squarely before the next obstacle - a steep wall that starts with an easy curve at the base, straightening to an almost vertical ascent near the top with almost no incline to speak of. The entire assemblage has a polished sheen, and it is apparent that there are no handholds or rough wooden planks to provide purchase underfoot.

At the top of the wall, the bulbous blue head of a Dewpider peeks over. The insectoid pokemon jumps comically in alarm with a squeak, immediately and frantically skittering back and forth across the top of the wall, bouncing about and drenching its surroundings in a constant WATER SPORT that sends a thin layer of crystal-clear water shimmering down the wall, ensuring that climbing to the top - the evident goal - will be a damp undertaking!

This obstacle features a sharply-inclined wall that must be climbed to progress. Making the process more difficult is Beau's Dewpider, who patrols the top of the wall with a ceaseless Water Sport that makes progressing up the wall a slick proposition indeed!

Gwyar and Raki stared blankly at the wet wall.

"Uh oh." Gwyar intoned with a quirk of his lips, crossing his arms over his chest as sweat rolled down his cheek. "Simple but difficult, eh? Hn... How do we...?"

Raki sprinted past him a moment later, yipping victoriously as he began running up the curved ramp.

HAHAHA, HE WAS GONNA WIN!

"... Oh, bollocks." Gwyar said with a chuckle, ruffling his own hair as he stretched his neck from side to side, watching the puppy slide down with a confused yip a moment later. "But I suppose that's the right attitude to have."

After all, it was a challenge against physical prowess and willpower. Trying to be clever about it was missing the entire point.

"Let's GO!" Roared the man as he broke for the ramp as well, sprinting past the sliding puppy, who immediately began scrambling for some nonexistent purchase with a whine.

Beau grins as he watches the feisty Riolu try to best the wall first, only to come sliding back down. That's definitely the sort of spirit he appreciates, though, and it seems it's just as infectious for Gwyar as he takes a run at the wall next. It's a challenge, and the strain is evident in trying to progress up the wall, but although the sheer force of effort will doubtless take its toll on his challenger, Beau knows he's going to make it past this obstacle just as he did the first.

The Dewpider spies Gwyar's ascent and jumps comically upward in alarm, a fresh wash of crystal-clear water cresting down the wall in a heavy sheet as though to slow his progress. The aquatic bug scrambles frantically back and forth along the top of the wall but seems unable to keep the water flowing across its entire surface in its panic, creating a number of dry spots as it moves back and forth erratically.

It is not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination, which he supposes is the point. Though it might be impossible for the little spider to cover every little inch of the wall, it does a good enough job of running about and spilling everywhere that it is almost impossible for Gwyar to not get himself wet in one way or another.

Not for Raki though, who was using the man as a meat shield by climbing directly beneath him. He had the gall to laugh, too! Little brat!

"Left!" Boomed the man all the same as he began shuffling towards the tiny dry spot left on his left side, Raki quick to follow his lead. They moved briefly as the little spider atop ran about, before- "Right!"

Yet again they moved in tandem, the distance between them and the spider slowly closing until he could practically look the little guy in the eye.

"Hey there! Let me win, pretty please?" He called out politely as he reached for the edge, almost done-!

Whether startled by the other man's proximity or charmed by the polite request, the Dewpider offers a high-pitched squeak before jumping back in alarm, toppling down the back of the wall to land in the water below with a splash. That's one way to make it, Beau reasons, as he watches Gwyar and Raki clamber to the top of the wall with little trouble.

"Great moves, my dude! Just one more stretch and you're home free!" he calls from his position on a platform in the center of the arena, pointing with a broad grin at the pedestal next to him holding a pristine Grit Badge for the taking. Beau's platform is higher than Gwyar's, however, and the obstacle bridging the gap between the two is a series of overhead bars that angle upward, clearly intending for the prospective challenger to swing from one to the next without losing his grip and dropping into the water below.

This obstacle features a relatively simple challenge, in theory: a series of overhead bars stretches from one platform to the final destination, angled upward so that swinging from one to the next is liable to get more difficult as one proceeds along the course. Swing your way to victory, or lose your grip and face the damp grip of, uh, dampness!
