A pair of sunglasses shading his eyes from the sun overhead, Klaus mills up the beach at a leisurely pace - at his side hovers a Dhelmise, the occasional whistle vocalizing from the pokemon as its ghostly tendrils of kelp brush along the sand. Passing from the outskirts to the beach proper, more and more people fill the sand and surf, the gathering itself having attracted flocks of Wingulls and Pelippers looking for an easy meal.

Lips pursing, Klaus briefly flips up his sunglasses to take stock of the Wingulls soaring just beyond, his brow furrowing at his last memory of his entanglement with the birds above. He pulls a pokeball from the depths of his shorts' pocket and releases a Lapras into the shallows.

"Feel like playing sniper," he asks Lapras, the pokemon nodding enthusiastically as he spies the Wingulls. Giving a nod of his own, Klaus makes an absent little motion with his hand towards the Wingulls to direct, "Ice Beam, then." Bolt of ice after bolt of ice peppers the air, sending the bulk of the birds scattering, though one particularly unlucky one is struck, causing it to dead-weight in the air and fall straight down...

Incineroar gives Xiura a dubious growl as they laboriously trek over tall, sun-warmed sand dunes.

"I'm telling you, Incineroar, I think a special boba tea themed after you will be a hit!" Xiura clasps her hands together in fervid determination.

Incineroar shrugs heavily in response.

"Squawk, squawk!"

An unconscious Wingull lands squarely in one of Incineroar's upraised paws.

Both parties look curiously upon the unfortunate creature for a few moments.

"Oh." A pregnant pause. "Good job, Incineroar?"

"Roarr?"

The Wingull is clearly coated in a layer of frost.

They come upon the crested slope of one of the dunes, where below, Xiura spots a young man and Lapras a close distance away.

"Oh, this makes much more sense now. Hello, there!" she calls out. "Are you subduing the Wingulls here too?"

Slowing down as he catches sight of the falling Wingull, Klaus subtly winces at the sound its body makes impacting the sand. Brow furrowed with minute worry that some hapless beach-goer has taken an unconscious pokemon to the head, he looks relieved when the crowd parts enough to reveal Xiura simply standing there with a curious look upon her face.

Blinking once, he lifts his hand and waves hesitantly as he offers an embarrassed, "Uh. Yeah - I guess so. They're a menace when left too long." Glancing from Xiura to the Wingull, he hazards carefully, "That didn't hit you, right?"

Meanwhile, Anwhistle continues to snipe contentedly at the squawking flocks above, thinning them though not wholly.

Xiura laughs, bright and clear. "Oh no, not at all." Gesturing at her companion, Xiura adds, "It was simply an impromptu game of catch for Incineroar."

"We came to discourage the Wingulls from their overzealous ways, too. Would you like to team up? I've got refreshments for the road." Xiura pulls out a little bundle of checkered cloth from her side satchel, tugging at the plump knot to reveal an array of fruit-and-cream sandwiches.

Suddenly, a Wingull dives down with an ear-piercing screech. Incineroar reflexively braces an arm over Xiura, who ducks down, startled. Incineroar snatches the Wingull by the neck mid-swoop, whirling around lightning-fast and chucking the bird back into the air at blinding speed.

"Thanks, Incineroar," Xiura says with an embarrassed laugh. Deep in the distance, the unconscious Wingull plops into the seawater, floating atop the rolling waves.

"I'm Xiura, by the way!"

An awkward laugh spills from Klaus's lips as Xiura speaks. Not answering immediately, his head tilts with curiosity as Xiura retrieves a bundle from her satchel, a soft "Ah," sounding from him before he's interrupted by a swooping Wingull. Thankfully, her own pokemon, an Incineroar, takes care of the bold bird with great efficiency.

A blush rising unbidden to his cheeks, Klaus hesitates for a moment before he extends his hand hesitantly as he answers, "Klaus." He tips his head in the direction of the nearby Lapras, adding, "And this is Anwhistle. It's nice to meet you."

That spoken, he glances about a moment before his gaze settles onto one of the nearby unused beach umbrellas stuck in the sand. Motioning towards a nearby umbrella, Klaus suggests, "You can probably get some peace and quiet to eat your lunch under that?" Looking upwards, the beady eyes of the Wingulls observing the pair with utmost calculation, Klaus offers, "Anwhistle can help keep them away from you if you'd like."

As if to emphasis the point, a bolt of ice flies through the air, disturbing the gathering birds; a pleased hum sounds from the Lapras for his efforts.

"It's nice to meet you, Klaus, Anwhistle."

Glancing briefly upward at the scattering seabirds, Xiura says with a smile, "I wouldn't want to impose on Anwhistle like that. Let us help you! After all, we came for a job, too."

Pausing to assess the skies overhead, Xiura wrinkles her nose at the Wingulls simply waiting for unsuspecting passersby to pull out more food. "I think they might be a little high up for you, Incineroar." Incineroar growls, crossing his arms, but Xiura still takes a Pokeball from her waist belt and tosses it high in the air.

"Hatterene, go! Use Confusion!"

Hatterene hums its acknowledgment in a sparkling chime of noise. Turning to the birds wheeling overhead, she aims a blast of blue energy at them. The impact startles and confounds the Wingulls, who start squawking in dismay, colliding into their neighbors and dropping from the sky.

"Great job, Hatterene!" Xiura says, motioning for her Pokemon to join the Lapras' side.

"A job," Klaus repeats, his brow momentarily furrowing before he recalls the lifeguards of the beach often placed out ads calling for help with wrangling the enthusiastic Wingulls. Flashing a half-smile he jabs his thumb back towards the lighthouse in the distance as he explains, "I just show up to help sometimes. I'm one of the lighthouse keepers."

He then looks to his Lapras, his head tipping towards the expanse of beach before them to direct, "Alright, go on then. You know what to do." A sharp trill answers in response, and Anwhistle nods in affirmation before gliding slowly through the shallows, pausing routinely to take pot-shots at the Wingulls above.

Shoving his hands in his pockets as he begins to follow after his Lapras, he asks Xiura conversationally, "You local?"

With admiration, Xiura says to Klaus, "Lighthouse keeper! That sounds like an important job, with the ships navigating along the shore and all." She looks along the beach landscape, breathing in deeply to savor the salty sea air.

"I recently moved here from Johto to establish a boba tea café, so now I'm local." Xiura pauses to shake a pebble out of her sandal before continuing on. "You should come by sometime. My mother has a traditional tea house back home, so you'll see a few things reminiscent of that sort of place." Xiura smiles a little with the memory, recalling the familiar, earthy scent of green tea in the air. She remembers the timeless wooden screens with translucent paper enclosing each private booth, the distinctive furnishing mirrored in her own café.

As the Lapras continues to strike at the birds sailing overhead, Hatterene glides along the edge of the ebbing waves, levitating over the ground. Occasionally the Pokémon lands, creating an imprint in the wet sand as she releases a blast of psychic energy at the offending Wingulls.

"Is your job a lot of hard work, or is it usually peaceful?"

His head tilting faintly to the side as he listens to Xiura, Klaus's lips quirk into a half a smile he offers, "I love boba. I'll stop by sometime on one of my days off, yeah."

Klaus then gives a little shrug, his hand lifting to scratch at the back of his neck as he speaks. "I guess so," he admits. "Usually it's quiet but we get the occasional storm or someone's radio goes awol and it gets exciting. Most of my time is spent doing maintenance - keeping up the electronics and painting and that sort of thing." His lips pursed for a moment, he confides, "We get elementary schools coming out for field trips this time of year. That's always fun. The kids love it."

The man's gaze impassively follows his Lapras's attacks as well as the Hatterene's, a self-contained chaos away from the bustle of bodies down the beach.

A sudden yawn rips from his throat, his hand lifting to hide his mouth. Blinking blearily, a faint blush dusting his cheeks at the unexpected action, Klaus admits after a moment, "I should probably go back and catch a nap before my shift."
