Gerald was born into a miserable home in Fortree City. His biological father left soon after his birth after having accrued debt with the wrong people. Left alone, his mother struggled to make ends meet, a struggle only made worse when she met what would become his first step-father, that man was a good-for-nothing drunkard, but at least he was a nice drunk. Unfortunately, he passed on the habit to Gerald’s mother and she was the exact opposite when under the influence.

That relationship didn’t last. But her habit stayed, she grew violent whenever money grew tight. Her anger targeted Gerald not only verbally, but also physically. Soon the anger didn’t only appear when she was drunk. She became spiteful even sober, and she was never the one to be blamed. Oh no, Gerald was always blamed for all of her shortcomings.

Of course, she was in and out of jobs all the time, drinking what little money they had, away. Many a time did he have to feed himself. Even at a young age, he found ways of earning his keep without letting his mother know because she would never care where he was unless she needed a punching bag because the mirror always hit back. In school, he was bullied. No matter how many times he beat his bullies, they would always find renewed strength to continue bullying him.

He grew older, and at the age of twelve, his mother found another semi-permanent man to be with. He seemed kind, friendly, and a good person. They stayed together and a year later they had a child. A beautiful little girl. Everything was nice and dandy for the first six years of her life. It was a precious time of respite for Gerald, enough time for him to finish school with relatively good marks. Of course, the relationship wasn’t perfect, they had their fights as all families had. At times even he had to step in as the “third” adult in the house and care for his little sister.

But it didn’t matter to him, he was used to that. It was a time of normalcy for him, and unfortunately for him, it was enough time for him to start hoping that life would turn good. He grew close to his sister, he even helped her get acquainted with Pokémon even if she was far too young for that.

But life has a habit of throwing curveballs. One day after he came home from his part-time job, he found the house in shambles, his mother was beaten and bruised crying her eyes out in the kitchen. His “Step-father” was nowhere to be seen or heard until he reached his little sister’s room.

What happened afterward even he couldn’t tell you. Anger overtook him and once he came to his senses he was on his way out of the house his clothes having been stained red. With his Little sister in his arms and nothing else, he vowed to find a better life for her no matter what it took or how far away from there they had to travel.
